Quotes of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on June 8, 2011 by Allahpundit

“Embattled New York Rep. Anthony Weiner’s prospects for political survival dimmed precipitously on Wednesday with the appearance on the Internet of an X-rated photo said to be of the congressman — and the first calls from fellow Democrats for him to step down…

“The Associated Press has not been able to independently confirm that the photo is of Weiner. On Wednesday, spokeswoman Risa B. Heller noted in a statement that Weiner had said at a news conference on Monday that he ‘has sent explicit photos. To reiterate, he has never met any of these women or had physical contact with them.’”

***
“A Democratic legislator familiar with discussions with and about Weiner told CNN that Weiner’s colleagues are telling him he should resign ‘to preserve his own dignity.’

“The congressman, who spoke on condition of not being identified by name in order to discuss private conversations, said the public call by Schwartz was part of a stepped-up effort to force Weiner out. According to the source, the effort includes private and public calls explicitly telling him it’s time to leave Congress.

“‘There is increased resentment by his colleagues that far from having a press conference where he was going to tell the truth and roll with the flames, the flames are just getting worse and he’s dragging us through it,’ the source said. ‘We really thought by now, after the press conference, we would be able to talk about the Republicans’ Social Security privatization bill and instead we keep talking about Anthony Weiner. And people are getting angrier and more resentful.’”

***
“A person close to Mr. Weiner said he still is determined to hold onto the seat he first won in 1998. But Democratic aides said that if he continues to resist calls to resign, the situation could reach a boiling point Monday when House members return to Washington.

“The controversy has become a national embarrassment for Democratic leaders, who have come under fire from Republicans for not moving more aggressively to demand Mr. Weiner’s departure. Senior Democratic leadership aides expect more colleagues to come forward in the next few days to call on Mr. Weiner to resign…

“‘Maybe his political career is over, but I’m sure he’s going to have a show on television,’ predicted the senior Democratic staffer.”

***
“Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) has failed to help his party financially in past election cycles, which is another infraction on the growing list of Democratic grievances with the lawmaker.

“Weiner is known as a lone wolf in the Democratic caucus and has a history of failing to pay his dues to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Members are required to contribute based on a scale taking into account factors like time in Congress, whether a member is in leadership and the lawmaker’s campaign needs…

“That failure to be a team player for House Democrats is now coming back to haunt Weiner as he faces increasing pressure to resign.”

***
“Publicly humiliated Huma Abedin won’t ditch her lecherous husband, and is actually working overtime to help salvage his gravely wounded political career, a close friend told The Post.

“She even hunkered down with disgraced Rep. Anthony Weiner in a New York hotel Monday night — an incredible show of support just hours after a blubbering Weiner confessed to three years of sleazy online flings…

“‘They are still talking all the time about what to do [to survive the scandal],’ the source said, adding that they plotted his political comeback while at the hotel.”

As usual, Steyn pretty much sums everything up:

Like Kirsten Powers, I have minimal expectations of this country’s depraved political class. But if you can’t draw the line at being ruled by creeps with a spambot penis, you can’t draw it anywhere. Anthony Weiner Tweets his crotch to young women on the grounds that, even if only one in twenty responds, that’s still a helluva strike rate: Shame on him. If his electors and the broader political culture acquieses in that, shame on us.

If the “progressives” ever actually get the government that they lust for, a government of the “best, brightest, most compassionate”, the “brain trust”..etc ad nauseum, a government that will not need elections because they are “the best among us”, then this government will no longer need to buy their votes. That is, they will no longer need to provide lifestyle to them. Once in power, with patriots enslaved, they will look at their books and say “hmmm, we really DO need to placate our creditors now…” They will have no need for the old, the sick, and those who for generations have had all productive ability bred out of them via the welfare state. Those who are productive will be slaves; the rest will be…..”made equal”.

The liberal “brain trust” resembles rats fleeing a sinking ship.

Roy Rogers on June 9, 2011 at 1:06 AM

Weiner is the perfect example of the “Peter Principle”.
One rises to the level of their incompetance and no further. He actually exceeded his level, much like the CIC (BHO). To paraphrase a not so great speaker, “The chickens have come home to roost.”

