OJ Simpson to admit to murders?

posted at 8:40 am on June 23, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Call off the search at American golf courses everywhere for the murderer of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.  According to the National Enquirer and reported in the Daily Mail,  OJ Simpson has admitted to the murders and will do so again in a televised interview with Oprah Winfrey — and will claim self-defense, if the report is accurate:

O.J Simpson has confessed to Oprah Winfrey that he murdered his former wife, it has been reported.

The talk show host made headlines recently saying that one of her regrets was never having got the shamed former sportsman to confess to the killing.

And it appears her wish may well have come true with reports Simpson has already told one of her producers in an interview from jail that he knifed ex-wife Nicole in self-defence – a confession he will now repeat to the talk show queen during a spectacular televised sit down interview. …

He told the producer: “Tell Oprah that yes, I did it. I killed Nicole, but it was in self-defence. She pulled a knife on me and I had to defend myself”,’ the insider was quoted as saying.

Winfrey last week expressed her hope to land the interview on the condition that Simpson confess his role in the murders:

Oprah Winfrey wants to interview O.J. Simpson on the Oprah Winfrey Network to help put the network on the ratings map — on the condition that he promises to use the opportunity to say he killed his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson.

“I have a dream of O.J. Simpson confessing to me,” Winfrey told an enthusiastic crowd of cable industry suits attending the National Cable & Telecommunications Association convention in Chicago, according to news media reports.

“And I am going to make that happen, people. I don’t just want the interview. I want the interview on the condition that you are ready, Mr. Simpson,” she added.

Paula Zahn questioned Winfrey as to why she thought she could get Simpson to confess after having been acquitted.  A better question might be why not.  Legally, Simpson has very little to concern him with a confession.  Having been acquitted of the murders, he cannot be tried again.  He has already been found civilly liable for the deaths with a multi-million dollar judgment in force against him, but since he’s doing a long stretch for armed robbery in Nevada, that judgment hardly is at the top of his concerns, either.  If indeed Simpson confessed to a Winfrey producer, the only reason would be to attempt a rehabilitation in public opinion, and this explanation won’t cut it — for reasons we’ll return to momentarily.

John Sexton at Verum Serum blasts the jurors who bought the frame-up explanation:

Is there anyone except the 12 morons who were on the original jury that is surprised by this revelation? Speaking of which, can someone please track down those idiots and ask them how they could be so stupid and still be ambulatory.

I mean, really. People who couldn’t add up the evidence in this case should not be allowed to drive a car. Or own a lawnmower. Too much risk of them hurting themselves or others.

Believe me, the 12 jurors aren’t going to be the only people eating their words, if this is indeed true.  The trial exacerbated racial tensions, part of a deliberate strategy by the defense, in order to provide an ersatz rationale for the argument that the LAPD framed a popular entertainer for a brutal murder.  In the sixteen years since the trial, a vocal cohort of people continue to insist that Simpson was innocent despite all evidence to the contrary.

Simpson’s idea of a self-defense argument is laughable on its face, again assuming this report is accurate:

‘I went over there to give her a piece of my mind,’ he was quoted as saying.

When he arrived and no one answered at the house, he started pounding the door and shouting, according to the report.

The door allegedly then swung open and Nicole was standing there with a kitchen knife in her hand.

‘O.J. told the producer, “she was yelling go away! Go away! And waving the knife around at me. At one point she was lunging at me with the knife and I was just trying to talk to her. Nicole stepped out of the apartment – slashing the knife in the air.

‘”I was in such a rage that something just snapped. I couldn’t take her constant taunting of me with other men or her using drugs and drinking while my kids were living with her. I went beserk.

