Jay Carney: Damn right I called MSNBC to complain about Halperin’s comment

posted at 6:24 pm on June 30, 2011 by Allahpundit

What choice did he have? If they let this slide, who knows how many “Obama’s a dick” jokes would be filling the airwaves at, um, the most famously liberal cable network in America? (Then again…)

Axelrod’s taking the high road on this, which is smart, but I do think they’re bothered by it and not without reason. “Obama’s a dick” is basically the opposite of the “adult in the room” crap they’re pushing as their 2012 messaging. It’s one thing for conservative media to say stuff like that (without the profanity, natch), it’s another to have it come in bracing, sensational form on cable news from a guy like Halperin who, for better or worse (read: worse), influences the CW among Beltway political journalists. Gotta nip those unhelpful memes in the bud before they propagate; as it is, the next time The One gets snotty at a presser or during an interview, reporters will point back to Halperin’s goof as a reminder that he’s been known to be petulant now and again. And yes, granted, they’ll all be in the tank once the campaign starts hopping, but the campaign won’t be hopping for nine more months. Lots of time still for damaging reads on O to spread in the media. E.g., if the economy continues to stagger and the public finally loses patience with him, the many stories about President Spock’s aloofness might start to play differently with voters than the “cool, cerebral” way in which they were intended.

As for the oft-repeated point today that calling a Republican a dick might have been treated differently on a network known for its fondness for “teabagger” jokes, well, yes. MSNBC wants access to the administration, and while there’s almost zero chance that the White House would punish them by cutting them off — especially when Fox stands to benefit — it was probably wise to play it safe and yank Halperin pronto.

The word dick should not be regularly used as a pejorative on a professional news show, but suspending him is going overboard. Would they have complained if he called Obama a jerk? he certainly did not come across well in that speech, and even the MSM will him out on that because they know he looked bad and don’t him to continue with that rhetoric.

And yes, I know I called MSNBC’s Morning Joe professional, but you know what I mean.

How amusing is it to watch the most hatefull, divisive, name calling President in the history of this country, complain about a single off the cuff remark?

As Obama used the term ‘teabagger’ to describe millions of people did he ever once consider ANY of their feelings?

The answer is clear. There is to be one standard for what terms are used to describe Obama, and a different standard for termsused to describe the people that simply do not agree with him.

ALL HAIL the NAKED EMPEROR!

Freddy on June 30, 2011 at 6:36 PM

When I heard the Obama quotes, I knew some of his media would be upset about it. There were people in Che shirts saying “c’mon, be a little more subtle, man”. These people go to journalism school to learn how to conceal their marxist ideology while at the same time promoting it. Obama kind of gave up the game. He all but came out and said “I’m gonna try to assemble a majority to my side by getting them angry at the people they envy!”. He’s a ham-fisted marxist.

I tried Bing and didn’t like it. Maybe it’s improved in the last year, may give it another shot. But is it any different? Microsoft is liberal as Google. Bill Gates was the force behind a ballot initiative last year to introduce an income tax on the “the rich” in Washington. It failed by a vote of 70/30 but Gates spent millions of his own money pushing for it.

Two things:

a). Anyone think libs are furious that this didn’t happen on FOX?

b). This makes 3 MSNBC suspensions that I can think of – Olbie, Shultz, and Halperin. Does anyone recall if any on-air personalities were ever suspended from FOX and CNN, and do the total of those suspensions surpass the 3 that I listed for MSNBC? It seems MSNBC showcases people who tend to get in trouble a lot, while the other networks, despite their flaws, employ people who don’t cross the line. MSNBC always looked bad to me, but this suspension stuff is really making them look really bad.

And of course, technically “dick” isn’t one of the 7 words anyway…so a producer might not be tuning in to that word, expecting a really bad word…”dick” probably went right by him while he was waiting for the bad word.

I think there is something far more disturbing at play here. The media is afraid of the Obama regime. It isn’t simply a matter of access — as you say, MSNBC will always get access. It’s something more than that. It is a fear, I believe, that people will be destroyed, lives will be destroyed, friends and family will be destroyed, if one crosses the regime. This is on the same day that Sen. Marco Rubio referred to Obama as a “left-wing strong man.” Is this country — and its media — really going to sit by while the presidency descends into Hugo Chavez territory? Are we really going to do that? We’re allowed to call our president a d*ck. It might be unseemly, but it is not a crime. Will it be soon?
