Weak: Obama punts on gay marriage at NY LGBT fundraiser
posted at 10:07 pm on June 23, 2011 by Allahpundit
Remember, his base had been looking forward to this speech as the moment when he might finally finally finally confirm what everyone suspects by admitting that he supports gay marriage. The stars were aligned: It was an LGBT event, so the crowd would have been ecstatic. The New York legislature’s on the brink of approving a gay marriage bill, so the dramatic timing would have been spectacular. And his aides reportedly have been debating whether he should finally declare his true position, so the expectations for tonight were understandably high. And yet … he just couldn’t do it. I honestly though he might, although that was silly of me in hindsight. This guy just finished short-circuiting a war for purely electoral reasons; why would he then turn around and alienate seniors and black Democrats by suddenly embracing gay marriage? Makes no sense. Can’t believe I thought there was a chance. Ah well.
That said, you owe it to yourself to watch these two clips, not because you’ll learn anything but because you’ll be watching a B.S. artist at the very top of his game. Check out how close he gets to endorsing gay marriage without ever quite endorsing it. All the rhetoric about equality and discrimination and progress and change that would have seemed impossible a few years ago sounds like a prelude to the big announcement — but he never quite arrives there. He gets raucous applause for saying “gay couples deserve the same legal rights as every other couple in this country,” but that’s an endorsement of civil unions, not the big M, and no doubt he’d spin it that way if a voter ever confronted him about it. The second clip is an even lamer dodge: When he finally gets around to mentioning the New York bill, the best he can do is congratulate the locals for taking up the issue and having an ol’ fashioned public debate about it because, hey, that’s what democracy is all about. It reminded me of his non-answer about the Ground Zero mosque way back when. The issue at the time was, “Should they or shouldn’t they build it?” Obama’s take: “They have a constitutional right to build it.” Which is super, but conspicuously doesn’t answer the question. Tonight the question was, “Should or shouldn’t New York legalize gay marriage?” Obama’s take: “Democracy is good.” Present. And yet the crowd loved him, despite his electorally-driven refusal to lead on their pet issue. Remember the time he compared himself to LeBron? This is a triple-double in winning votes while saying basically nothing. Click the images to watch.

It’s so easy to stop a gay marriage campaigner in their tracks. First, ask them if they believe in equal rights for all. When they say yes, ask them why they believe married couples – gay or straight – should have any more rights than unmarried couples. While they’re trying to work that one out, ask them why they want to discriminate against unmarried couples by demanding special rights for gay married couples.

I can’t even listen to him speak anymore.
In 2 1/2 years I think I’ve only seen pics of he and Michelle actually in the White House a dozen times. It’s my Progressive Survival instinct.
We had a Progressive Governor here for 8 long years and I managed to turn the radio or TV off for those long years and only heard him speak a dozen times he was such a liar.

The thing about homosexuals,.. I divide them into two groups. You’ve got your leftist moronic activists who can’t see or feel past their zippers or own personal agendas, and then you have all the others.
Homosexuals who align themselves with the left, and insist on destroying things like marriage and the military, are only fooling themselves. They are being used by the Democrats for other purposes. Democrat support for DADT was more about destroying the conservative foundation of the military than it was about supporting gays. The same with support for gay marriage. Democrats don’t give a rip about homosexuals. They just hate marriage. And gays might like to pretend that they are a large part of the population, but Democrats know they aren’t, but they’ll take whosoever votes they can get. And they’ll throw bones to whomever they have to for as long as they need to to get what they want. And then, once they have achieved their real goals, the only constituency that is going to matter to them is their ruling class.
I have always been amazed at how some of these groups will sacrifice so much, will even embrace a police state and total loss of all other freedoms, just so they can proclaim they won something, they elevated themselves to some level. Homosexuals activist will align themselves with a party that is destroying our nation, destroying our economy, destroying freedom all so they can one day say they they got “gay marriage!”
Good! And when they get married there won’t be a country left here worth living in.

President Obama: Less Talk, More Action on GLBT Rights Issues!
***********
During his presidential campaign, Obama promised to seek the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (“DADT”) and the Defense of Marriage Act (“DOMA”) and to pursue the enactment of statutory measures that prohibit discrimination by employers on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
And in a dramatic display of metrosexual realness,
Obama
described himself as a “fierce advocate” of GLBT rights.

There’s very little downside for him to just man up and do it. We already don’t like him, so it won’t change anything there. Liberal whites want him to say it. Sad to say, blacks will vote for him only marginally less if he does; there’s enough time for him to be forgiven or for the uproar to dissipate. Hell, I’d even give him credit (still not my vote) if he actually makes a bold stand.
So why does he dance around it? Is it not what we think (that he wants to but can’t for political reasons)? Is it that he really doesn’t agree with it personally, but plays to the gullible base to keep them strung along?

