The obligatory Man Robs Bank for Healthcare story
posted at 4:01 pm on June 21, 2011 by Jazz Shaw
ABC News will draw all manner of conclusions from this one, but they might differ from yours. Richard Verone, suffering from numerous medical ailments and without a job, concocted an unusual way to obtain free health care. He robbed a bank.
A 59-year-old man has been jailed in Gastonia, N.C., on charges of larceny after allegedly robbing an RBC Bank for $1 so he could get health care in prison. Richard James Verone handed a female teller a note demanding the money and claiming that he had a gun, according to the police report.
He then sat down and waited for police to arrive. “… I say, ‘I’ll be sitting right over here, on the chair, waiting for the police,’” Verone told reporters, recalling the June 9 robbery in an interview from Gaston County Jail.
Verone robbed the bank of one dollar. When police arrested him he was unarmed. He claimed he chose the small amount of funds to prove that his needs were “medical, not financial.” (I thought the two were fairly well entwined?)
Winning comment from the suspect:
“I’m sort of a logical person and that was my logic, what I came up with,” Verone told reporters. “If it is called manipulation, then out of necessity because I need medical care, then I guess I am manipulating the courts to get medical care.”
Sadly, his plan failed in one key regard. Due the lack of weapons and the small amount of cash, he was charged with larceny rather than some major, felony bank robbery rap. Because of that, he’ll only get up to 12 months in the local jail, not a long stretch in federal prison, so his medical options will likely not be the same.
Creative thinking, though. Only in America.

Obama will have over to the WH in 3, 2, 1…perfect prop, better than throwing grandma over the cliff…
Waterfall-Schultz will make platinum out of this, along with Pelosi/Reid.
The poor sap may be mentally ill. They are an impertinent despicable lot. Despise them with all your fibers.

Wasn’t there a movie about this very scenario?

Man, I was thinking the same thing. He is a dead ringer.
Aggie85 on June 21, 2011 at 4:08 PM
He should have dreamed bigger and ran for Congress instead. Not only do those a**holes rob Americans of significnatly more money, but they get pretty sweet health care packages to boot.

You mean he didn’t get one of those 2.1 million jobs Barry created???

Also, good lord, apparently the health care he needs is for psoriasis. Steal some vitamin E moisturizer next time.

If a man steals a loaf of bread to feed himself is that wrong? Or if the same man steals a loaf of bread to feed his family, is that wrong? How about that same man being gluten intolerant, thus steals a nice Porterhouse steak instead of bread to feed himself, is that wrong? What if he prefers a nice lobster tail to go with that steak?
Anyway, he robbed a bank for a pittance and is heading for the county lockup, if he is convicted, instead of a longer term state or fed prison. He, being a self-proclaimed logical man, certainly did not apply basic logic to his plan.
His next gig? A paid spokesman for Obamacare?

One piece of information I linked to in the Headlines comment thread:
“He’d then be able to collect social security when he got out, and says he’d head for the beach.
“I’ve already looked at a condominium. I’ve spoken to a realtor, on Myrtle Beach,” he said.”

There was a comic strip I’d read back when I read the newspaper. It was about this guy who was a real shyster, who had a girlfriend who cooked meals for him. Now, mind you, those meals consisted of boiled octopus.
But it was FREE boiled octopus! This guy kinda reminds me of that boiled octopus guy

So, move to Cuba if their free healthcare is so great. Then he can star in Sicko II: Electric Boogaloo.

give up your freedom for a chance at sub-standard health care… sums up Obamacare…

Health care in a prison system is not what he thinks it is. It’s not like he can just mosey on down a doctor’s office and start telling them his aches and pains and they take care of him.
The reality usually goes the way of complaining to a guard for a couple of days, begging a nurse to really believe that you’re sick or in pain for a particular ailment and then crossing your fingers, saying a prayer and hoping they’ll allow you to go to a hospital for further care.
There’s been cases of broken limbs having to be reset because they already started healing prior to finally getting to a hospital for treatment.
Health care in the prison system is nothing to look forward to or aspire towards.

Entitled mentality worsens your character thus making you a worse person than before. There is a political Party dedicated to this end in exchange for their own power (your vote).
The exchange must only grow for the relationship to exist. It is that simple.

He’s from the city I was born in(Gastonia) and my grandparents lived in the same neighborhood as his family. He worked 17 years for Coca Cola and got laid off a few years ago. Sad story.