‘”Before I knew what I was doing I took the knife away from Nicole and started slashing at her. I cut her over and over again until she was lifeless. I was shocked at my own anger – I had killed the woman I had loved for so long..”‘

As anyone with any training at all in self-defense law can tell you, the protection of the law ends when the threat does.  Even assuming that this version of events is true (after sixteen years of honing a story to fit the evidence), once the knife was out of Nicole’s hands, there is no case for self-defense — and that doesn’t even begin to address the issue of Ron Goldman, who was there by chance.  Furthermore, given Simpson’s history of violence against Nicole, she had a good reason to arm herself in self-defense, at her own home when Simpson arrived late at night with no notice at all.  And even more to the point, self-defense attacks don’t involve dozens of stab wounds and a near-decapitation, as Nicole suffered at the hands of her murderer.

Besides, the first act in self-defense is retreat — an option Simpson never chose, if indeed he didn’t go to the house with murder on his mind in the first place.  Southern California isn’t exactly an area where gloves are de rigueur fashion, especially in June when the murders took place (the low temperature for June 12, 1994 in LA was 59 degrees).  What part of “giving her a piece of my mind” involved putting on leather gloves?

Don’t expect those invested in Simpson’s professed innocence to apologize for their participation in race-baiting on his behalf, even if Simpson actually does confess to the murders, a guilt that practically everyone who actually reviewed the evidence with any intelligence assigned to Simpson from the beginning.  The only people who argued otherwise did so for their own purposes, not from a sense of justice for the victims of the crime — and the families that have had to live with the cruelty of both the deaths and the public reaction to them.

GrannyDee on June 23, 2011 at 12:03 PM

I was an airline captain at the time of the verdict. I was on a layover with four flight attendants, three black and one white standing at the hotel desk checking out. When the “Not guilty” verdict was announced the three black ladies screamed with glee and danced around the lobby of the hotel while the other lady and myself were in a state of shock. The verdict had NOTHING to do with the murders. It was a racial vindication that a black man could kill two white people and get away with it if the jury was black. It’s called jury nullification and it’s happened many times throughout history. It doesn’t make it any less disgusting but it is a fact. The facts and evidence were so overwhelming against Simpson that it still boggles my mind that anyone, on the jury or not, could believe that he was innocent.

inspectorudy on June 23, 2011 at 12:09 PM

I remember my middle school class of all races reacting with delight, laughter and applause, when Simpson was declared not guilty. I was dumbfounded as I had followed the trial and knew about the mountain of evidence against him.

This is an aside, but a few months ago I met a man whose family was directly involved in the Emmett Till case. He told me a story about Till’s death that is at odds with the official version of events. If, and it’s a BIG IF, he told me the truth, Till’s death was not exactly what we have been led to believe. I still believe the official story, but it was a fascinating conversation nonetheless. I got the impression he has spent his life in the throes of an obsession that began in 1955.

inspectorudy on June 23, 2011 at 12:09 PM

They didn’t believe he was innocent, they just refused to process the facts of the case. They went into this jury duty with a pre-determined outcome. Again, there was no way that particular jury was going to convict OJ, even if they had been at the murder scene watching him butcher those people with their own eyes.

karenhasfreedom on June 23, 2011 at 12:20 PM

As for that double jeopardy…no he can’t be retried, but I’m wondering. I’m no lawyer, but wouldn’t perjury apply here? If he confesses publicly, it means he lied in a court of law. It doesn’t mean much, but add a few more years of prison time for perjury wouldn’t hurt society any.

capejasmine on June 23, 2011 at 11:34 AM

No perjury because he didn’t testify, he did not take the stand.

mbs on June 23, 2011 at 12:25 PM

Besides, the first act in self-defense is retreat

No, no, no! That is the lefty view and this horrible restriction of an obligation to retreat was in most state’s statutes. The 2A movement has worked very hard over the last decade passing “Castle Doctrine” laws nationwide which typically specifically remove any obligation to retreat from the aggressor in a self-defense situation. The states with the strongest protection for citizens who are defending themselves extend that “no obligation to retreat” to any place the citizen is legally, with the being someplace legally caveat to prevent say a burglar from being able to claim his aggression as self-defense while illegally in your house. I’m rather surprised and disappointed to see this author write the above quote.

