Poll: 41% of New Yorkers think Weiner should stay, 46% think he should resign

posted at 5:08 pm on June 7, 2011 by Allahpundit

The gender split isn’t what you might expect…

…although, per a separate question about whether people would be more likely to vote for him or against him for mayor now, his NYC ambitions are well and truly sunk:

Can he hang onto his House seat? Anecdotal evidence collected from his constituents suggests they’re ready to forgive and forget (“I think he did the right thing, I kind of respected it at the end”), but Philip Klein notes that Weiner’s district is actually more Republican than New York City is generally. Let me add a caveat, then, to what I said last night about him surviving this scandal if he plays his cards right. Caveat: He can survive it unless he turns out to have lied at the press conference too. The public can, I think, tolerate near-pathological lying by a politician if he comes clean later and seems genuinely contrite, but if he’s caught lying during his alleged act of contrition, though? Too much, too much.

Does this qualify as a lie?

In a series of messages dating back to Sept. 17, 2010, Weiner wrote to 40-year-old Lisa Weiss — a Nevada blackjack dealer who went back and forth with Weiner on Facebook for more than a year — that he was interested in meeting her.

“i’m ready for a vegas trip. truth telling during the day. got a night plan for us?” Weiner wrote, according to a transcript of 220 messages posted on RadarOnline.com…

He said [at the press conference] he had never met or had a physical relationship with any of the women and was not even sure of their ages.

Weiner also said he had never had sex outside of his marriage.

So he was, apparently, open to meeting these women, although he never followed through? Or was he just stringing this particular woman along with hints of meeting in order to keep her talking and play out the online fantasy? Actually, never mind that. Here’s a better question from Steve Kornacki: Why wouldn’t this guy want to resign? He’s not much of a legislator. The whole point of his congressional career, it seems, is simply to position him to run for mayor, which ain’t happening now in the near term. Is his new plan to hang around the House for another five years in order to have a shot at the mayor’s race in 2016? If another Democrat is elected mayor next year and runs for reelection, he’ll have to wait until 2020 at the earliest. Why doesn’t he just quit and go do something he’s good at? 10 p.m., MSNBC. Move over, Big Ed.

Reporters asked Harry Reid today what he’d do if Weiner called him for advice. Click the image for his answer.

Weiner be gone …

darwin on June 7, 2011 at 5:09 PM

19% of women in NYC are “not sure” if they want him to resign?

I’m taking a guess that a lot of those want him to stick around but don’t want to admit it.

teke184 on June 7, 2011 at 5:11 PM

The Weiner’s out?!? The Weiner’s out?!?

Mary in LA on June 7, 2011 at 5:12 PM

If he doesn’t resign, he’ll get (and perhaps deserve) death by a thousand tweets. One at a time.

New Yorkers a bunch of Weiner supporters.

If Weiner wasn’t sure of their ages, we certainly can’t blame him if he shot his schvantz to a 12 year old.

According to this poll, it doesn’t seem people are prematurely evaluating his chances of staying in office.

If this obnoxious socialist prevert can hang onto his seat after sending pictures of his joint to 20 year olds, and Paul Ryan gets voted out because he’s trying to prevent the collapse of Medicare, I’m going to go live in a cave in the Northwest Territory somewhere.

Not likely to happen, but I’ll do it if it does.

This will all “blow” over. Wiener will be “serviced” well by his constituents because they will vote him back into office in 2012.

It doesn’t matter what his constituents think. He’s a Dem and won’t listen to the “people” he claims too serve. He’ll stay, just like all arrogant Dems, he’ll stay. And by the time he’s up for reelection, the people of his district will more than likely think this is old news and vote for him again. Lucky us.

That’s a image I really did not need.

According to Meagan Broussard, a 26-year-old single mother from Texas, Weiner was eager to

hear about if I wanted him or thought he was attractive.

Which is this idiot? A United States Congressman or a Middle Schooler?

Weiner told everyone gathered that:

I’m not resigning, and I’m going to try very hard to go back to work a better man and a better husband, too.

Uh Huh. Gimme that ol’ time contrition.

I’ll Stick Around – Foo Fighters

I thought I knew
all it took to bother you
every word I said was true
and that you’ll see

how could it be
I’m the only one who sees
your rehearsed insanity

I still refused
all the methods you abused
it’s alright if you’re confused
let me be

I’ve been around
all the pawns you’ve gagged and bound
they’ll come back and knock you down
and I’ll be free

I’ve taken all and I’ve endured
one day this all will fade I’m sure

I don’t owe you anything

I had no hand
in your ever desperate plan
it returns and when it lands
words are due

I should’ve known
we were better off alone
I looked and I was shown
you were too

I’ve taken all and I’ve endured
one day this all will fade I’m sure

I don’t owe you anything