Lummox on June 9, 2011 at 1:16 AM

This scandal seemed like an insane cat’s cradle, with Spitzer commenting on the bad judgment of Weiner, who was a beach-house buddy of Jon Stewart and who was married by Bill Clinton to Huma, who was a White House intern for Hillary (who ran against the two-timing Edwards) when Monica was an intern for Bill.

Here is what will happen:

1. Bill Clinton (or his gang-members) jump in and say that “It’s just all about sex!.”

2. All the media-elites then say “Nothing to see here, time to move on.”

3. Barney Frank franticly tries to get Weiner’s email address.

4. Any time Weiner is asked about it, he proclaims “This is old news and we need to move forward.”

5. Democrats refresh their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Check this one out:

http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/07/that-look-that-weiner-spitzer-clinton-look/

And in the “Name the party” edition, five out of six are Democrats. Only one is a Republican. If the ratio had been the other way around, the New York Times would have the party affiliation of every one of them named in bold letters.

Yes, Republicans do such things, but it happens much, much, much more often with the Democrats. (Every bushel will have at least one bad apple, but why pick the bushel where most of the apples are bad?)

Theophile on June 9, 2011 at 4:06 AM

Democrats. (Every bushel will have at least one bad apple, but why pick the bushel where most of the apples are bad?)

Theophile on June 9, 2011 at 4:06 AM

Because Democrat voters don’t want standards. They want pork and “freebies”.

Rep. Anthony Weiner (X-NY)

-Aslan’s Girl

Aslans Girl on June 9, 2011 at 6:44 AM

Remember that for all the Democratic Party bleating there are things they can do:

1) Pull Weiner’s party membership. Toss him from the party.

2) San Fran Nan could have him excluded from every committee.

3) San Fran Nan could exclude him from the minority caucus.

If they can’t do the simple, basic things for something like this to distance themselves from the man, then what will come their way is their fault. Not his. Someone not doing the right thing doesn’t prevent YOU from doing the right thing… they will try to trot out some version of ‘its his responsibility’, but they will forget that the stewardship of the party and the House Minority Caucus are in their hands, not his.

For all of his ‘attack dog’ work, he has stepped on a lot of toes, talked over a lot of more senior party members and has made few friends outside the Leftist establishment. He is becoming a representative of what the Democratic Party is NOW because the rest of the party cannot distance itself from HIM. That is THEIR fault, not HIS. And they are going to get the results of not doing the right thing in the way their party continues to drift. So long as this drags on the fault will be placed at the Party doorstep, not just Weiner’s.

that’s what gets me with his arrogance…..schmuck

cmsinaz on June 9, 2011 at 7:09 AM

True to liberal loyalty, Weiner’s friends are now telling him that he ought to leave because….it’s hurting them!

For those of us that have long observed the left’s penchant for ever shifting their cause dejour and humously, which side of that morality by convenience”they happen to choose today–this comes as no surprise. Like a gang of drug dealers, the last one to double- cross the other is the winner.

Even digitally, there remins in the world, insufficient room to list their hypocrisy of their own stated principles.

The latest inarguable evidence is the unilateral and illegal war that Obama is conducting in Libya, and now we hear of clandestine strikes in Yeman. The professional war protesters on the left have instantly morphed into advocates of what they vehemently just pretended to loathe.

Such is the mindset of such Godless folks.

Goodbye Mr. Weiner, the political equivelent of the Paul Wellstone funeral is about to see you off. The celebratory drinks are already flowing among your friends on the left – as the set about to party in great relief.

If you listen to some of his constituents being interviewed, they don’t seem to mind they have a lying, scum bag pervert for a representative. He’s very popular was one comment. Would they be so kind if he had sent those photos to their wives or sisters? Hey, guys, it’s not really sex so no big deal.

Kissmygrits on June 9, 2011 at 8:37 AM

Call me cynical, but this very conveniently announced pregnancy has me a little skeptical….a pregnancy that was announced in a NYT blog but not confirmed by the Weiners. It reeks of Clintonesque manipulation; “Only a cruel, heartless public would pile onto this beautiful couple during this very special time in their lives”. If she is pregnant, Huma needs to dump his sorry butt. I’ve never understood the theory that any father, even a sleazbag father that is too arrogant to even consider therapy, is better than no father.

It ain’t support because of love. She wants to ride his coattails. Look at Elizabeth Edwards. She knew Johnny boy was cheating and said nothing during his run for president because she could tolerate the cheating as long as she could be first lady. Hillary too.
