Newt makes big fundraising news
posted at 2:40 pm on June 21, 2011 by Jazz Shaw
Clearly, fundraising is one of the key hurdles for any presidential campaign to manage. It takes a lot of money to run for president these days, and there’s no denying it. That’s why Mitt made such a splash with his huge totals earlier this month. Well, another presidential hopeful is in the news for fundraising this week, and it’s Newt Gingrich. Sadly for the former Speaker of the House, I don’t think it was precisely the headline he was looking for.
APNewsBreak: Gingrich campaign finance team quits
ATLANTA — The top fundraisers for Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign have abandoned his struggling bid amid anemic fundraising and heavy spending.
Campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond is confirming to The Associated Press that fundraising director Jody Thomas and fundraising consultant Mary Heitman have left the team.
The former House speaker’s campaign has been on life support since earlier this month when 16 top aides and advisers resigned en masse over disagreements with the Republican candidate.
People familiar with Gingrich’s campaign spending say his fundraising has been weak since he launched his bid and that he has racked up large travel bills. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk openly about campaign inner workings.
I’m guessing Newt will bravely push on, and possibly even do a third re-launch and re-branding of his campaign this coming weekend. The only question left is, who is still on the team besides his wife and his travel agent?
This is quickly going down in history as one of the strangest presidential bids – at least among high profile names who would be taken seriously – of all time. I’ll admit, the strategy of going for the Greek Islands vote early was the type of genius you don’t normally see in run of the mill politicians, but shedding your fundraisers is taking it to an entirely new, Jedi mind trick level of stratergy.

Well, it is a non-traditional approach, one must agree.

Knucklehead on June 21, 2011 at 2:46 PM
Obama campaigned in Germany, and that seemed to work…
Without fundraisers, Ging-rich becomes Ging-poor.
Maybe, like Newt’s former campaign aides, the eyes of Texas are on his fundraisers. Pssst–when will Rick run?
Steve Z on June 21, 2011 at 2:48 PM
Criticizing the the Ryan plan ended his campaign before it began. However, where is the candidate going totally gungho for the plan?
cpaulus on June 21, 2011 at 2:49 PM
Was Newt’s run ever anything more than a vanity run? The guy hasn’t been relavent in politics for over a decade. He has good ideas but at this point in his life he’ll never be anything more than a think tank guy.
rmel80 on June 21, 2011 at 2:49 PM
Good Grief if he doesn’t get the message now he never will.

Go away, go away, go away…

Why do I somehow suspect Callista may have been involved? Hang it up Newt. No one is going to vote for you let alone give you money.

Let’s face it, Gingrich has been a dead man walking since the MTP interview during which he disparaged Ryan’s plan and hurt all GOP candidates running for office in 2012. Thanks, Newt.
It’s time now for someone to sit Newt’s campaign down in Old Sparky and throw the switch.

Newt will back Cain as a fellow Georgian. Calista will be so angry about the whole thing that she will not vote in the GOP primary. That’s about it.
BuckeyeSam on June 21, 2011 at 3:00 PM
So what’s his back-up plan, opening up a lemonade stand?

Newt Gingrich is considered a SERIOUS CANDIDATE by the establishment.

He just needs Callista to write a letter to potential donors demanding they send her money… it works on Newt.

Everyone wants to know “Who will Newt endorse?”

Hey, maybe Newt can invoke his well known Southern charms in the general direction of that rich old lady with the weird name who was throwing money on scumbag deluxe John Edwards like it was his own private ticker tape parade!

What Newt doesn’t understand is that loyalty is a two way street. If he expects his team to be loyal to him, he has to be loyal to his followers. No one wants to work for a guy who will change his mind due to tactical considerations 6 months from now.
Just look at it from their point of view. They signed up because they believe in Newt’s message. Well, Newt changed his message any number of times, so why put in the work and sweat when you have no idea what you are working for? Is Newt a conservative? A Rino? A moderate? A fighter? A compromiser? A conservative Democrat? Who knows? “Just stick around and he’ll tell you went it’s important for you to know” is not a winning strategy, personnel wise. It might be look good on paper, but you don’t grow a group of dedicated followers doing things like that.

What else does he have to loose…?

This meltdown is almost as epic as the one still going on in the QOTD thread from last night.
Seriously.

I want to personally thank Newt for replacing one of my heroes, Rudy Guiliani, as the GOP presidential hopeful who ran the worst campaign possible for the nomination.
Vyce on June 21, 2011 at 3:18 PM
I can’t wait to see Gingrich on Hannity trying to explain this.
BuckeyeSam on June 21, 2011 at 3:30 PM
Seriously, Newt’s campaign failure???
How about a lack of support?
Roy Rogers on June 21, 2011 at 3:39 PM
I want to know why ! I have never seen anything like this. There is a reason, they all signed on in the beginning. Why are they sinking this ship with abandonment? Is there a ticking bomb in the ship they have discovered? I would not vote for Newt but this mutiny of his campaign is very unusual. WHY?
IowaWoman on June 21, 2011 at 3:39 PM
I agree with the commenter who said this is a vanity run and I’ll add that it was also intended to help him sell more books.
The MTP interview was his arrogance in display for all to see. The backpeddling after was the real low point.
CCRWM on June 21, 2011 at 3:40 PM
Newt is just a political whore trying to enhance his book sales and his speaking fees. Those foolish enough to be on his team have awaken to this fact and know he cares only about Newt.
I love the fact that he’s gone about it so poorly however, that he has hurt his “brand” so much that it’s actually going to have cost him the money he so much craved.
TiminPhx on June 21, 2011 at 3:46 PM
Thomas and Heitman, according to my sources, got a call from Callista. She was screaming at the top of her lungs,” What do you mean there’s not enough money for a campaign stop in Paris?!!”

Newt is certainly an egotist, but he’s also smart enough to know he never really had a chance at the nomination and isn’t going to be on the nominee’s list for Veep, either. He’s running to keep his image before the media and the public, getting free publicity and increased weight for his opinions by being seen debating the Presidential candidates onstage. Also, as a candidate, donors can pay all his travel costs around the country without him having to declare it as income.
This all is designed to increase book sales and perhaps strengthen his negotiating position when contracting to be a paid analyst. Newt knew this all the time. I expect he shared this with Callista. The problem is that he couldn’t tell his staff, fundraisers, and volunteers that they are working for a sham campaign meant only to pump up his market value.
But such things become obvious after a while, and as they realize they are being used not to promote solutions they may believe in, but instead Newt’s personal pocketbook, they wise up and jump ship.
Now it is up to the idiots who put on these phony “debates” to keep him off the stage. He’s not a serious candidate, and is only trying to do what Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton always did in the Democratic Primaries: make a few bucks, now and in the future.
Adjoran on June 21, 2011 at 4:39 PM
Hasn’t MSNBC been saying that Newt does this only to sell books while The Donald and The Alaskan have their own devious reasons?
The keep going back to the money to be made. Even applied it to TPaw.
