Leadership: Obama rejects McConnell’s offer to meet with GOP on debt ceiling

posted at 5:08 pm on June 30, 2011 by Allahpundit

It was Drudge, I think, who first drew the contrast this afternoon between O’s approach to dialogue in this story versus this one. Doesn’t it make sense, though? From the White House’s perspective, one involves a group of power-hungry fanatics who pose a potential threat to western civilization, and the other involves the Muslim Brotherhood.

But remember, he’s the adult in the room.

One of President Barack Obama’s 2012 themes will likely revolve around what his aides call “the contrast” — a portrayal of Obama as a responsible, moderate adult harassed by infantile Republicans who favor the wealthy…

“Leaders are going to lead, … that’s why they are called leaders,” he added, making an unmistakable reference to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who withdrew from the negotiations with Vice President Joe Biden last week…

Another GOP aide was more blunt. “It’s counterproductive schoolyard crap. … [It’s] awfully childish for the ‘adult in the room,’” the aide told POLITICO.

So saith a guy whose habit of “leading” by handing off important agenda items to congressional Democrats is now so infamous that even David “Pants Crease” Brooks is writing critical columns about it. To be fair, though, I’m not sure he had much choice here: His base is grumpy that the Democrats have already all but agreed to $1 trillion in cuts with little in return by way of new revenue, so he needs to be recalcitrant with Republicans to make it look like he’s drawing a line in the sand. And it’s not like anything productive comes out of his meetings with the caucus. The last one was famously “chilly” and involved Paul Ryan scolding him about his Medicare demagoguery, which might have been productive with a president who wasn’t focused utterly and exclusively on his own reelection. As it is, when it comes to Mediscaring, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Click the image to watch.

the Democrats have already all but agreed to $1 trillion in cuts with little in return by way of new revenue

Putting a stop to Obama’s regulatory jihad would increase revenue.

Raising tax rates or changing tax rules to clobber businesses is a different issue all together, but I think that’s what Democrats mean when they talk “revenue”.

And let P.BO face the consequences of having to choose.

He’s right. It’s not a conversation worth having. Just stick to your guns and refuse to allow any tax increases and makes this (long list of applicable derogatory names) eat a sh*t sandwich when he is forced to accept the deal.

Oh, and tell the public over and over again that he is a lying p.o.s.

But by making the offer McConnell does show him up as the one who will not negotiate. I like that.

Uh, did you miss the fact that presidents put forth budgets then congress approves them, shoots them down (like they did O’s first attempt 97-0 in the Senate) or marks them up/modifies them. O wanted a mulligan b/c his first budget was so unserious and pathetic that he wanted a second chance. Yet, he still hasn’t put forth another one b/c it would have to include entitlement reform, which he will not touch b/c he is a coward. Again Dems punt on the budget. What’s it been now? 800 days?

Mark Halperin was right!

ConservativePartyNow on June 30, 2011 at 5:45 PM

You know, like Rush said, why even have a debt ceiling? Why can’t the Republicans hammer away on this. Come out with TV ads. Bring it home to the American people.

Why oh why can they not think of what all the rest of us think about? TV and radio ads! Keep asking “Why even have a debt ceiling if it just gets constantly raised every time they reach their limit! Use a credit card for you commercial! You just keep spending and when you reach the limit you cry like a baby and demand a higher limit,.. then when that gets reached you cry like a baby and demand another higher limit and keep doing it over and over, each time telling the credit card company if you don’t go further into debt your household is going to implode!

It’s not that hard of a concept to grasp! The people will understand it! There is no point at all to having a debt limit or a budget if people are just going to spend into infinity!

All the freaking cry baby made up arguments that the Democrats use to scare people about medicaid being cut, people going homeless and all can be made in truth by Republicans! It is Democrats that are destroying people’s lives! It is the Democrat party that is destroying the economy and if the Republicans can not be man enough to stand up and take it to the people and fight like men they do not deserve their jobs! Why the heck are they there if they cannot fight for their country! This is basic common sense! No government can spend into infinity without consequences! But the freaking GOP is so afraid! What the heck are they waiting for Gods sakes! We ought to be hearing initiatives and tactics and events every 6 hours out of the GOP! It is the GOP that ought to be making the Democrat’s heads spin 9 ways to Sunday!

All I ever hear is so and so sent a letter to Obama. So and so gave a little speech on the floor! So and so sent another freaking letter to Obama! I am sick of hearing the GOP whine and complain that Obama isn’t leading! What the heck does that even mean? It’s just another stinking excuse to sit on their rear ends and do nothing!

Who in their right minds wants Obama to lead anyway! Where the heck do you think he would take you?! Every freaking day the GOP ought to be stirring things up! Heck, I don’t know what they ought to be doing, I don’t live in congress and I don’t know all the rules and procedures! But they have go to be able to do more than they are! Start a freaking bonfire down in the middle of DC for crying out loud! Strip naked and jump out of an airplane but do something other than just send Obama letters and whine and cry about him not leading!

That’s it.

He can fret and feign, he can throw his hissy fits of fury using a temporary pulpit (watch for that), but in the end he knows that he hit his peak in 2006 and early 2007 was short lived.

The Accidental Present Dunce will have a …. (I’ll be kind and let his re-election committee fill in those dots above).

When it comes to personal disposition, mannerism, deportment, affect… Obama is hauntingly reminiscent of Truman. It’s like they were cut from the same cloth.

He has even started down the road to literary fame and fortune, though I imagine he’ll need to up his game substantially if he ever hopes to be compared seriously to Truman’s groundbreaking work.
