Video: The Vancouver hockey riot

posted at 7:30 pm on June 16, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via Verum Serum and Real Radio. Like you, my first reaction when I heard about it was “Canadians don’t riot!” My second reaction, after googling for four seconds, was “Oh wait, they do. Really predictably, too.”

A woman told CNN in the aftermath, “It’s totally unlike Vancouver.” Hey lady — guess what?

The 2011 Stanley Cup riot will be remembered as much worse than the 1994 riot, the man who investigated the 1994 riot says.

“This was worse than 1994 in terms of the violence, the fires, the hooliganism, the vandalism and the sheer outright defiance of law, seeing the police pelted,” said Bob Whitelaw, who wrote an analysis and more than 100 recommendations for British Columbia’s attorney-general and the British Columbia Police Commission after the 1994 riot.

“I am astounded and professionally very upset,” Whitelaw said. “Some of my findings were not adhered to last night, principally, the parked cars in the downtown area, when trouble began those cars were damaged, and they didn’t disperse the crowds quickly enough, or have enough exits going before the cover of dark.”

Earlier this month, Whitelaw told The Sun in an interview that he was concerned about a repeat of the 1994 riot

He says the riot would’ve likely happened whether the Canucks won or lost.

Whitelaw speculates that the troublemakers came from “outside Vancouver”; Vancouver cops are also pushing the theory that “anarchists and criminals” are to blame rather than drunk, deflated ‘Nucks fans. The “anarchists” seem to have come prepared, judging by the number wearing Vancouver jerseys in the vids. It’s also strange that these mysterious outsiders would turn up for a post-game riot in Vancouver but not in Boston, eh? Four clips for you here, the last of which is the most harrowing; watch as a poor shop owner gets jumped at around three minutes in. Two good things did come out of the riots, though. One is this instantly iconic photograph (“love among the ruins”) and the other is Ann Coulter’s take via Matt Lewis. Is it really “only” a six-month wait?

IIRC Mark Steyn has memories of Vancouver

Nothing like a Human Rights Commission trial to make not so fond memories. BTW Steyn had better lawyers. He still left Canada

Violence, even in self-defense, never solves anything and the death penalty is no deterrence.

I think I would sit in my store with a 12 gauge. If several did this, and several were shot, this would not happen again.
They do it because their are no repercussions, and few are punished.
In a riot situation, I feel a property owner has every right to protect his property…anyone “there” are hoodlums. Decent people are home behind their doors.

right2bright on June 17, 2011 at 8:47 AM

It didn’t matter to those nuts-they would have rioted win or lose. Just an excuse to steal and cause trouble.

MaiDee on June 17, 2011 at 8:50 AM

You know where nothing remotely like this did not happen recently under the same pretext (city’s professional sports team winning a championship)?

Dallas Texas.

Coincidence or correlation on how much the respective citizens seem to emulate the European culture?

Boston is a liberal town, and there was no rioting after the B’s won. Of course, all the college kids had left for summer break too.

Little Boomer on June 17, 2011 at 9:05 AM

Vancouver is reaping what the’ve sown. They decided to have open Heroin “clinics” and ease up on all the left wing loonies. It’s a beautiful city but I won’t go there. So now they have all these “free spirits” there who love the “hands off” approach to drugs and this violence doesn’t surprise me.
What people fail to realize is legalizing drug use doesn’t remove the necessity for the addicts to have MONEY. When they don’t have jobs – usually because of their lifestyle – they turn to crime to get the money. That leads to violence on a larger scale.

So I don’t understand why Vancouver was unprepared for this violence.

You have no clue. Come back when you understand why no riots in Boston. Has nothing to do with liberal or conservatine or college students.

“anarchists and criminals” are to blame

Yeah right, because real anarchists are huge hockey fans and wear the team jersey to the riots.

Massive pathetic police fail.

