Huckabee to Pawlenty: After last night, I’d fire some of my consultants if I were you

posted at 6:05 pm on June 14, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via the Laura Ingraham Show, skip ahead to 6:00 or so. Say what you will about him, but if Huck got a softball about RomneyCare last night like the one served up to T-Paw, he would have hit a line drive off of Mitt’s head. Said GOP consultant Alex Castellanos to Politico:

“Debates are competitions – they are alpha dog battles,” explained longtime GOP ad man Alex Castellanos. “To win one, you have to create what I call an ‘MOS,’ a moment of strength. Tim Pawlenty had a chance to get in the ring tonight with the heavyweight champion and create such a moment. He refused to enter the ring. It was like LeBron refusing to take the big shot [Sunday] night.”

Ed made the point earlier that it’s still early in the campaign, which is true of course from the perspective of the average voter. From the perspective of a major donor, though, whose cash is critical to attracting average voters down the road? Not so early after all. More from Romney fan David Frum, looking ahead:

Pawlenty’s failure is not the kind of stumble he can correct later. It goes to the core of the guy: offered the chance to confront Romney directly, he flinched. He did not look “nice.” He did not look like he was observing the 11th commandment. He looked uncertain and weak. He looked like a man fully aware that Romney would best him in a one-to-one discussion of healthcare policy…

After last night, Pawlenty’s fund-raising will sputter. He’s not exciting enough for ultra-base small donors. He does not look enough like a winner to mobilize big-dollar donors…

If [no one else gets in], I’d guess the future course of the race goes like this:

Bachmann wins Iowa. Romney wins New Hampshire. Absent Perry or Ryan, the field quickly empties out. The establishment rallies to Romney. The party follows just as it did in 1988, 1996 and 2000.

There’s a slim chance that Pawlenty could come back to win South Carolina in that scenario as some sort of compromise choice between centrists and social cons panicked at the thought of either Bachmann or Romney as nominee. But it’d be tough, and the double whammy of last night’s mistake is that the two people whom T-Paw most needed to perform badly both performed remarkably well by universal acclaim. He can come back from it, but at the next debate he’ll probably end up going over the top in attacking Romney to prove his “toughness, which will itself be dicey insofar as it risks making him look desperate.

Beyond that, Pawlenty has a basic strategic problem identified here by Ace in that he’s presenting himself as a clearly defined alternative to Romney and Obama rather than as the “not Romney” (and “not Obama”) in the race. That is to say, by proposing his own economic program early in the campaign and embracing the “truth-telling” gimmick on the stump (no ethanol subsidies for Iowa, etc), he’s framing the election as a choice between him and his competitors rather than as a referendum on Romney/RomneyCare and, ultimately, Obama. Which, considering that T-Paw’s big advantage is how bland and baggage-free he is, is exactly the opposite of what he’d like to be doing. The whole reason (well, much of the reason) that so many establishment Republicans are high on him is because he’s well positioned to keep the spotlight on Obama’s economic sins by blending into the background in the general. With the possible exception of John Thune, he’s as close to an ideal “not Obama” candidate as you can get. And yet his problem is that he’s so bland and baggage-free that he still hasn’t built the sort of name recognition or credibility with the base that he needs to threaten Romney, and given an easy opportunity to help himself in that regard that last night, he inexplicably passed. The last thing he should want to do, given his political strength as a cipher, is define himself, but because he can’t get traction in the polls, he’s been forced to do it via “truth-telling,” his economic plan, et al, which in turn gives Mitt and The One targets to shoot at. I don’t know how he resolves that dilemma of wanting to be “not Romney/Obama” and needing to be Tim Pawlenty, at least for the moment. Presumably, if/when he starts to move in the polls, he’ll shift to a mainly negative campaign against Mitt and then just stick with that for the duration. It’s his best shot, but if Perry gets in and goes on the attack against Mitt, thus becoming the chief “not Romney” in the race, how will T-Paw distinguish himself then?

He is, but bigger is the fact that he has a track record of persuading Dems & moderates to support his conservative policies, which is just what we need in Nov. ’12.

Pawlenty should have hired radio host Mark Davis. He played Romney’s response to a RomneyCare question, John King’s question to Pawlenty, and what he should have said. Yes it was confrontational and yes it was fierce. But it would have been headline news this morning. And it’s not like Pawlenty didn’t know it was coming.

(Along the lines of “Of all the people standing before this audience, there is one person who implemented health-care mandates …..and is now saying it’s wrong and they would immediately repeal it….but you DID it…..)

As much as I really do dislike Ed Rollins, he helped Huck and now he is a help to Bachman. He must be pretty good at what he does.

There were points at which I though Pawlenty did a great job. I didn’t see it toward the end, I was in and out and can’t really bring myself to watch a rerun, so I missed the part where Pawlenty didn’t atttack… but what would that prove anyway?

