Great news: Obama has no idea what to do with captured terrorists

posted at 8:45 am on June 29, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Say, anyone have any idea how to handle a captured terrorist?  Apparently not anyone in the White House, even after more than two years of running the war on terror, according to Vice Admiral William McRaven’s confidence-builder in yesterday’s testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee.  While Leon Panetta told Congress a few months ago that the Obama administration had a process figured out, they seem to have kept it from the people doing the capturing:

The top military official involved in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden said Tuesday that the Obama administration has no clear plan for handling terrorist leaders if they are caught alive outside a war zone.

Vice Adm. William H. McRaven told a Senate panel that contingency plans for detaining terrorism suspects are developed on an ad hoc basis and approved by the White House, but that there are no set rules. “That is always a difficult issue for us,” he testified. “No two cases seem to be alike.”

Panetta said earlier this year that if the US captured Osama bin Laden or Ayman al-Zawahiri, the terrorist masterminds would likely be taken to Guantanamo Bay.  That’s news to McRaven, who told Senator Kelly Ayotte that Gitmo is still “off the table.”  Rendition is off the table, too, at least not to the countries most likely to have originated the terrorists — Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan, and Afghanistan — because of  “political resistance.”

So what do we end up doing?  Oh, you’ll love this plan, emphases mine:

In response to senators’ questions, McRaven said that “in many cases” prisoners captured in secret operations by Navy SEALs or the Army’s Delta Force are taken to a U.S. Navy ship until they can be tried in a U.S. court or transferred to the custody of an allied country. But if neither option turns out to be feasible, the prisoner is ultimately let go, he said.

“If we can’t do either one of those, then we will release that individual,” McRaven said in response to a question from Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.). “I mean, that becomes the unenviable option, but it is an option.”

And so we get to the back-door plan to close Gitmo and end military commissions for captured terrorists.  If the Obama administration can’t try a terrorist in criminal court, it just lets the terrorist go rather than use the military commission system created and authorized by Congress to deal with them.  Who cares if the terrorist goes on to kill Americans?  Hey, at least we didn’t use that awful Gitmo — the one we’re still using, and that Panetta thought was good enough for bin Laden and Zawahiri just four months ago.

Perhaps the Senate can get more information on the Terrorist Catch and Release Plan.  How many times have we had to use the “unenviable option” already?  Has any of the released terrorists conducted any attacks afterward?  Did we lose any Americans in capturing released terrorists?  When exactly did the war on terror transform into a sport-fishing expedition?

You’ve got to be kidding me. And what happens if/when a released terrorist kills Americans or any other innocent civilians? Do they think they can sweep that under the rug? Even the drive-bys would be hard-pressed to spin that one.

How about having Debbie Wassershultzie go down to Gitmo and get these guys to run for Congress as Democrats?

They both hate the U.S. as currently setup.

They both are definite “share the wealth” types.

They both think the U.S. sucks.

They both hate Conservatives.

The list goes on and on…..

As I pointed out in comment after comment prior to the 2008 election, Obama was unqualified because he agitated for oil rich Iraq to be conceded to al Qaeda and Iran. He was elected despite his advocacy for what would have been the inevitable disastrous outcome of premature withdrawal from Iraq. Nothing he does is a surprise to me.

“If we can’t do either one of those, then we will release that individual,” McRaven said in response to a question from Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.). “I mean, that becomes the unenviable option, but it is an option.”

The President is responsible for the policy. This is not unAmerican, it is anti-American. It leads to future deaths of American military personnel and civilians.

What to do with captured terrorists? Well there are an awful lot of sharks going hungry. Along the lines of a Feed the Children program, I propose a Feed the Sharks program. Why won’t anyone think of the poor, hungry sharks?

… are taken to a U.S. Navy ship until they can be tried in a U.S. court or transferred to the custody of an allied country. But if neither option turns out to be feasible, the prisoner is ultimately let go …

And by “let go”, I hope he means – from 40,000 feet above the Atlantic Ocean.

locomotivebreath1901 on June 29, 2011 at 9:48 AM

Did you ever in your wildest dreams or worst nightmares believe the country would be where we are today?

-3 YEARS of a dismal economy (this started in late 2008, during the election campaign, right?)

-2+ YEARS of the worst unemployment in our country’s history, including the Great Depression!

-The absolute and deliberate bankruptcy of the world’s largest economy by spending 1.5 times MORE than the federal government makes in a year and doubling the national debt, tripling the deficit of overspending, and having the temerity to blame spending at three times his predecessor’s rate on his predecessor. The complete lapse of logic and fiscal integrity on a scale NEVER seen before is staggering and amazing. And the lies used to cover it up are manifold and beyond belief by any credible observer.

