Obama loses 20 points in approval/disapproval gap in new WaPo/ABC poll
posted at 8:45 am on June 7, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
What a difference a month makes! Or, rather, what a difference one extraordinary event can make for a very brief time in polling, as well as some ridiculously skewed survey samples. Five weeks after scoring a +18 in approval in the Washington Post poll from the killing of Osama bin Laden, Barack Obama’s approval rating returned to its pre-OBL mission underwater status — although you’d need to get to the sample data to learn the extent of the fall:
The public opinion boost President Obama received after the killing of Osama bin Laden has dissipated, and Americans’ disapproval of how he is handling the nation’s economy and the deficit has reached new highs, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The survey portrays a broadly pessimistic mood in the country this spring as higher gasoline prices, sliding home values and a disappointing employment picture have raised fresh concerns about the pace of the economic recovery.
Obama’s approval rating from the last poll in the series (when the Post partnered with Pew rather than ABC) was 56/38. Today’s rating is 47/49, almost identical to the mid-April 47/50 Obama received. The mid-April approval rating was Obama’s worst in the series since the midterm elections, when likely voters gave him a 46/52 approval ratio. Today’s number represents a drop in the gap of 20 points, a dramatic decline, but it’s more likely just the electorate shrugging off the OBL bump and returning to Obama’s chronically poor performance as President.
And you know who that helps?
New Post-ABC numbers show Obama leading five of six potential Republican presidential rivals tested in the poll. But he is in a dead heat with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, who formally announced his 2012 candidacy last week, making jobs and the economy the central issues in his campaign.
Among all Americans, Obama and Romney are knotted at 47 percent each, and among registered voters, the former governor is numerically ahead, 49 percent to 46 percent.
Actually, it helps pretty much all Republicans. In another question, the poll surveyed on Obama’s re-election prospects, and once again Obama hit new post-midterm lows. Only 24% of the overall sample will definitely vote for a second Obama term, while 45% will definitely not do so; among registered voters, those numbers go up to 25/47. That’s actually worse than last November, when the definite support hit the 24% low mark but Obama only had 41% definitely opposed to a second term. Against specific Republicans, Obama lost ground to Romney as well as Newt Gingrich and Tim Pawlenty, but in all three cases, the changes were within the margins of error; there were no changes in Obama versus Palin or Bachmann.
On the issues, Obama didn’t move all that much from the post-OBL mission poll — which is not good news for the President:
- Economy – 40/59, was 40/55
- Deficit – 33/61, was 39/58
- Afghanistan – 52/41, was 60/29
- Terrorism – 60/34, was 69/21
Republicans in Congress took the lead on public trust on the economy, 45/42 over Obama, for the first time since December. The outlook on the economy remains doggedly pessimistic, with only 11% rating it as positive at all, and 89% rating it negatively, the highest since the midterms. Eighty-one percent now rate the economic recovery as “weak,” up from 75% in February 2010. A large majority, 57/42, do not feel the effects of a recovery on their personal economic situation. These are not re-elect numbers by any stretch of the imagination.
Finally, let’s look at the sample. The D/R/I in the April poll sample was a ridiculous 32/22/41. This sample has a slightly better split, although still skewed at 31/25/39, which still undersamples Republicans. In a sample more reflective of reality, Obama’s job approval would be lower than the 47% shown here, and he’d be in deeper trouble against Republican challengers than this shows.

We need Obama to believe he’s still ahead in the polls right up to election day. The saying “ignorance is bliss”, I want Obama to feel euphoric right up to the moment he has to give the concession speech. The AP will report the loss as “unexpected”.

8 years ago, I remember Big Media doing stories on soup lines in the heartland, with unemployment numbers between 4-5%
Suddenly, post Jan 20 2009, soup lines are non-existent.
Imagine what these numbers would be with the Big Media Perception Propaganda Machine removed.
I’d venture a guess that the liberal handicap is worth at least 10-15 points.

The media and the repub estab can spin all they want.
However, at the end of the day, this helps Palin.
Mitt Romney announces on a Thursday; Palin’s bus tour

papers hilight Palin and put news about Romney’s announcement in a subservient position in the paper – page
3 in one of them.
Romney thinks he can phone it in. – Voters, other than the
Roministas, Rombots, etc. are not in the mood for this
flip flopping, pick up truck, plaid shirt phoney.
Voters want the real deal and that my friends is only Palin.

Until pollsters release their raw data, with their math that alters for demographics and the full reason for them, then they have NO accuracy.
The Democrats are pushing for Romney because he’s liberal . The GOP is pushing for Romney because they are still stuck on the idea that the GOP can not hang on to enthusiasm and the message. That’s pre-Tea Party thinking.
Conservatism DOES win minds and voters. It’s the “moderates” aka Liberalas in the GOP that loses the sale

Obama will not be re-elected and relations between blacks and all other colors will have been set back some 50 years. Awaiting approval is a government program that is in committee at this time. It is a plan to provide a soy bean based cheese to those in need. The soy beans are to be grown on government inspected subsidized organic farms. The inspection comes with a 10k dollar fee. Small farms need not apply. The cheese is to be manufactured under strict energy guidelines requiring 80% from “alternative” sources, and will receive Obamacare waivers for the first 10 years. The funding comes under the heading “Jobs Program” and is scheduled for a 2017 roll out.

