WSJ: “Republican campaign veteran” tells us Perry has decided to run
posted at 2:37 pm on June 23, 2011 by Allahpundit
His team is still denying it, and people I know who know people on his team are also still denying it, but until Perrymania ebbs among the base I’m milking this buzz for easy content with both hands.
The important question now: Will new rumors about Perry getting in derail the momentum that’s building for Pataki 2012?
A Republican campaign veteran tells us that Texas Governor Rick Perry has decided to run for President, though the official word from Team Perry is still a definite maybe.
Our normally reliable Republican source reports that Mr. Perry has surveyed the field and decided to get in the race later this summer, perhaps around the time of the national prayer meeting that Mr. Perry is hosting on August 6 at a Houston football stadium. Our source also reports that Mr. Perry is aiming to compete in the Iowa Straw Poll, even though it occurs just a week later, on August 13. The thinking is that apparent front-runner Mitt Romney “does not reflect the Republican Party” and is therefore vulnerable to a credible challenge from the right, especially after Mr. Romney’s recent squishy remarks on global warming.
RCP reported last night that his advisors are quietly reaching out to operatives in New Hampshire too. Help me with the timeline here, though: He’s going to get in just a week before Ames, by which time he’ll presumably have done little or no campaigning in-state? Huh. That sounds nutty at first glance, but it actually could be a shrewd form of bet-hedging. If he jumps in now, goes all-out on the trail in Iowa, and ends up disappointing in the straw poll, the media will sink him with Fred Thompson “flash in the pan” comparisons. If he skips the straw poll altogether, though, Iowans might feel snubbed, especially with Bachmann and Pawlenty competing hard there. Perry can’t afford to alienate them; unlike Romney, he needs to do well in Iowa to have a path to the nomination. So he’s going to compromise — he’ll jump in shortly before the straw poll, hoping to ride the aftermath of his prayer event in Houston to a shockingly strong finish and then leverage that buzz into a major campaign. Conversely, if he does poorly, it’s no biggie. He’ll simply blame it on the fact that he’d only been in the race for a week and hadn’t spent much time in the state yet, etc. Lots of upside and little downside to this strategy, especially since (per Huckabee 2008) losing Ames doesn’t mean you’ll lose the caucuses.
The best sign that he’s running, perhaps: A whole new round of rumors that he’s gay being spread by his opponents. Ace wonders how the media rationalizes running stuff like that without any evidence, but we already know how from the Tucson shootings. First someone says, “The shooter must have been inspired by Palin’s crosshairs map,” then that non-fact starts to churn because it’s simply irresistible to the media as a capital-N Narrative, and then when it turns out there’s nothing to it, the coverage shifts to whether the Narrative is a political problem for its target even though it’s not true. Report the facts, and if the facts aren’t there for you, report the misperception of those facts because, hey, that’s a political fact on the ground too. “Will gay rumors hurt Perry on the trail?” thus becomes a handy way of spreading those rumors without fully taking responsibility for spreading them. Sleazy, but as I say, we’ve seen this before.

Perry’s like Romney?
darwin on June 23, 2011 at 6:14 PM
When Perry can get Palin-type numbers in the comment posts, then I’ll take notice.
Until then, I’ll eagerly wait for a new post about what Palin’s bus is or isn’t doing to help drive that meaningful discussion over 1000.
;-)

I mean all of them
windansea on June 23, 2011 at 6:15 PM
Run, Rick, Run!
He would wipe the floor with Obama. And I’d be willing to bet $100 that ordinary Americans would vote for him in droves. Yes, America is pining for the prosperous Bush years and the SRM and its merry band of Marxists hates that fact.
Run Rick!
Key West Reader on June 23, 2011 at 6:16 PM
That’s a nice ticket, you put together there ;)
Dr Evil on June 23, 2011 at 6:16 PM
Sounds like you want him no matter what. Just don’t send him any pics. That’s the last thing we need, another pic scandal.
darwin on June 23, 2011 at 6:16 PM
Great, we could use another alpha male in the running.
(Other one being Bachmann)
I keed, I keed.

Nooo. Windandsea is a Romneybot.

I know, I don’t think the Democrats thought this smear all the way through LOL!

Yes. Read the last sentence in that quote.

Romneybot? I sensed something was odd with that one.

