Obama plays to half-empty house for grassroots fundraiser

posted at 2:45 pm on June 14, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama has had some success already in raising money for his 2012 re-election bid, at least when it comes to big-ticket donors and high-value fundraisers.  Yesterday, Obama tried his hand at harnessing the kind of grassroots passion that helped elevate him past Hillary Clinton in the 2008 primaries and roll to a historic victory over John McCain, becoming the first Democrat since Jimmy Carter to win a majority of the popular vote in victory.  As Politico notes, Obama was decidedly less successful with the mainstream than with the elite Democratic donors he’s been wooing lately:

A low-dollar fundraiser here Monday felt like a throwback to the 2008 campaign. … The one missing element? Overflowing crowds.

Granted, it was a fundraiser, not a free rally. But the empty seats were hard to miss.

The top level of the 2,200-seat concert hall at the Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts was entirely empty, as were the seats along the side of the second and third levels.

“The expectation was 900,” a Democratic official said, and more than 980 tickets were sold.

The unnamed Democratic official is grasping for spin in this case.  No one in politics would book a 2200-seat venue if they only expected 900 people to show, especially not for a Presidential appearance.  Campaigns want standing-room only crowds and wall-to-wall people for optics that reinforce the notion that the candidate remains wildly popular.  Had they expected 900 attendees (at $44 each to remind voters that Obama is the 44th President), they could have found a venue in Miami or its environs that would have properly framed that kind of attendance for the media.

For instance, a quick search turns up the New World Symphony center’s Performance Hall, which seats 756 people for banquets.  That would probably fit the remaining 140 or so people in theater seating formation.  South Beach has The Clevelander, which has a reception capacity of 1000 people.  The Awarehouse might be a little avant garde, but it still can get 800 people in for a reception, which would have cost $4400 in receipts but a lot less embarrassment.

The lack of enthusiasm seems especially revealing, coming as it does in Miami-Dade County.  Obama won this county handily in 2008 while taking Florida from the Republicans.  He beat McCain by 16 points in Miami-Dade, 58/42, with a margin of over 139,000 votes.  That was his largest margin among any of Florida’s counties, and yet now he can’t even fill a 2200-seat venue halfway after two and a half years as President.  That’s a clear signal that Obama won’t get anywhere near the kind of enthusiasm he inspired in 2008, and without that, he’s very vulnerable indeed.

Update: Actually, as noted in the comments by TimTebowSavesAmerica, I’m incorrect on one point. Broward actually had a wider margin of victory by vote totals for Obama, by over 243,000.

As pointed out by someone else on another blog…

This is why our economy is going in the tank. They rent a room that seats 2,200 people when they expect 900 to show up and are “unexpectedly surprised” that 980 showed up. This kind of math will bankrupt a company, a family, or a country in a flat hurry.

(Still, I was glad to see all of those empty seats, a truly great tribute to an empty suit.)

That was his largest margin among any of Florida’s counties, and yet now he can’t even fill a 2200-seat venue halfway after two and a half years as President.

How many of those votes were double-voting New Yorkers, who subsequently went underwater on their Miami Beach condos and walked away? They won’t be able to vote in Miami-Dade next year…

Thug in Chief lauds another thugette.

(CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama said yesterday that you would want Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D.-Fla.) “on your side” because “she’s got a cute smile,” and you would want her “in your foxhole” because “not only is she charming” but she has a “dazzling smile,” and is “tough as nails.”

Obama spoke of Wasserman Schultz, who also chairs the Democratic National Committee, at two separate fundraising events in Miami on Monday. Wasserman Schultz’s congressional district includes parts of Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

I’m reminded of the old truism in business… “A” employees recruit “A” employees while “B” employees recruit “C” employees.

DWS is Barry’s personal choice to replace Tim Kaine and she’s proving to be as adept at her job as Michael Steele was as RNC chair the past two years.

If she fails, which she certainly appears capable of doing, then not only does Obama lose but a number of Dems who haven’t headed for the door may be getting swept out as well.

“The expectation was 900,” a Democratic official said, and more than 980 tickets were sold.

Read 1984: all liberal “expectations” occur after the fact.

Obviously that’s false; Ed made a mistake. You can go to any 2008 voter database and find he got a bigger vote margin for sure in Broward. Dade and Palm Beach were almost the same, but then again Dade is much more diverse than Palm Beach or Broward.

The Obama’s won’t be using suitcases when they leave. Moochy will rent a front-end loader and they will be scooping every last thing from the White House into a fleet of dump trucks to be brought back to Chicago.

Their exit from the national stage will make Sherman’s March through the Shenandoah look like a small town parade.

His biggest margin by votes (not percentage) was Miami-Dade. He did better by percentage in other Florida counties, but not in actual votes. Since I was talking about attendance, that seemed to me to be the better context.

The top level of the 2,200-seat concert hall at the Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts was entirely empty, as were the seats along the side of the second and third levels.

Somebody told the Dems who were supposed to be in those seats that there were free weiners down the block.

Interesting. I wonder what LeBron thinks of that place.

LeBron? I hear his new phone only vibrates, because it has no rings either.

Maybe LeBron can help Obama get the arena to 75% full, but Obama will be on his own for that fourth quarter.

In fairness though, would you eat Taco Bell food even if they paid you to do so? *barf*

Bishop on June 14, 2011 at 2:58 PM

I kind of take exception to that. I worked at a Taco Bell for a while when I was in college. Granted, it isn’t ‘really’ Mexican cuisine. And, it was long ago before the more modern menu. But, aside form the fact that they did use lard in the refried beans and fry the shells in cocoanut oil, the component ingredients were basically all fresh. I had no problems with any of my family coming by and eating there. I still get a jones on for the food every now and then.

I have some funny Taco Bell stories. Working ’til 1 am for $1.65 and hour (minus 45 cents a shift for meals). Yeah, baby!
