Tim Scott: If the White House ignores the debt ceiling, it’s impeachment time

posted at 4:55 pm on July 7, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via RCP, which has a brief transcript in case the audio’s not clear. There’s actually little risk of The One doing this, I think. The White House has consistently downplayed the possibility, and like I said once before, the legal uncertainty of the move means it probably wouldn’t do much to stop markets from panicking anyway. Besides, even liberals as stalwart as Barney Frank recognize that it would be a catastrophically ambitious power play:

“I think it would cause a great crisis in our democracy” if debt was created without a rise in the debt limit, Frank told economist Bruce Bartlett, a former Republican who has been talking up the “constitutional option.” Frank simply didn’t see a way for this to work, and warned of political disaster.

“The anger in the country, the political bitterness and the vitroil, would be amplified,” he said, “and you’d let people off the hook for their irresponsibility.”

Indeed, and yet I haven’t seen liberal legal experts so excited about an idea since the last round of the “Commerce Clause lets us do anything we want” debate. You know, I’ve been blogging long enough to remember a time when the left was all about using legislative power to check an executive who fancied himself endowed with monarchical constitutional powers. Which is to say, I’ve been blogging for more than two and a half years. Ah well. The One did promise us Change.

Speaking of which, since when did Lindsey “Congress should just sort of shut up” Graham suddenly become a big Article I guy?

If the Captain of a ship can be removed for gross incompetence, why wasn’t this clown removed a year ago?

For wasting a trillion dollars on the stimulus, Obama should have been keelhauled.

When he realized that Obama doing this would actually strip him of his legislative authority. I know there are very many cynical people who dismiss this concept, but our republic would truly be destroyed if he were allowed to do this with impunity. Because of that and the fact that most congressmen, even Dems, don’t like having their authority or powers taken from them they would act. Because if they didn’t we are no longer a constitutional republic and our constitution is nothing but toilet paper at that point.

Would they go through with it, though?

It would never last in the Senate, of course. And actually carrying out a threat to impeach is something that the Hastert Congress knows is very dangerous.

The Clinton impeachment did not involve shredding Article I of the Constitution.

NotCoach on July 7, 2011 at 5:05 PM

Just to add my own 2 cents on whether or not he will do this, I don’t think he will. I don’t think he will go so far as to blot out Article I and Obama backed bonds just won’t sell.

I think the House would go through with it. Many Obama supporters would be PO’d, but a majority of Americans don’t want the debt ceiling raised. The GOP would have the public on their side on this. And when it inevitably dies in the Senate since the Dems hold the majority there, every Senator who defends Obama on this will be even more vulnerable heading into their next election.

As for whether or not Barry would do this, I think he would if push came to shove. His ideal scenario is for the GOP to cave at the last minute, but I honestly don’t think Boehner will do that. First of all, he probably won’t be able to find the votes. And secondly, he knows after the botched 2011 budget compromise that if he blows this, the Tea Party will be in full revolt.

Since he realized there was something in it for him. I doubt the shot to his authority had much to do with it. He probably enjoyed being in the Model UN for the same reason he enjoys being in the Senate.

Obama does this, Congress needs to pass something immediately that those bonds will not be paid back- ever. Even if he vetos it or the Senate kills that, just one House doing so would call the bonds in so much question, it would be hard to sell them.
Maybe Obama could make them good out of his own campaign funds! /sarc

It is something that Congress, and specifically Republicans in Congress, would not enter into lightly, that’s for sure.

But one thing separates the Clinton impeachment from this theoretical impeachment. Clinton stepped on the toes of the Judiciary. Obama is preparing to tread on Legislative authority. Funny things happen in legislators when an Executive does that. They get upset.

As well they should.

Yeah, I’m so scared of Biden as POTUS: he started his political career in a terrorist’s home, he sat in an anti-American church for 20 years, he was BFFs with Khalidi, he sought out only Marxist profs in college, he indulged in “Black Rage” as a youngster, he’s honest about his drug use; oh wait! That’s Obama’s record. Joe looks like Bambi next to that. I’d be thrilled for a POTUS Biden, esp. because can you imagine how easy it would be to vote him out in ’12?

Not gonna happen.

The Gunrunner story was first broken by C-BS “News” on February 23, 2011. Sharyll Atkinson was the lead reporter.

http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7357550n

But yesterday, after the news broke that ATF Head Kenneth Melson testified in secret to Issa’s Committee, C-BS apparently decided that this was getting too close to O’bama. It was never mentioned on their evening “newscast”, and I doubt it will be mentioned tonight.

C-BS got The Memo.

He should be impeached for violating the War Powers Act.

For gun running, and contributing to the murder of Officer Brian Terry, he should go to jail. And Eric Holder should be sitting in the next cell.

For these clowns to be walking free right now is a national travesty.

What did I tell you? This just in from the Tea Party/Grassroot groups:

If this President and Congress will not address the insanity of current government spending, WE WILL!!

Our message is simple: DO NOT RAISE THE DEBT CEILING!

This will be the defining moment in many establishment careers. We will not negotiate with any big government sellouts, whether it’s a Republican like Mitch McConnell or a Democrat like Ben Nelson when they come up for reelection we will defeat them!  Let us ame this clear we will defeat ANY Republican who sells out on the debt ceiling in their next Primary election!

We are being over run by a criminal class.

Is it not also impeachable if one is responsible for the murder of 2 American agents and possibly hundreds or thousands of Mexican victims.

2500 assault rifles (and if I know my lefty talking points) can kill hundreds of thousands.

Mexico should bring a complaint in the world court in the name of Mexicans murdered by a criminal regime with a leader (albeit from behind) who devised a plan to usurp his own citizens constitutional rights.

Impeachment first however. Even Nixon didn’t kill anyone with his stupidity.

C-BS “News” broke this story in February. But earlier this week, the ATF head went in for secret testimony without telling Stedman and O’bama, and implicated Higher-Ups.

Issa and the Committee wrote Holder a scathing letter, the contents of which were made public yesterday.

C-BS has since spiked the story they broke. It went totally unmentioned on last night’s national TV news, and likewise tonight they again failed to report it.

I am afraid Tim Scott is uttering the truth there. We’ve reached a tipping point at which reasonable people will start exercising their Jeffersonian rights to physical redress when the normal courses of action no longer work. The people who are still making things and paying for all this nonsense are starting to mumble more and more about revolution and John Galt.

I am very afraid this will happen. It’s not going to be fun. It’s not going to be glorious. It’s going to be terrible, frightening, and deadly. No civilized society wants or needs that, especially when they have a fifth column active in this country to change it utterly into a 7th century AD religion of corruption, death, fear, and terror.

We MUST find a better way. And we MUST be ready to swallow some harsh medicine. Otherwise the unthinkable will happen.