I don’t think the folks who are starting in with the gay rumors understand what kind of politician Rick Perry is. He’s been at this political campaigning thingy for awhile. This isn’t his first rodeo. I suspect he will respond with a smile, and remark, I love my wife, but you know we’re all sinners “Wink – Wink”
He’s just got his ways.

Dr Evil on June 23, 2011 at 6:24 PM
Dear God, I hope he doesn’t respond that way. Joking about cheating? Sorry, that sort of response would turn my stomach.

Okay, I’m jumping back into the thread to make a couple of points. The first being, I’m a Sarah supporter (hey, it sounds better than all the other names being tossed out there for us), and I would more than anything like to see her run, because she holds positions that are not only closest to mine, but are also the best for America. If she does not run, and Perry does, I would think about throwing my support behind him, IF……
…his conservative beliefs are as wide and deep as Reagan’s were, considering both men are/were former Democrats. I want someone whose conservatism is down to the bone, into every sinew and fiber of the person. That’s why I support Palin; and that would be why I would support Perry if she doesn’t run and if he proved he was of the same caliber.
I don’t want to hold my nose and vote again–I’ve done that too many times in my lifetime. I’d like to vote and BREATHE EASY that I finally made the best choice for America.
theotherone on June 23, 2011 at 6:29 PM
yeah, that’s why I am defending Perry on every thread, because it helps Romney. No, that can’t be it, unseen says Perry helps Palin.
I think it will come down to Perry vs Romney, I support Perry because he is more conservative and more electable.
windansea on June 23, 2011 at 6:32 PM
Funny how rumors of little Bammie’s homosexual tendencies are strictly verboten in the old liberal media.
slickwillie2001 on June 23, 2011 at 6:33 PM
That’s pretty much how I see it shaping up too. But of course Perry needs to actually, you know, get in the race for it to happen.
MJBrutus on June 23, 2011 at 6:35 PM
I think what most of us fail to understand, is that these great Americans are sitting here, watching in horror at what is going on with our Country under this Marxist regime.
If that fact alone doesn’t return one to their original Reagan Conservative Roots and stir the soul to do something to stop us from total destruction nothing will. America is having a “Come to Jesus” moment and that includes some leaders that know, in their souls, that what is going on is wrong and must be stopped.
Don’t underestimate Divine Providence and Mercy.

Hell, anyone that lives in Texas can figuratively see Mexico from their houses. All we have to do is drive by Home Depot and you’ll find a huddling mass of them. They’ve invaded every nook and cranny of this state.
TxAnn56 on June 23, 2011 at 6:36 PM
I can see 200 Mexico’s from my house and I live in Floriduh.

Not to worry. Delta has partnered with Saudi Air and formed a no “Jews” airline
Funny that. I had a dream last night of inventing an airline with the name “Safe Flight”. All aircraft would be painted Porky Pig Pink with a big pig nose on the nose of the plane, where Flight Attendants serve nothing but bacon laden appetizers and where those who board the plane get to go through the TSA (now unionized by AFL-CIO) and dog sniffing ‘checkers’ as they make entry to the air craft.
Key West Reader on June 23, 2011 at 6:52 PM
He’s a politician not a saint. You know the difference right? If you don’t have a sense of humor that’s your problem, not his.
Dr Evil on June 23, 2011 at 7:06 PM
It is odd because I think he has a strong gay following. Not one of the candidates were pro same sex marriage in 2008. I don’t remember if Obama promised to overturn Don’t ask, Don’t tell on the campaign trail? I always thought the attraction of Obama for gays was sexual. Like many women who voted for him said, they had sexual fantasies about Obama…..I don’t get it, I just don’t see his sex appeal. He’s like a younger brother who is always hitting you up for a loan LOL! Rick Perry is an alpha male – Obama is just too cool too rule LOL!
Dr Evil on June 23, 2011 at 7:11 PM
Really; if Delta’s No-Jew flights pass legal review, that opens the door to No-muslim flights, which would be a great selling point for those concerned with islamic terrorism.

I don’t know if Perry is running yet but the feelers are definitely being put out!..:)

It got quite in here..Too Quite!..:)

I think Perry should run, I think he could cause a stampede toward the Republican party. It would be quite refreshing to vote for someone, and not against someone else.

