Weiner to seek “treatment” as Pelosi, Wasserman-Schultz call on him to resign; Update: Waiting for Huma? Update: Delaware police end investigation

posted at 4:09 pm on June 11, 2011 by Allahpundit

Conveniently, the “short leave of absence” he’ll be taking from Congress coincides with the end of the recess on Monday, where he would have faced an angry and unified Democratic caucus demanding that he resign.

This guy really is utterly terrified of losing his power, isn’t he?

Pelosi released the following statement Saturday:

“Congressman Weiner has the love of his family, the confidence of his constituents, and the recognition that he needs help. I urge Congressman Weiner to seek that help without the pressures of being a Member of Congress.”

Wasserman Schultz released the following statement:

“It is with great disappointment that I call on Representative Anthony Weiner to resign. The behavior he has exhibited is indefensible and Representative Weiner’s continued service in Congress is untenable. This sordid affair has become an unacceptable distraction for Representative Weiner, his family, his constituents and the House – and for the good of all, he should step aside and address those things that should be most important – his and his family’s well-being.”

Steve Israel, head of the DCCC, also issued a statement. According to the Times piece linked above, he called Weiner yesterday to tell him he had to go and, presumably, to give him a heads up that the Democratic leadership would be dropping a coordinated bomb on him today if he didn’t. And yet, faced with another day of humiliation and the inescapable fact that tomorrow morning’s chat shows will be all Weiner, all the time, one of America’s highest-functioning men still can’t bring himself to quit. That fanatic attachment to power, even at the price of seeing his dignity shredded in the media day after day, is one of the creepiest parts of this story.

But not quite the creepiest, depending upon how this angle of the scandal plays out:

Delaware police are looking for the direct messages sent back and forth between Weiner and the 17-year-old high school girl…

Police sources told FoxNews.com the girl brought her laptop and phone to the police station Friday evening.

The girl’s mother said her daughter told her that none of the messages she received from Weiner were inappropriate.

Sources said much of the conversations between Weiner and the high schooler had been deleted from the girl’s computer.

Why would a teenaged Anthony Weiner fan who’d had innocuous conversations with her political hero want to erase them? Why not preserve them instead and show them off to friends? E.g., “And here’s where he encouraged me to join Model UN. And here’s where he told me to apply myself and keep working for the people,” etc. Actually, maybe it wasn’t the girl who deleted the tweets; maybe it was Weiner himself, suddenly sensitive for whatever reason about getting caught DMing with a high-school student. See Ace for more in that vein.

Just for fun, here’s flashback video of Wasserman-Schultz, forever robotically on message, insisting that Weiner’s online chats are a “personal matter.” Once the words “underaged girl” started appearing in headlines, the official party message had to change; hence today’s resignation demand from DWS. Exit question via Dave Weigel: What is Weiner seeking “treatment” for, precisely? Sex addiction? According to Weiner, he didn’t have sex with anyone except his wife. In fact, as Weigel notes, at his presser on Monday Weiner specifically said, “This is not something that can be treated away; this is my own personal mistake.” When did he become convinced that he did, in fact, have a sympathy-inducing malady rather than a scorn-inducing penchant for power-tripping and sexual recklessness? Oh well. According to senior Democrats, it won’t save him.

Update: I thought for sure it was the news about the high-school student that forced the Democrats’ hand, but a senior Democratic official says nope. They’ve been planning to drop the resignation bomb on him for days, hoping against hope that some small sense of honor would lead him to quit before it came to that.

Not a smart bet, really.

A senior Democratic official told CNN that the decision to call for Weiner’s resignation had “been in the works for several days” and the discussions “between the political committees resulted in an internal Saturday morning deadline for him to resign on his own.”

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said the decision “was decided before the Delaware news broke.”

Update: He’ll never, ever give up power unless the only alternative is jail time, says KP: “I’ll say it for the 800th time: Anthony will not resign unless there is threat of legal prosecution, which at this point there would be no basis for.”

Update (Ed): National Journal’s report has this interesting tidbit, emphasis mine:

Both Pelosi and Israel called Weiner in New York on Saturday to urge him to resign. They told him they had statements prepared to call for him to resign and vowed to release him if he didn’t comply. Weiner told them that he would not make a move until his wife Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, returned from her trip to Africa and the Middle East with Clinton. Abedin is expected back on Wednesday.

I’d guess that Pelosi and Israel might want to arrange a video conference call between Weiner and his wife ASAP.  Weiner’s response seems to indicate that he may be retreating from his no-surrender position.