It’s not like everyone doesn’t know all about Romneycare anyway. And I think repeating Obama’s talking points is not the best idea in the world. I don’t trust Obama and someone who quotes him is not all that trustworthy either.

Helping Obama destroy Romney, or any of Obama’s other political objectives, hardly seems like a positive.

T-Paw’s candidacy is DONE.

He’s in single digits – and was complaining about name recognition. Well – he doesn’t have a helluva a lot of time to establish that name recognition and Mitt Romney’s supporters are naturally HIS supporters.

So he needed to jab. And … worse – he needed to prove he was a man by saying right to Mitten’s face what he’s been saying on the talk shows – and when T-Paw declined that opportunity – he looked small.

HondaV65 on June 14, 2011 at 6:34 PM

If Perry gets in its curtains for Pawlenty.

He should do well in the Southern primaries, and probably could win South Carolina. Texas is currently trying to change its primary date from March to April to save their full delegate slate of 171 delegates. If Perry is still in it for the Texas primary, he should win the lion’s share of those delegates and that might put him over the top.

RUDYJ on June 14, 2011 at 9:40 PM

Hey sheryl, I’m not talking about a debate. The dirty tricks and attack ads are what I’m thinking of. The campaign of 2008 was just a slight taste of what is to come from the Obama machine in 2012. If Romney is the nominee in 2012, then every possible lie about Mitt will be thrown against him, including Mitt’s racism./ sarcasm.

bigmike on June 14, 2011 at 10:01 PM

bigmike on June 14, 2011 at 10:01 PM

Mitt’s racism? Mitt is most certainly not racist, though I wouldn’t put it pass Obama/DNC to make up any crazy lie.

That’s why I don’t think Perry is a good candidate to run, he’s a huge target for that kind of thing.

Perry sort of personifies the MSM’s fallacious drumbeat meme that the Tea Party is mostly made up of white, southern regional, Christian conservatives and the DNC will exploit this visual.

Which means Obama wins because now he’s got the country talking about racism, religion, social issues etc instead of the economy and jobs.

Perry is not a Panacea and I’m not sure why he’s receiving that sort of treatment. His policies and very long record as Governor has a lot of stuff to mine, to vet, to poll nationally, etc.

You people on this site are so uninformed, it’s laughable. You make fun of Mike Huckabee, yet he was the person who was a co-leader with Romney before he withdrew from the race. That means lots of people like him.

For all of you Palin fans, if it wasn’t for Huckabee withdrawing from the race, Palin wouldn’t even be out of single digits in any poll. So you better hope Huckabee doesn’t decide to get back in because you could kiss Palin’s chances goodbye.

For all of you to make fun of Mike Huckabee just shows how ignorant you are with the rest of the country and who THEY like. You are the pathetic people, NOT Mike Huckabee. He was trying to help Pawlenty, but, of course, don’t let a good thing Huckabee did get past you people who ONLY know how to put somebody down. Obviously, none of you Hot Air commenters know anything about how the rest of the country thinks. You are the ignorant people, and YOU ALL should go home, not Mike Huckabee. You aren’t even worthy to discuss him obviously because all of you are so PETTY. Disgusting is what you are!!!

Hey VFT, So you really love Huckabee! I never would’ve thought that in a million years. Romney is the establishment candidate, by that, I mean, he’s got the support of the GOP machine, and the political class. Pawlenty is the “reserve” candidate, in case Mitt nosedives, but Pawlenty is still an establishment candidate. Huck really doesn’t like Romney since 2008. There is a really good reason why Huck declined to run, can you guess what it is?

Well, you sound like a reasonable chap. Would you consider commenting more often?

With his advice and his experience you, too, can lose an election.

Bigmike,

Romney had NOTHING to do with Huckabee not running. At the time Huckabee decided to not run, he was on top of the polls and because Romney had that horrible healthcare speech that all the pundits hated, Huckabee would have had a clear shot at the nomination. Romney would have gone downhill, BUT because Huckabee got out of the race and there were only two frontrunners, Romney and Huckabee, people in the polls are now voting for Romney because they believe he is the only person to beat Obama. Huckabee handed that nomination to Romney. Huckabee also stated that they have mended their fences and he would support Romney or any other Republican who won the Republican nomination.

To hear all of you talk, you think Huckabee was not a good candidate. You are WRONG, he is the best person to be President of the U.S., and I hope he changes his mind. You bet I love Huckabee…I have followed his every move, poll etc since 2007, so when I hear your comments they sound absolutely stupid because you don’t even know what you are talking about when it comes to Huckabee.

BTW, with Huckabee in the race, Palin didn’t stand a chance and she knew it. If you all noticed, she didn’t start her tour or anything until after Huckabee withdrew from the race.

Herself,

Just think Huckabee started at less than 2%in the polls before 2007-2008 primary, yet he came in second with hardly any money. I don’t think Pawlenty could have better advice than what Huckabee gave him.