Oh, I see! Politicians always make jokes about cheating on their wives with male partners! Oh, LOLOLOL! Sooooooo funny! If you hadn’t set me straight, I’d have never known!!
*BARF* Your ridiculous “joke” is not the way to tamp down vile and disgusting rumors.

Do you really think I care what you think? Really? I don’t think being Gay is vile or disgusting, that’s your interpretation -prejudice. I do think you are a narrow minded, over simplified, self righteous, humorless sad sack. Who thinks people have to agree with your version of religious morality. FYI No has to agree with you or your opinion. I certainly don’t. Oh and signing your name over again, Aslan’s Girl that’s called being pretentious.
Dr Evil on June 23, 2011 at 8:36 PM
Just for the record you cut and paste where I “Joked” or “State” that Rick Perry or any other politician should or would cheat on their wife? Where did you read that exactly? Because I didn’t type it. So you have a problem processing too?
Show me, I want to see where I typed – Rick Perry, would CHEAT ON HIS WIFE.
Dr Evil on June 23, 2011 at 8:48 PM
it’s quite remarkable how quiet
the antiPerrys flame out early, the rino/bush/gay attacks make em look rediculous, and the nistas are busy jackin the Bachmann thread.

I am a Palin supporter, but I like Perry, he’s got charm. I think he has a real shot at the White House. I don’t know if Palin is going to run, that’s what I am waiting to find out. I think a Palin/Perry top or bottom of the ticket, would be something for the Democrats to contend with.
Dr Evil on June 23, 2011 at 9:31 PM
Wonderful, a new candidate of the day for half of Hot Air to stampede to… until they learn he helped Al Gore’s campaign and various other “RINO” disqualifiers.

Wonderful.. Another Moby squish who brings up the same, lame, debunked and refuted stuff from three pages ago.

Perry/McCotter 2012!

All you who “will never vote for X” better take a good dose of reality. No matter who wins the GOP nod, they will be orders of magnitude better than Obama. Hold your noses if you must, but show up and vote Obama out if you can’t find a reason to vote someone else in.
Seriously.

Mark Levin explains the further plundering of America given another corporatist in the Oval Office, leaving America absolutely destitute with a valueless Dollar.
Like Romney, Perry is a corporatist.
While providing globalist industry near tax free status in Texas, Perry further injured Texas’ small business interests, burdening business owners with newly imposed state franchise fees.
Perry himself lobbied for his Trans Texas Highway (NAFTA corporatist enablers maintaining open borders) to exercise eminent domain to purchase private lands against the will of owners, and to award the construction contract and toll rights to an international firm based in SPAIN, denying local or even stateside bids. (Ex: Arizona firms construct complete freeways on I-35 and Hwy 183 faster than formerly contracted Texas firms, and certainly did’t claim contract rights to toll Texas highways).
At every point as the Governor of Texas, Perry buckles under, enabling the federal authoritarian abuses of power. “A strongly worded letter to Obama” is as far as Perry goes to “confront” the current administration in Washington regarding our open borders with Mexico. /as if Obama reads, any way.
maverick muse on June 25, 2011 at 9:36 AM
That explains Rick’s behind the scenes campaign to enable illegal sexual molestation abuses against citizens by the TSA.
Obama threatens TEXAS with an illegal federal authoritarian boycott of commerce, and Perry plays Obama’s tool.

Perry & Secession
maverick muse on June 25, 2011 at 11:48 AM
I hope and pray Perry is in.
The Perry bashers, who oddly enough have been posting talking points from Bill White’s ads, are rather comical.
For those of you unfamiliar with Texas politics, Bill White was the democratic contender for governor in the last election. Yes, I opted my daughter out of the vaccine that everyone wants to gripe about. We DID have the option.
Is Perry perfect? No. As far as I can see, so far he is the best in the bunch. A Perry/Palin ticket (in either order), or a Perry/West ticket would just be a dream!
I love the Great State of Texas and Perry is the man to run! I would LOVE to see Perry debate the current denizen of the White House, you know, the precedent!
RUN RICK, RUN!
MITX on June 25, 2011 at 1:40 PM
I guess it comes down to this:
If given the choice –
1) Perry (or preferred GOP candidate. Since this is a Perry thread, I put Perry)
2) Obama