Update: News via Ace: Police have wrapped their investigation into Weiner’s DMs with the girl.

A spokesman says police in Delaware have completed their investigation into Rep. Anthony Weiner’s online contact with a 17-year-old girl.

C.R. McLeod, a spokesman for the New Castle County government, told The Associated Press on Saturday that investigators have concluded their probe and don’t plan any further comment “unless something new arises that needs their attention.”

(Did it again. This is why I hate preview! It’s too close to submit.)

I don’t know why, in the middle of the the firefight between the rank and file on one side and the rest of the Left on the other, you’re calling on our general to go stand in No Man’s Land. Now if you can show he’s not working on getting the deals we need to right the country’s fiscal crisis, then I’ll team up with you, but otherwise, why ask bother him?

Besides, there’s still a large cohort that suggests Weiner staying is a good thing, ’cause we can point to him everytime a Dem head pops up from trench line all the way to 2012.

It can’t be a harassment issue, since every feminist since Andrea Dworkin swears that “unequal power relationships” spawn sexual harassment, if not outright rape.

Zumkopf on June 11, 2011 at 4:22 PM

I believe that “unequal power relationships,” consensual though they may be, are considered de facto harassment in the sexual harassment law Clinton signed (and was lauded for by the Dworkin crowd). Can you think of a more unequal power relationship than the president of the United States and an un-paid intern?

SukieTawdry on June 11, 2011 at 5:33 PM

From the very beginning, it has only been a matter of time until the guy resigns. KP knows him personally, but the reality is… a guy named Weiner flashed his weiner. That’s the uh, long and short of it. lol

The Democrats weren’t going to relish the prospect of spending the next 18 months listening to Weiner jokes. And now that they’ve called for his resignation, it’s a direct power struggle where egos will naturally be in play.

The guy should’ve saved whatever small scrap of dignity he could find.

If Weiner were a Republican and we had a GOP president, the media would be hounding and hounding him for a comment. They’d be drawing a line from Weiner’s wiener to the Oval Office day and night. Pelosi has an awfully funny way of asking him to resign. She said he has the “confidence of his constituents.” If that means anything at all, it means that Pelosi believes his constituents believe he remains fit to hold office. That being the case, why would she seek his departure? By what right would she seek it?

Ms. Wasserman Schultz called Mr. Weiner’s online exchanges a “sordid affair” that had become an “unacceptable distraction” for the congressman, his constituents and the House.

Had become an “unacceptable distraction”? What was the demarcation line?

Acceptable if an Old Porn actor, unacceptable if a current Porn actor?

Acceptable if a 17 year-old high school student, Unacceptable if a 15 year-old high school student?

Acceptable if he intentionally accuses innocent Americans of having committed federal crimes, smears 2-3 private companies of allowing him to be hacked due to lack security on their part, allows these lies and smears to propagate throughout the world?

Unacceptable if he intentionally accuses innocent Americans of having committed federal crimes, smears 2-3 private companies of allowing him to be hacked due to lack security on their part, allows these lies and smears to propagate throughout the world and tell a 16 year-old high school student he’s like a “Super Hero”?

So he can now go hide in rehab, fake getting therapy (we all know sexual addictions are almost not curable), get out of the new cycle, and he will emerge later, a contrite, “reformed” man, and will be all forgiven by progressives who have no moral core beliefs. This is a RESUME ENHANCEMENT for his career. He will also then be on track for mayor of NYC because who else is in the wings there?

Obviously, based on polling, his constituents don’t care. Hell, they don’t even care that Obozo sold Israel down the river, why should they care about a simple sex text?

The ultimate irony would be if Trump doesn’t run as a third party next year, but his disgust for wiener motivates HIM to run for a 3rd party stab at NYC mayor. Now that would be hilarious.

So there are treatment centers for curing “Dumba$$”?

Maybe Hawk will help me out here: a few years ago there was a 3 or 4 star at Ft Monroe (or was it Langley AFB) who was canned overnight because he was “involved” with a civilian (who had zero connections to the military) whilst he was legally separated from his wife awaiting the final divorce decree.

I’m now connected to a large corporation…if I did what Weiner did, I’d be history before the sun went down. But, if you are in Congress, no problemo.

The Democratic National Socialist Progressive Party: It ends not with a bang, but with a Wiener.

Democrats dreading whatever comes next, and that they’re reaching the end of their rope with Weiner:

Anybody else buying it…not me. Could have done a goat and it’s not a problem for a Dem/liberal….nor obama…whatever is there moral compass.