Um, did he not realize he can walk into any ER and get treated, or, go to an affordable Doc in the Box?

I have a feeling we’ll be hearing about this guy again…I’d say in about 12 months, give or take.

I wouldn’t think the charge would be lesser
Even if you fake having a weapon I thought the charge would be the same

He must need a brain transplant. Why didn’t he try to steal enough money to pay for his health care needs? He probably would have got caught and achieved his goal. If he gets away with it, he’s ok too!
cartooner on June 21, 2011 at 4:40 PM
Hmm. He robbed a bank to pay for his rosacia treatment and all he ends up getting is a nightly prostate exam.
motionview on June 21, 2011 at 4:40 PM
A sad tale, to be sure.
I think it’s simply Emilio Estevez researching his next movie role.
locomotivebreath1901 on June 21, 2011 at 4:43 PM
When all is said and done; Richard James Verone is not the face I want to see when I think of America. Sadly the MSM and the ObamaCare zombies will hold onto this guy as a national here, speaking for the abused everyman. This guy is an even bigger idiot than most realize. Under ObamaCare he would be denied medical treatment for a whole host of reasons.
P.S. The phrases MSM and ObamaCare are no longer flagged my computers spellchecker.

Would he qualify for free or reduced healthcare in Greece?
ExpressoBold on June 21, 2011 at 4:46 PM
RBC = Royal Bank of Canada.
Interesting that he robbed from a bank that is from a country that does provide socialized health care.

This smells fishy.

That they do. But, at least the whores are honest about it.
Vyce on June 21, 2011 at 4:53 PM
I find something a bit interesting about this story. He says he suffers from a bad back, a sore foot, and an undiagnosed growth on his chest…and after being laid off he decided this was his best course to get medical help. Most employers have some sort of health insurance option…why did he not take advantage of that long before being laid off? Even if his employer did not offer any sort of insurance surely it must have been easier to come up with at least some money to see a doctor…I mean c’mon…if I have an unknown growth on my chest…even though I have no insurance right now, I can make a call to my doctor and get an appointment and have it looked at for a reasonable cost. Just seems a little too convenient here for some reason…
BadMojo on June 21, 2011 at 4:57 PM
On the plus side, it should still be a felony so he most likely will not be able to vote in 2012 :) (At least not by using his own name.)
It makes you wonder if that is what the New Black Panethers were up to. He just wanted free healthcare and cable. Then Holder denied him that! Holder must be racist…
jeffn21 on June 21, 2011 at 5:11 PM
Yeah. Most docs take payment plans and will offer reduced fees if you’re really in trouble.
At any rate, this is a sad case. I guess the “three hots and a cot” is still appealing to some folks. Welcome to Obama’s America.

C’mon people – I cal BS on this story – someone sent me a link to it from Yahoo, and it included this paragraph: “The Affordable Care Act, President Obama’s health-care overhaul passed by Congress last year, was designed to make it easier for Americans in situations like Verone’s to get health insurance. But most of its provisions don’t go into effect until 2014.”
Really?

This guy will become an international superstar and symbol of how “horrible” the US healthcare system is. I can see the Guardian article now…

Oh wonderful. This moron robs a bank for $1 and now we have to keep him at county for perhaps a year costing the local community about 100k.

Bad news: He developed rectal cancer from repeated sex abuse.

Stole a dollar to get thrown in prison for the free healthcare, but didn’t consider that he needed to cross the felony threshold?
Sounds like just another dumb criminal. That, or all he wanted was the headline.
tom on June 21, 2011 at 8:36 PM
Yep.
He told the teller that he was armed. True or not, he should have been charged with attempted armed robbery.

I think the guy would already qualify for healthcare. All he had to do was walk into the welfare office.
JellyToast on June 21, 2011 at 10:11 PM
Stole my post. Mr.Logic apparently didn’t do his homework about what kind of romance goes on behind bars. There’s a reason the Red Cross won’t take your blood if you’ve been in lockup for any real length of time.
Uncle Sams Nephew on June 21, 2011 at 10:30 PM
I guess getting a job was out of the question.
It would interesting to see what bad choices led this man down this path. I am sure there were many, but the media won’t give them to us.

I’m betting he’s been in the big house before. And you’re right, we won’t hear about it.