Valiant on June 23, 2011 at 12:34 PM

DOH! I’ve been having browser issues posting on HotAir this morning and I had to rewrite the above twice and omitted this:

Retreat may be the appropriate first act in self-defense, but action always beats reaction and often survival, especially if accessing a concealed weapon when confronted by an armed criminal, requires immediate aggressive reaction against the criminal to stop the threat. Something recognized by the no obligation to retreat shift in most states.

deepdiver on June 23, 2011 at 12:37 PM

Silly Rabbits!

You actually think the folks cheering the not guilty verdict thought him to be innocent?

I lived in Flatbush, Brooklyn at the time. They KNEW he was guilty. The chat on the stoops in my apartment complex was just like the talk nationwide going on by his other supporters.

O.J killed a man who was messing around with his white wife. Goldman, it was reported, was driving around town in an expensive car that O.J. gave his wife. He was rubbing it in O.J.’s face . Basically he was saying “I’m screwing your wife and driving the car you gave her”

He snapped and everyone knew it.

Folks in Flatbush (and I contend nationwide as well) who supported him thought the murders were “justice” and deserved. They knew 100% he was guilty and saw it as payback that he was acquitted.

IlonaE on June 23, 2011 at 11:58 AM

Even Robert Shapiro held a press conference near the end of the trial or after the verdict, forget which, where he bitterly complained that the defense had played the race card from the “bottom of the deck”. And he was one of OJ’s original attorneys. Half way through the trial, he no longer sat at the defense table, but in the row right behind the table. I think he had a huge falling out with Cochran during the defense portion of the trial. Shapiro was still approaching this as a real criminal trial. Cochran knew all along he just had to open up enough of a crack to allow the jury to nullify the verdict because of the racial overtones of the crime and the trial.

I firmly believe Cochran knew from the very beginning he would win this case. I don’t think they had to payoff the jury. The jury was star struck. They were more than happy to co-operate with the planned outcome.

karenhasfreedom on June 23, 2011 at 12:50 PM

Excellent piece, Ed.

In the sixteen years since the trial, a vocal cohort of people continue to insist that Simpson was innocent despite all evidence to the contrary.

Most of these same people know OJ is guilty. I read an interesting theory once that I thought made sense: they defended him not because of his innocence but because they felt that a black man getting away with a murder he did commit somehow balances out the black men who were found guilty of murders they did not commit. A sick, warped idea of justice. They cared nothing for the two innocent victims, they cared only for their race.

Of course there are some who maybe really believed in him because he was their sports-hero. I remember the day he was acquitted. I was at the mall and a knot of people had gathered outside an electronics store to watch on tv. There were shouts of celebration (from whites) when the verdict was read.

On another note: is anyone else sickened that Oprah is allegedly exploiting Nicole and Ron for ratings? I’m sure the Brown and Goldman families will be relieved that OJ has finally confessed, but that Oprah allegedly wants this not for the victims’ sake, but for her network is beyond the pale.

Where, pray tell, does the knit cap & blood soaked shriveled leather gloves fit with this supposedly well honed self defense story?

heroyalwhyness on June 23, 2011 at 6:23 PM

Hey Deepdiver, throttle back. Ed wasn’t quoting case law, he wasn’t citing precedent, he wasn’t analyzing conditional jurisprudence regarding the actions.

He was stating the normal behavior of a reasonable person by saying that, when threatened, the first reaction of self-defense is retreat.

I have had the misfortune of having a gun pointed at me, in a location and a position where I had no opportunity to retreat, and believe me I would have gladly retreated rather than take any risk. But at a certain point the near guarantee that the trigger was going to be pulled, outweighed any risk involved, and I attacked. Now, to make the analogy to O.J.’s claim of self-defense, I could have emptied the gun into the assailant once it was in my possession and claimed self-defense, right? And I would likely still be in prison to this day. No, the only reasonable defense at that point would be temporary insanity, that I lost my mind over having been so frightened and responded in rage. OJ makes a claim similar to this, while saying self-defense. It’s bogus.