-Completely assinine foreign policy, throwing old allies to the Islamist wolves, upsetting centuries old alliances between the English Speaking peoples, rendering our reputation prostrate before tinpots and minor warlords, and bowing before COMMUNIST dictators to render honors and obeisance, and making the US the weakest it has ever been since before 1900.

-Ignoring military leadership in fighting 3 wars, one of which was certainly a war of choice for His Nibs, and using troops as purely political window dressing with ZERO intention of ever pursuing Victory, or even half Victory, because the President just doesn’t care about advancing American Power, or Security. (His “maybe they’ll leave us alone if we just don’t do anything to piss them off” policy works so well doesn’t it?)

-Sheer incompetence in the administration of day to day federal government business which impacts all manner of job creation, business advancement, and improvement in the well being and status of every American. And the politicizing of every activity the federal government touches, including favoritism in contracting, obstruction of innocent advancement and progress in the private sector, and over regulation of every industry in the US while ignoring foreign interventions which harm US businesses, property, and citizens.

-A completely thuggish police approach to any minor transgression or misuse of government resources by his opponents, but a complete and total atempt to cover up every transgression of same buy his political allies.

-Government intervention into every private matter possible. Gay marriage, environmental ownership, property rights, contractual law, tax laws, free speech and freedom of association rights, constitutional bases for all legal proceedings, the list is long and distinguished, isn’t it?

-A completely anti-Business environment, leading to the worst profits for US businesses and deplorable job creation environment since the Great Depression. The administration hasn’t yet found a business it can’t demonize, or shakedown for more taxes, reparations for slavery, or campaign contributions.

-Firing of whistleblowers, once so lauded by liberals as patriots for exposing corruption in government (which this administration has demonstrated in massive ammounts)

-Corruption in the US federal government on a scale usually reserved for Mexico, Zimbabwe, or the Middle East.

-FAVORITISM of the worst kind, in political perks for Dhimmicrats, pork for Dhimmicrats, protection and obstruction from Justice and investigation of Dhimmicrat constituencies, including ACORN, New Black Panthers, Unions, corrupt Dhimmicratic Congressmen and lobbyists, favoritism for the businesses of big Dhimmicratic donors, and ONLY big Dhimmicratic donors.

-And, finally, seizure of the press propaganda machine for Dhimmicratic purposes only, without any strings visible whatsoever. If there were any strings present, I am sure we’d have known about it from irate journalists who hate being told what to do by Republican leaning editors and government employees, but it is astounding that a lemming-like mindset exists so strongly in a “profession” that is supposedly dedicated to their core to seek out and find the Truth about corruption and malfeasance anywhere in the social fabric of society, and yet they cannot find a shred of evidence, even when examining Dhimmicrat’s own words, spoken freely, about how they are cheating and undermining the very fabric of the country. This is truly the most striking coincidence ever in my lifetime.

Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and all dictators begin their careers by seizing the media dn the press and using it to further their own propaganda aims. Mr. Obama has not even had to ask for assistance from the press in this area, as every single freaking one of the “journalists” in business today is in a slobbering love affair over his pecs, his speeches, and his good intentions… without saying a word about his corruption, his ego, and his lies and malfeasance.

Communism, National Socialism, and banana republic dictatorships have more in common with the America of today than at any time in our nation’s history. All due to Dhimmicrats in Congress, and their luck in getting an idiot elected President, and in being faced by the weakest, most corrupt Republican opposition possible.

The nightmare is far from over. Until every one of these idiots is voted out of office, America will not be safe and will be on a path to the ashheap of broken empires and nations.

This is the exact point ive been making since the killing of Bin Laden. Not that the death of that sh-ithead was unwarranted: but I firmly believe that a top-tier tactical unit such as SEALS would have been more than capable of taking Osama alive. By all accounts, it didnt seem as if Bin Laden exactly “fought to the death” to keep from being taken alive. Seems like the harshest thing he hurled at the SEAL operators was his wife. They were sent in with a clear mission, straight from Obama himself: Kill Bin Laden, damn whatever intel they may have gathered by taking him alive.

Think about it in terms of this same story: what the hell would Obama have done with a living breathing Osama? Backtrack on every pledge and promise by housing him in Gitmo, waterboarding him, etc. But if he is dead…well…none of that messy political problem to deal with.

To me, this showed tremendous political cowardice on behalf of Obama.

It has long been apparent that Obama has NO military or intelligence strategy. He just has a re-election strategy, and everything else is an extension of that.

Two of the more useful tools in Islam’s Eternal War, military tribunals and Gitmo, are very unpopular with Obama’s base.

Let’s see, national security or happy Kos Kids, national security or happy Huffpoopers…Hmmm…

Now he is going to render futile much of the blood and treasure spent in Afghanistan, because he thinks it will help him get re-elected. Screw national security, the most important thing in the world to Obama is for Obama to be re-elected.