Polls right now can be hard to believe. They are often motivated as much by the needs of the campaign to motivate or demotivate parts of the population. I trust Rasmussen because he seems to be more of a polling geek–i.e. his interest is in perfecting his craft of precise population sampling, not trying to tell the guy paying for it what he wants to hear.
What this is telling me is that it’s beginning to sink in to the Democrat Party how vulnerable 0bama really is. I have Facebook friends alllll over the political spectrum. I tend to keep politics off my Facebook, mostly. The liberals have really retreated into Cloud Cuckoo Land, and really believe the hype that 0bama’s re-election is inevitable.
This poll was probably meant as a complacency-shaker for the Democrats, and a way to push Mitt Romney.

He is the only Republican in the field who came out against the Reagan-Bush agenda. I believe he is the only Republican who was ever staunchly pro-choice. He accepts most of the big government agenda from global warming to corn subsidies. He’s a principle-less squish who stands for nothing except that it is his turn. There’s a reason the media are pushing Romney – because he’d be another big government squish.

Chronic unemployment worse than Great Depression
No mention of Obama in the story.
Why Washington Won’t Fix the Economy
Besides a photo, no mention of Obama in the article.
U.S. funding for future promises lags by trillions
No mention of Obama.
Bad economic news? “Washington” or “The government” gets the blame. No mention of Democrats, Obama or the Obama administration. Curiouser and curiouser…
What would the polls relflect if the media attributed all this bad news to Obama? Like how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, the world may never know.

Yes, I think 94% of blacks voted for Obama.
I live in a predominantly white town with about 30% of

racial issues at the soccer, baseball, football games! LOL
Everyone gets along -
Previous to 2008 elections there would be a scattering
of blacks in the lines to vote. In 2008 there were hundreds at the polling place I go to. I can’t wait to see what happens in 2012.
Amjean on June 7, 2011 at 9:45 AM
All good points- I’m personally hoping for Rick Perry runs.
Just saying that Romneys stock and trade right now is Obamas huge weakness and Barry is not going to tack right- it’s not in his DNA.
So if the objective is to win, then he looks good. Romney doesn’t blow this race if nominated- others might.
Also- Ford needed 48 more hours and he would have won- all against a huge headwind following Watergate. Reagan may very have lost to Carter, also- it’s all about a moment in time and that time was bad for the GOP.
jjshaka on June 7, 2011 at 9:48 AM
Here’s the thing: We have 18 months until the 2012 election. What, if anything, will Obama do to improve the economy? He can’t try more stimulus. He can feign a free-market epiphany, but reality will reveal it as a charade. In the end, investors will not throw their money away on America so long as Obama is in the White House. He can cart out faux business leaders who are nothing more than green-economy whores, but the economy is not going to improve. And by Labor Day next year, he may still have his liberal zealots, blacks, and a regrettable chunk of Hispanics, but the swing voters are just not going to hang in with him. By next year, Obama will be the AA hire in everyone’s office who everyone knows needs to be fired but isn’t because of fear of action from the EEOC. Well, the ballot box has no recourse to the EEOC.
For the next year, the GOP should devote itself to a speaking tour on free-market economics. They should show how the uncertainty Obama has created is killing the economy. They need to do this because, as Stuart Varney said this morning on F&F, Obama is going to go all in demagoging American business for not being patriotic and investing in American jobs. The GOP needs to blunt that with a message that no one would invest their money in America knowing the Obama administration will confiscate it in too many ways.

There aren’t any GOP candidates I don’t like other than Gingrich but I hope we select a candidate that has the best chance of beating Obama and beating him soundly! No 2nd-guessing, no recounts, no Gore/Frankin/Kloppenburg repeats.
We need to campaign against a party that has most of the media cheerleading for them so the field is not level. It’s going to take some clever marketing and lots of money. Whoever can do this has the best chance. Having the “perfect conservative” candidate lose the election due to resources won’t do us any good.

So you actually think 9.1 % unemployment, $4 per gallon gas, 2 Marxist supreme court justices, and being involved in an addition “kinetic” action is not a success? Obama has successfully destroyed this country so far. Our next president will have to undo all that AND walk us back from the nonsense GWB left us with.

If the Mexicans figure out that they can swarm the border like the ‘palestinians’ are doing to Israel, it’s all over for us. What president would give the order to open fire?

You’re not paying attention. Try and read his comment, with understanding this time.
Rush never said Obama would fail.
Never.
He said he HOPED he would fail.
HOPED.

I don’t give Obama credit for being a well meaning but incompetent politician. He said he wanted to fundamentally transform America. We know that means the Cloward/Piven approach. Obama has been deliberate in his actions. He wanted 9.1% unemployment (unemployment entitlement class), $4 per gallon gas (green job takeover), Marxist justices (upholding unconstitutional legislation), a takeover of healthcare by the government (stateism), and more war (nationalism). He wants Americans to look to the federal government to fix their lives.
Obama has been successful, and if that means he is a one term president (in his own words), then so be it.