There is nothing Conservative about supporting gay marriage. This is not about marriage but about normalizing homosexuality and intimidating anyone who dares object to it. If it was just about rights they would go after adoption agencies and force them to shut down for not adopting to gay couples.

I would support gay marriage if gay marriage was actually about gay marriage. But it’s not. It is about criminalizing and punishing those that do not support gay marriage or the “homosexual lifestyle”…namely Christians. If NY passes this law and gay’s are allowed to marry, watch what happens to priest, preachers, laymen who will refuse to marry them because it is against their religious beliefs. They will be sued/prosecuted under the hate crimes laws they have in NY.
Look what happened a couple of weeks ago at Cisco. A contractor lost his job because he wrote a book were he supported traditional marriage. He never expressed his views at work, but a manager Googled his name and found the book, reported him to HR and he was let go that day. The HR person even praised the manager for “outing” the guy. Again, the guy NEVER discussed his personal views at work. This will become the norm as gay activist use the new law to punish those that disagree with them.
Gay marriage isn’t about gay marriage.
ramrants on June 23, 2011 at 10:48 PM
You cannot be conservative, and claim the right to nanny state regulate freedom. I am with this loony left-winger on the issue.
Southernblogger on June 23, 2011 at 10:51 PM
That’s all well and good, but imposing gay marriage without a referendum is not acceptable. It offends the moral code of far too many people to allow insulated legislators or judges to have the final say on an issue such as this.

I guess it’s more acceptable to lie for political reasons than to tell the truth — if you’re a lib.

dedalus on June 23, 2011 at 11:05 PM
Good one, and he is dead wrong. Those who love freedom ought to oppose gay marriage because it is helping lead to moral confusion about objective right and wrong. The breakdown of the traditional family plays into the hands of Statists who want the government to raise our kids and tell them what they think is right and wrong.
Blue Collar Todd on June 23, 2011 at 11:06 PM

HornetSting on June 23, 2011 at 11:07 PM
I absolutely agree with that and I don’t believe I stated otherwise. It should be a state by state issue and let the folks decide. It is a generational thing like Pot, eventually it will be accepted. I personally find the thought of two guys pretty puke-worthy. I just don’t feel it is right to discriminate.
Southernblogger on June 23, 2011 at 11:08 PM
The govt is supposed to enforce the Constitution, not morality laws. I am personally a Christian, but it is between them and God.
Southernblogger on June 23, 2011 at 11:10 PM
Good point. Also, it’s apparently more admirable to be unprincipled than principled — if you’re a lib. That explains Romney’s “frontrunner” status.

Yoop on June 23, 2011 at 11:14 PM
Fair enough. The general companion to “government control over marriage should be minimized” is usually “by whatever means it happens.”
I am tired of hearing that gay marriage is inevitable in this country, so states had better start voting on it. You tell me that a collection of politicians represents the moral fabric of a society and I’m going to tell you you’re wacky.
KingGold on June 23, 2011 at 11:15 PM
F a b u l o u s!!!!!
Tim_CA on June 23, 2011 at 11:16 PM
Also, the breakdown of the traditional family (i.e., more single moms) means more power for the state, because single moms vote overwhelmingly for nanny-state Dems (“Take care of me!!!”), while married moms vote overwhelmingly Republican (“Keep your hands off my money!!!”).
Splashman on June 23, 2011 at 11:17 PM
Nixon-like tricky language, but it still won’t wash. Gay couples, just like gay individuals, have the same legal marriage rights as non-gay couples. That is, regardless of their sexual orientation, if they are the same sex they may not marry, if they are not the same sex they may marry.
Here’s a clear line of demarcation for you folks who can’t figure out the difference between conservatives and libertarians. A libertarian would say, “Keep your big government out of my bedroom!,” and a conservative would say, “If we can’t go to bat for a 5000-year-old custom we should just take the ‘conserve’ part out of our name!”

Hummer53 on June 23, 2011 at 11:29 PM
Then you should not be supporting something, or appeasing something that will lead to the persecution of other Christians. A society that embraces and promotes homosexuality is not going to be one that tolerates Christians. Will you realize this when Christians are required to be re-educated because of their view on homosexuality. Oops, already happening. How much worse will it get after gay marriage is the law of the land?

Obama’s single problem with endorsing this special interest by behavior group, isn’t that he, the self-proclaimed Christian, abhors it. It is that his Black community doesn’t accept it and he badly needs their votes in 2012 in order to finish closing the door on America as a free and sovereign nation.

Here’s the thing: he wants the homosexual vote, and more important their money. But the polls – real polls not Allahpundit’s push polls – finds gay marriage deeply unpopular, especially among the minorities he needs for the election.
This gives the lie to the “inevitability” meme the progressive homosexual agenda has been pushing.