There were black hooded guys dressed for rioting throughout the crowd.
After the G20 bullsh*t in Toronto you would think they would learn.

Yeah, all those 16-25 year old males with 200 dollar Canucks jerseys running out of Sears with armloads of sh*t are drug addicts.

You’re enormously stupid.

Yeah, because every drunk Canucks Jerseyed rioter is a liberal.

Stay stupid.

Dave Rywall on June 17, 2011 at 11:18 AM

In a recent “Uncommon Knowledge”, Thomas Sowell made the point that in the 60′s, cities in which the mayor tried to plead with the rioters and appeal to their “better natures” had the worst riots because everyone knew that there would be no serious consequences to bad behavior, but cities in which the mayor threaten to “shoot to kill” their riots, quickly saw the level of violence dissapate.

I think I can predict the response of the Vancouver government based on those videos.

PackerBronco on June 17, 2011 at 11:21 AM

Dave Rywall – You clearly missed the point. When you decide it’s an open society you end up with a lot of idiots who figure – hell GO FOR IT – I’ve got nothing to lose. I didn’t infer that they were all drug addicts.

And BTW – I know my IQ. Quite confident it’s higher than yours.

That has absolutely nothing to do with it. If it were that easy. Is that why the riots in LA happened? No, it had more to do with a culture that has been steadily going down the toilet for the past 40 years.

These people have no sense of shame, no personal responsibility, no understanding of anything beyond themselves. This is the result of a culture of easy and whorish fame and attention seeking.

I wish it were as easy as drug addicts. They were probably off doing what they normally do elsewhere – ripping of cars and B&Es – with even more relative ease as the police were occupied downtown.

But you stick with druggies if it makes you feel better. I’ll stick with mine above.

Hello – Kim – it’s a whole culture and we seem to actually be on the same page. When you are given the mantra that what you want is what you should have from Kindergarten on -violence and acting out is no giant step up.
Flash mob situation in the USA are on the increase. Not just in the crime ridden inner cities – everywhere. And as more of the Trophy generations are finding they are not employable and their parents can’t keep them on the proverbial t*t for the entire life – they get a little cranky. It’s tough to be WEANED when you in your 20′s.

ITA. Being a very strong conservative here is often trying and a lot of socialists don’t understand that their touchy feely ways have brought us to this stage, but it’s not a surprise as personal responsibility and reflection is not a liberal strong suit.

There were instigators who came to start a riot and brought their gear. They brought their gasoline and wore Canucks shirts to fit in.

The ones that disturb me and reinforce that the future is lost in many ways are the lookie loos. The ones who stand around, take pics and cheer and then steal and loot because “everyone else is doing it” or “I look cool take a pic”.

You’d be surprised at the number of people here that think the police were too nice. Conservatism is growing in Canada, but it’s going to take a while. Don’t give up on us and don’t think we all want nanny state socialism!

FYI
Metro Vancouver 2,300,000
Metro Boston…. 4,400,000
Boston CSA ….. 7,400,000
Vancouver CSA.. 2,300,000 – 4 goats – one greasy goalie and 4000 anarchists.

Wade on June 17, 2011 at 2:41 PM

Being a die hard Bruins fan for 20+ years I loved the game last night. Sure I’m from Canada, but in Nova Scotia, Boston is number one to a great many hockey fans here. Far more cheered on Boston than Vancouver that’s for sure.

George_Canada on June 16, 2011 at 9:25 PM

Is it still Eastern Canada (the “sophisticated,” sanctimonious, condescending snob-types ) vs. Western Canada (“hillbillies,” “unrefined,” etc.)?

Meaning, do Ontarians, et al, consider Vancouver part of “the west” like they do those from Alberta, Saskatchewan, etc.?

Then again, I once knew a guy from Ontario who said he always fills up with gas in Ontario before heading to see his relatives in Nova Scotia so he doesn’t have to stop in Quebec. :-)

Provincial rivalry… :-)
