Marchers protest Georgia immigration law

posted at 7:30 pm on July 2, 2011 by Tina Korbe

This Independence Day weekend, a different kind of parade made its way through the streets of Atlanta. Thousands of marchers stormed the Georgia state capitol to protest a recently passed immigration law that, among other things, makes it a felony to use false information or documentation when applying for a job.

Thousands of marchers stormed the Georgia Capitol on Saturday to protest the state’s new immigration law, which they say creates an unwelcome environment for people of color and those in search of a better life.

Men, women and children of all ages converged on downtown Atlanta for the march and rally, cheering speakers while shading themselves with umbrellas and posters. Capitol police and organizers estimated the crowd at between 8,000 and 14,000. They filled the blocks around the Capitol, holding signs decrying House Bill 87 and reading “Immigration Reform Now!” …

Adelina Nicholls, executive director of the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights, said the crowd was sending a message.

“They are ready to fight,” Nicholls said. “We need immigration reform, and no HB87 is going to stop us. We have earned the right to be here.”

Without doubt, the nation needs immigration reform — but Nicholls’ perspective comes across as incredibly short-sighted. She seems to imply all that’s required to “earn the right to be here” is … to be here. But part of what it means to live in the United States is to respect the rule of law.

Georgia’s new law doesn’t even really do anything new: It just reinforces the state’s ability to enforce federal law. And at the moment, the law does even less than that. A judge Monday blocked several of the law’s key provisions, including one to authorize police to check the immigration status of suspects without proper identification and another to penalize people who knowingly and willingly transport or harbor illegal immigrants while committing another crime.

Today’s march followed a different kind of demonstration yesterday. Opponents of the new Georgia law organized “a day without immigrants,” during which some businesses closed and some community members refused to work or shop to protest the law.

Our community organizer in chief knows that by not enforcing the existing laws, getting the illegals to protest en mass and using union thug intimidation tactics, they will strong arm the system and win and he won’t have to lift a finger and he won’t be blamed. He had to do it to keep the peace for the sake of social justice.

The states pass laws aginst illegal aliens, the courts over rule the states, the feds sue the states, the illegal aliens riot and go to the streets, the illegal aliens demand the same thing we American’s have and now we deal with them as we do the mob flash groups all over the country! Wow isn’t this special? Have y’all had your tv on as to what is happening over the pond? Coming soon here to America and it seems not a stinken thing we can do about it. This is when they should bring in the ICE vans and deport all of these criminals, but of course we know ICE doesn’t do an effing thing. These are future voters if granted amnesty and guess which way they’ll vote. And their legal anchor babies will vote for the freebie party. The GOP better do something about this now because we’ve become a Third World dumping ground. The GOP is no better than Dems on this. Dems want the votes and Rs want the cheap labor. Here is GA the Latino community thinks the law allows the police to pull people off the street and deport them. The agitators are certainly not challenging this idea. It’s a joke. I couldn’t disagree more. We don’t need reform at all. What we need are the borders secured and all existing immigration laws followed, by both the immigrants and the government entities and officials who are charged with enforcing same. Period.

If they have actually earned the right to be here, then they are not undocumented.

If you ain’t got the papers, sugar, you have NOT earned the right to be here. You might have contributed to your community, blah blah, but you did it all ILLEGALLY.

If the law means nothing, then our society and our nation are at peril. Laws aren’t something to abide when it’s convenient. Either you believe in the rule of law or you don’t.

If you disagree with a law, you work WITHIN THE SYSTEM to change it. You don’t break it, and then say: Look what a good Joe (Jose) I am. I work (take jobs from unemployed citizens) and contribute to the economy (send money back across the non-existent border).

I feel for the plight of Mexican people without ways and means, but not to the extent that I feel for American citizens without ways and means, especially in Ojugears’ so-called “recovery” that looks more like the recession that wouldn’t die.

In other words, they overplayed their hand and the American people will have the last laugh. Right now, the American people are silently fighting back going thru legal means. But if the leftist courts, the government and their supporters kept ignoring the law, the end result will literally mean ousting illegal immigrants by every means necessary and if the Aztlan people think that they had the advantage of by threatening the American people with terrorist attacks and drug gangs , they will soon find out how the American people dealt with the guerrillas in an all out war.

Yeah, that’s funny as hell, chumptard.

Around here, strawberry and apple-picking, tobacco-harvesting, working hay, and many other menial, labor-intensive, hard jobs were seasonal jobs done by local folks, until the virtual elimination of the border brought us our good friends who will work under the table (avoiding tax and FICA payments, of course), turn our neighborhoods into lawless gang territory, facilitate more poison to sell to the kids, and of course, insist that they have earned the right to be here (by not getting caught, I guess.)

Keep spewing your talking points; I’ve seen the economic decimation of families and entire communities caused by the borderless border policies of late.

OK, I’m done; go back to your fantasy world where there are no consequences.

When every organ of state welfare is doing everything it can to reach out to these people and make sure they’re receiving every handout imaginable, perhaps it’s excusable for them to think they’ve got some sort of standing.

Couple that with bilingual education in public schools for their offspring and the pandering of every retail outlet, to say nothing of the many, many employers who use illegals, and the message we send as a society is mixed, at the very best.

My brother and I did picking when we were in school. Good work.
But the stares from the illegals in the field….White boys picking strawberries…how dare them.

Libs are having a heart attack because Maine is loosening youth labor laws… yeah, I hope you were like a 27 year old student!

You know what sounds great, let’s force the fruit farmers to provide health insurance for their workers!!! /

MeatHeadinCA on July 2, 2011 at 8:51 PM

Think produce prices are high now?
When crops are left in the field to rot and the price of fruits and vegetables goes through the roof, you lot will be the first to whine.

Oh, Americans will take those picking jobs? HAHAHAHAHAhaha!

chumpThreads on July 2, 2011 at 8:26 PM

Hmmm. Higher prices for strawberries, or higher taxes, crime, U.S. bankrupty, bigger government, and Third World standards of living?

My goodness that is a tough choice! /////

No one is entitled to US citizenship.
Becoming a US citizen is a “privilege” and not a “right”

At least there was no mention of “personhood” in this post.

MeatHeadinCA on July 2, 2011 at 8:54 PM

Well, at the rate Mexico is falling apart we will have no choice but to *restore* order. Hopefully we can get some good real estate out of the deal.

Punchenko on July 2, 2011 at 8:55 PM

The use of the language by these imbeciles just astounds me. They think they’ve got a “right” to something stolen? They want to “fight”. Well… let’s go. Let’s throw down and SEE if they really want to “fight”. Let’s see how that works out for ‘em.

It’s just mind-boggling that people who come begging hat-in-hand don’t have the God-given sense of a jackrabbit to understand that belligerence isn’t going to win the day.

Murf76 on July 2, 2011 at 8:56 PM

Common sense dictates that no country can sustain prosperity with de facto open borders and a massive, unfunded welfare state.

Libertarians can argue the labor angle all they want. I get that, however they never seem to add the welfare state into their equation. It’s unsustainable. The poor and less fortunate get the shaft.

The Left, well, “racialism” is at the core of their world view. They view humanity through the prism of race. Any illegal immigration issue can only be seen as a race issue to the average Leftist. They’re also, in general, economic illiterates. Debating illegal immigration with the Left is borderline pointless.

16 through 18. Seasonal and decent pay.
But the bosses go pretty angry when you decided to do some taste testing…oh…I mean random FDA inspection.