Who got to the police???

Didn’t Weiner admit sending his weiner pic “accidentally” to everyone he was stalking before deleting it?

Where is the GOP leadership?

Roy Rogers on June 11, 2011 at 8:33 PM

This is sick.

End of story.

Sick and disgusting.

Were I the father of that 17 year old I would want to hang Anthony Wiener by his umm wiener from the the Brooklyn Bridge.

Perhaps that would teach the disgusting perverted piece of pond scum not to do what he did.

Either that or he’d eventually fall to his death from the pain of it and we’d be rid of him that way.

SgtSVJones on June 11, 2011 at 9:14 PM

Are these comments a sign of the power of the internet or that I have too much time on my hands?

Anthony Weiner’s Saturday morning:

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/nothing_explicit_weiner_denies_rated_wMW8sl5M1w8ie0mwldmzdJ

He left his Forest Hills apartment and went about routine morning errands, fetching his shirts at the Smile Often dry cleaner on nearby Austin Street.

Reporters trailed the Congressman as he left his Ascan Avenue home for the dry cleaners, a stop at an ATM and a brief visit to a local real estate firm.

Search Google Maps for:

Sovereign Bank, 7244 Austin Street, Forest Hills, NY

I think that there is a transcription error in the NY Post story because Smile Austin cleaners, aka, Austin Quality Dry Cleaning, is across Ascan Avenue at 7310 Austin Street.

And if you say otherwise or point out that the police pass their reports to the DA who makes the final determination, Ace will cuss you out and threaten to ban you…

How does one take “a leave of absence” from a job where you work only three days a week WHEN IN SESSION!

These do nothings in Congress haven’t even passed a national budget IN TWO YEARS! And as far as I am concerned, it is WE THE PEOPLE who bear the responsibility for putting the country in the shape it is in and I don’t think things are going to improve for quite some time.

There may be a way to force their hand.

Don’t forget, filing the ethics charge was really a delaying tactic on the part of the former Speaker because she thought it would buy him time until this died down. Those ethics committee matters take forever! But it backfired and got much worse. So now she and Debbie are demanding his resignation.

Now, it is Weiner who is trying to buy time by temporarily taking a leave of absence and going in for “treatment.”

But the Constitution gives the House authority over member qualifications and the attendance of its members. The United States Constitution specifically provides at ARTICLE I, Section V, para. 1., that: “Each House shall be the judge of …the qualifications of its own members;” [and goes on to provide that a designated smaller than a majority number] “may be authorized to compel the attendance of absent members, in such manner, and under such penalties as each house may provide.”

What the Republicans could do is to compel his attendance at some specific upcoming time, and identify those several factual matters on which there is no dispute, and therefore, matters on which the House could act forthwith without in any way denying Weiner due process.

Those factual matters would not be matters in dispute, because they would simply be a reiteration of the specific items he confessed to in the course of his press conference the other day.

Therefore, they could specifically list those matters and include them in a “sense of the House resolution” which could either provide for his expulsion, or be crafted in the form of a demand for his immediate resignation.

Further, the United States Constitution also specifically provides at ARTICLE I, Section V, para. 2, that “Each House may … punish its members for disorderly behavior, and with the concurrence of two-thirds, expel a member.”

A Member could therefore rise and make a motion to create a “Committee of the Whole” to act on those matters arising out of the Weiner matter, specifically those items that are not in dispute, someone seconds the motion, and the House could take a vote and create the Committee.

That would force the Democrats’ hand. Who would vote against the creation of such a Committee of the Whole? Rangel? Who else? Five or ten Members?

Then have the Committee list those things he has done and admitted to (e.g., sending the inappropriate and salacious images; publicly lying by insisting he was hacked; etc., and engagement in admittedly inappropriate chats with at least 6 women) in the form of a resolution, and pass it. Give him the opportunity to respond at a time of compelled attendance to the things he has already admitted to! What is he going to say . . . he was lying again?!

Once the resolution has been adopted by the House, and naturally calls for a duly authenticated and passed copy to be delivered to him forthwith, following its passage, the process would be complete.

It could be framed to either demand his immediate resignation, or provide therein for his expulsion. Let a minority of the Democrats squawk.

This guy brought utter and contemptible disrepute on the House with his egregious behavior. At some point in that process he would likely throw in the towel, but if he hangs tough, toss him out or deman he resign with a vast majority of the members voting in favor of the resolution.
