Halperin: Obama was a … Update: MSNBC suspends Halperin “indefinitely”

posted at 8:45 am on June 30, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

I’ve been in radio for a few years now, and the first rule in broadcasting is this — always assume the microphones are hot and that you’re going live. (The second rule is never assume that the incoherent caller is drunk, but that’s a story for another day.) Mark Halperin apparently forgot that first rule this morning on MSNBC, and decided to give a rather blunt assessment of Barack Obama’s performance in yesterday’s press conference. Halperin’s use of language went out live, thanks to a producer who couldn’t operate the seven-second delay:

Mark Halperin, editor-at-large for Time, called President Obama “a dick” on Thursday on a popular MSNBC morning show and then quickly apologized.

“I thought he was a dick yesterday,” Halperin, who also is a senior political analyst for MSNBC, said on Morning Joe, referring to the President’s conduct during his press conference.

Halperin later apologized for his language, but the fuss seems a little overblown. “Dick” isn’t a word that needs to be censored; for one thing, it’s a proper name used by a number of politicians, including Dick Durbin, who’s second in Democratic leadership in the Senate. It’s also a playground word for “jerk” or “penis,” but hardly an obscenity. Either way, the producer shouldn’t be blamed for missing the delay button.

Halperin should be apologizing for a lack of imagination. He’s right in that the President acted like a pouting, sullen adolescent during the press conference, whining about having to answer for the constitutionality of sending men and women into combat without asking Congress for authorization. Obama bizarrely blamed the fiscal crisis on a small coterie of corporate-jet owners, a heretofore unknown juggernaut of economic destruction. Instead of acting presidential, Obama gave us a hissy fit for over sixty minutes. And the best Halperin can do is “dick”?

Maybe Halperin is just channeling his inner Spicoli:

Update:  MSNBC decides to get a little dickish with Halperin:

“Mark Halperin’s comments this morning were completely inappropriate and unacceptable. We apologize to the President, The White House and all of our viewers,” in a statement by MSNBC spokesperson Jeremy Gaines. “We strive for a high level of discourse and comments like these have no place on our air. Therefore, Mark will be suspended indefinitely from his role as an analyst.” …

“I completely agree with everything in MSNBC’s statement about my remark. I believe that the step they are taking in response is totally appropriate,” Halperin said in a statement. “Again, I want to offer a heartfelt and profound apology to the President, to my MSNBC colleagues, and to the viewers. My remark was unacceptable, and I deeply regret it.”

An indefinite suspension for saying “dick” on the air?  Oh, please.  Halperin won’t have to go dig ditches — he works for Time, not MSNBC — but this is still far, far overblown.  It was a dumb remark, but if MSNBC suspended everyone who made dumb remarks on their channel, they wouldn’t have any hosts left. At most, this warranted a couple of days off the air, especially with Halperin’s real-time apology.

Did MSNBC get mad because of the word, or because it was aimed at Obama?

Mark Halperin(being held upside down off the side of a building by David Axelrod): “All right, all right, I apologize. I’m really really sorry. I apologize unreservedly. I do. I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you or your family, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such slander at any time in the future.”

Dick isn’t the word I would have used, but then again I’m a construction worker.. Obama couldn’t even get the age of his daughter correct. This man has a room temperature I.Q. and a real evil streak that he can’t contain. No wonder the Liberals have spent millions hiding his transcripts.

Keemo on June 30, 2011 at 8:54 AM

MSLSD must really be hurting for technical competence if the “producer” can’t find that really big button that says DUMP on the audio delay system whether needed or not.

Marcus on June 30, 2011 at 8:50 AM

The Paris Hilton comparison is not new. Lots of libs have gone there. My favorite though was Bill Press on MSDNC last year calling Palin the “new Anita Bryant”. As if 99.9% of the population even knows who that is(I only know because of Leslie Nielsen’s reference to her in Airplane!, a 31 year-old movie). Not to mention the comparison makes absolutely no sense. Palin is the same as a pop singer who hates gays?

Great synopsis. Still, I’m loving the fact that a truly honest moment (albeit understated) was captured on tape. I’ve been listening to more of the presser this morning and I guess I should be immune to the President’s condescension, but it always shocks me. Major league, unparalleled, breathtaking, revolting dickishness.

Tommy_G on June 30, 2011 at 8:51 AM

They were bought out by Comcast.

I will attest that Comcast has had good technical personnel, but the moment you get past the front line technicians you face an abyss of ignorance and disingenuous stupidity. That is now going to be the ‘producer’ level at MSLSD.

rob verdi on June 30, 2011 at 9:05 AM

No biggie. Glad he’s finally figured Obama out.

If they had any sense of honor or pride, the numerous members of the media, including Halperin, Brooks and Krauthamster, who in 08 assurred the nation that Obama was temperamentally well suited to the job, and since have discovered that the opposite is the case, would issue a public apology and then resign.

But as Thomas Sowell has pointed out, “public intellectuals” are never held to account for the horrendous damage they have done. And so they keep on working their destructive magic.

I think we’re missing the big picture here. The issue isn’t whether Obama is a “dick” or not. That’s an issue for another thread. The real issue is that Obama is petty, spiteful and vindictive person. What is he going to wind up doing to MSNBC and this Mark Haleperin fellow in retaliation? An offense like this cannot go unpunished.
