Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on June 9, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

One week ago today, the White House let it be known that presidential politics was the last thing on Barack Obama’s mind. Agence France Presse reported on how Obama hardly even knew about Mitt Romney’s entry into the race on the Republican side, according to Jay Carney, who insisted that the subject never came up in briefings because Obama was just so darned busy working on the really important stuff:

The White House said Thursday that President Barack Obama was barely paying attention to the Republican race to unseat him in 2012, as a possible foe Mitt Romney threw his hat into the ring.

But it did mount a detailed defense of Obama’s economic record, as Romney warned that the Democrat carried into office in 2008 amid souring hopes for change, he had “failed America” and made the recession longer and worse.

Asked whether Obama was beginning to eye the accelerating 2012 race, as aides built his own campaign machinery, White House spokesman Jay Carney suggested it was not yet time for election talk.

“When we’re traveling and (we) spend a lot of time talking with him about different subjects, he is not focused on that,” Carney said.

Jim Geraghty was almost convinced of the argument, except that he had read an Associated Press report the day before on exactly what was getting Obama’s focus:

Obama is expected to headline fundraisers in Miami, Washington, D.C., New York and Philadelphia before the end of the fundraising quarter on June 30, people familiar with the events said. First lady Michele Obama is expected to hold fundraisers in California in June, they said.

Obama launched his re-election campaign in April and has headlined several fundraisers around the country, with some of the proceeds divided between the Democratic National Committee and his re-election campaign.

He’s doing four fundraisers in June for his presidential election bid, but he’s not focused on it?  Do they plan to make Obama fundraisers into surprise parties?  How about the eighteen fundraisers he already attended between April 4 and May 23?  In case you’re wondering, that’s close to three per week, which is an awful lot of partying for the unfocused.

Jim gives Obama the benefit of the doubt:

The contradiction here is probably just a matter of the left hand not knowing what the further-left hand is doing.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I think it’s disgusting that he wants to raise a billion dollars for his campaign. For what he’s done to this country and this economy he should be forced to do federal financing and not a penny more.

I hope he doesn’t raise 1/4 of that.

gophergirl on June 9, 2011 at 8:09 AM

He’s really just focused on golf.

JimK on June 9, 2011 at 8:09 AM

The endless campaign.

The man is the incumbent, the man has a record of achievement(?). Why does he need a BILLION dollars?

Please, voters, make him go away!

Obama was just so darned busy working on the really important stuff…

Until those fundraisers begin, his principal project will be working on his golf scores and making sure the White House kitchen is fully stocked with Wagyu beef.

On the whole, I think it’s more like the POTUS’s concept of his reelection campaign is about how good he’s going to look while doing it. Details what he’s going to say and who his oppenent might be are for others to worry about.

And leave us not forget that the POTUS is too focused on the economy to worry about anything else….

apostic on June 9, 2011 at 8:16 AM

Did anyone ask a follow up as to what he considers the really important stuff or are we to assume that it’s the economy, jobs, budget, wars, et al. The campaigner in chief has really improved his multi tasking the last few years to be able to fund raise, give please re-elect me and I’ll do better speeches and focus on the really important stuff.

I loathe this man. He’s a one man Marxist Wrecking Ball of Mass Destruction and he needs to go away. Now.

Key West Reader on June 9, 2011 at 8:20 AM

The dud’s a lying sack of s**t… No surprise here; at least the man’s consistent.

Keemo on June 9, 2011 at 8:21 AM

Calling them liars after every instance of lies they have told doesn’t affect them one bit. They are on a mission, they have brainwashed themselves into believing they are serving a greater good, and they are more than willing to ignore the means to achieve the results they see as “destiny.” There is a reason they are called “OBAMABOTS.”
.
I just hope the majority of the electorate isn’t like them and will see the deception in time. If not, we’re going to have to publicly make fun of a lot more Democrats!

Giggles is not going to go away. Even when he’s booted from office he’ll still have his smug, jug-eared, purple lipped, whistling-s face and voice all over the news. He’ll be Jimmy Carter, constantly nattering about how bad we are (but only when a Republican is in office, of course), but 1000 times worse.

These days, in the light of recent events, the last thing in the world I would want to know is what a Democrat’s left hand is doing.

All these brilliant journalists, why didn’t anyone follow up with the pretty obvious, “Three fundraisers a week… Do you want to rethink that statement, Mr. Carney?”

Eh, I saw a Jon Stewart clip (and I usually avoid them like the plague) where Messiah talked about a tough economy and Stewart mugged and shouted “Yeah, NO S+++, Sherlock!”

Remember there was a time late night “comedians”, especially THIS one, were not allowed to joke about such a serious person.

Why, he’s focused like a laser on the economy. The first thing he thinks about every morning, and the last thing he thinks about at night before going to sleep, is the economy. But he’s not worried about a double dip recession because his “profits and earnings ratios” are showing green shoots.

Phony.

psrch on June 9, 2011 at 9:02 AM

The Democratic Party has degenerated to such an extent that the following scenario is entirely possible:
The Democrats orchestrate the martyrdom of Obama (yes, that means exactly what you think it does), run Hillary ala LBJ in ’64 (“We must carry on his work!”), and pin the mess on the Repubs. Obama’s the perfect patsy for this. No real background, no real friends, or powerful family to cause a stir. I’m sure Soros, and his gang of criminals consider Obama completely expendable to the greater cause. Real Democrats (are there any left?) must take back their party from the insane, Progressive Left.

teacherman on June 9, 2011 at 9:08 AM

“The contradiction here is probably just a matter of the left hand not knowing what the further-left hand is doing.”

President Obama’s “hope and change” has been nothing short of a contradiction of American values based on individual responsibility. In just three short years, (along with the Pelosi House), the Democratic Party has re-defined and repositioned our federal government’s role while spending trillions in unfunded debt. The voting public gave the Democrats the responsibility and authorization to spend wisely from 2007 forward as they campaigned on Bush’s irresponsible spending practices, while hypocritically opposing two necessary wars. A funny thing happened last November that Democrats have dismissed as an anomaly—the voting public said NO MORE. The voting public said no to ObamaCare, and they were ignored while the Democrats shoved this massive government intrusion down our throats with payoffs to every institution and politician who had their hand out. And now we, (the voting public), are expected to agree that this social experiment will “win the future”??? Without the liberal media’s devoted relationship/investment in Obama’s future, many would be calling for this President’s resignation, not a contemplation for an extended four more years that will move this country even further to the left. Here’s hoping Jim Carney and the Obama “non-campaign” machine are in for a shocking display of electoral correction.

crazy_legs on June 9, 2011 at 8:26 AM

crazy_Legs: I am going to have to respectfully disagree. I think that the Once is going to be “Wienerized”.

What do I mean by that? I sense the economy, foreign affairs, and a “Black Swan” event are going to combine in 2012 to a landslide scale win for the Republican who prevails in the primary. Associating with such a large-scale failure will no be something the elite media will chose to do, so outside of a few courtesy interviews, people are going to put “Giggles” out of their minds and the news once he leaves office.

That is my prediction.