From the moment the story began, his words, his behavior, and his actions have been in direct opposition to the concept that he was not guilty. The side-show act of having the glove not fit was a shameful display, and should have been laughed at by the judge and jury.

Freelancer on June 23, 2011 at 6:34 PM

I read an interesting theory once that I thought made sense: they defended him not because of his innocence but because they felt that a black man getting away with a murder he did commit somehow balances out the black men who were found guilty of murders they did not commit. A sick, warped idea of justice. They cared nothing for the two innocent victims, they cared only for their race.

Aslans Girl on June 23, 2011 at 5:43 PM

I had the same experience as most of the commentators seem to. A room full of different races watching the verdict and the same reactions, except for one African American surgeon who did not applaud, and I speculate that he saw through what this would do to race relations. I don’t want to believe your theory but I have heard that before. I would like to know why.

I don’t fully blame the jury, because as I recall the defense lost their star prosecutor shortly before trial and there were a series of missteps including letting him try on the glove.

If I also remember correctly, LA was still reeling from the Rodney King trial, Reginald Denny trial, and increased tensions between races. Into this mix and the inflammatory suggestions from the defense team, a pool of a few jurors had the prospects of causing another riot hanging over their heads.

But I hoped this story was true. What I saw in the room, with the cheering when the OJ verdict was read sickened me.

I wonder if Woopie thinks this is murder-murder.

Is there anyone except the 12 morons who were on the original jury that is surprised by this revelation?

Not fair, if you ask me. Cochran spent the entire trial attempting to confuse the jury. Anyone who’d been subjected to it could have voted not guilty on the basis of reasonable doubt.

The feelings attributed to those who reacted to the verdict described in many comments in this thread are probably correct. As far as the jury’s being confused or not, I’m not so sure. In my opinion, the prosecution presented its case very badly, and it seemed as if the police and crime labs contributed their share of flubs.

Looks line Oprah’s people are denying that any confessing was heard.

Excuse me if this has already been posted.

Besides, the first act in self-defense is retreat

No way in hell I’m gonna retreat if someone breaks into my house and there’s a glock in my hand.

Much like Capone got done in with tax evasion. Justice will catch up with criminals eventually.

Global warming affected OJ’s mind. Innocent by reason of being too hot. – Al Gore

It’s all Sarah Palin’s fault. She created an atmosphere of violence. – MSM

Tired of OJ already. He should be thrown in the hole and disappear.

I raised an eyebrow for a moment, shook my head, sat down and went back to work. Right then I knew we were on a long decline and that I was living in Bizarro World.

Did you ever have the opportunity to laugh out loud at the apparently retarded black guys you work with?

Jaibones on June 24, 2011 at 11:27 AM

I’m really disappointed that hotair would report on RUMORS like this. I don’t see this happening and you guys really jumped the gun. Did Michelle sell you to the Enquirer?

All the jurors were Democraps. Just sayin!

I know whites who are as biased for The One as that jury was for OJ.

I think you people that are upset need to step back and examine yourselves. How is it Ted Kennedy got reelected repeatedly after murdering Mary Jo? He even made a Primary run at Carter in 1979. We even had republicans showing great respect for Kennedy. Why aren’t you equally repulsed by him? They even called him the Liberal Lion of the Senate… PLEASE. Can someone clarify for me?

Kjeil on June 23, 2011 at 6:48 PM

Ted Kennedy receives plenty of scorn and revulsion on HA. This thread isn’t about him, it’s about the vile O.J. Simpson.

My thanks to some of the commenters here for inspiring me to whip up an article I’ve wanted to write for quite a while.

Fine, but your intruder/Glock scenario is no analogy for what happened in Brentwood. You go to someone’s house, expecting to talk to them with no thought of violence, and they come at you with a knife. First reaction is normally retreat.
