Oh my: Pelosi calls for House ethics investigation of Weiner

posted at 6:30 pm on June 6, 2011 by Allahpundit

I thought for sure the Democratic line on this would be, “It’s over, he accepted responsibility, let’s move on.” Nope. So worried are they about the fallout that they’re willing to prolong the story as long as they can if it means they can get on the other side of it and isolate Weiner in doing so.

Or is this simply Pelosi knowing/expecting that the GOP will launch an investigation anyway and figuring that she might as well stand up for “good government” while she can?

But after his news conference, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced that she was calling for a House ethics committee probe into whether government resources had been mishandled.

“I am calling for an Ethics Committee investigation to determine whether any official resources were used or any other violation of House rules occurred,” Pelosi said.

Pelosi added that she was “deeply disappointed and saddened” for Weiner’s wife and constituents.

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) agreed that an ethics panel must review the situation in order to “remove all remaining doubt about this situation.” “Ultimately, Anthony and his constituents will make a judgment about his future,” Israel said in a statement.

Hard to tell from the photos published by Big Government today whether he was using “official resources” to sext anyone, but if he was reckless enough to send outre stuff from e-mail/Facebook accounts bearing his actual name — here’s the latest from Radar — he was probably reckless enough to use government computers/phone lines at some point. Meagan Broussard claims that he once gave her a phone number that turned out to be for one of his offices, in fact. Which makes me wonder: Are we going to end up with an Ensign-type scenario here, where he hangs on hoping that the House ethics committee doesn’t find anything too damaging and then decides to resign when they finally do?

The “official resources” angle won’t hurt him much anyway. What’ll destroy him, of course, is if any of these women are underaged, a possibility which Weiner couldn’t categorically rule out when asked about it by reporters. (Behold this screencap for the ages.) Click the image below to watch the key exchange from the presser; should any of his “women” turn out to be girls, he’s finished. Exit question: Why wasn’t he more careful about hiding his indiscretions? Normally I don’t buy psychobabble about how some bad actors act recklessly because deep down they want to get caught, but … e-mailing barechested pics that clearly identify his face and sending raunchy messages from accounts bearing his name? Dude?

Total Power totally corrupts. Weiner thought he was invincible, and irreplaceable. He thought all these women would be discreet. He thought he was a liberal Brad Pitt, in a heavily blue state who would shelter him from trouble. Trouble is, these ladies weren’t in New York.

If they thought Weiner was simply content to remain congressman for NY-9 for life, you might have gotten the “let’s move on” talking point. But Pelosi and others know Anthony, and they know he still thinks he has a shot to be mayor of New York in 2013. He sees how fast the big media rehabbed Eliot Spitzer, and no doubt is hoping they’ll do the same for him before 2013.

That means if the Democrats don’t move to force him out of the public spotlight, he’s not going to go quietly. So this is Step 1 in tossing him under the bus. Step 2 is going to be either sticking his area in with a stronger Democratic incumbent, or adding more eastern Queens/southern Brooklyn/western Nassau County Republican areas into NY-9 to make sure if he won’t leave on his own, the voters will do it for him next year.

I never ever bought that, for any situation. More that he likes being outrageous, and is thrilled at the idea of getting away with it. Like the con man who gets the bank president to cash his check, or who seduces the pastor’s wife, or thwarts the tightest security. Getting away with the most outrageous con, that’s the biggest turn on to him.

To me, his press conference was a continuation of the con.

Again, I agree with Ted C. This activity and character lapse on Wiener’s part is a HUGE issue (no pun intended because we all saw the picture!!), because Congresscritters can be compromised with this kind of stuff “out there”. Exactly right. They need this story to stop right now, so they can get back to telling America Republicans are racist scum who like to kill old people for sport when they aren’t busy poisoning water supplies in towns all across the country. What better way to get this off the front pages than to claim they can’t talk about it until the committee finishes their investigation. That’s a good place for all further revelations to come out in the driest possible language in a report issued at ten pm on Christmas eve.

Count me as someone who thinks we don’t need an “ethics investigation”, since we already have a good idea of the Congressman’s ethics. What we need is the greatest possible embarrassment. Shame is in short supply in Congress, and no ethics investigation will bring Anthony Weiner to shame.

Pelosi calls for House obligatory ethics investigation of Weiner

I personally don’t think any more will come of this than came of Rangel’s ethics investigation. Unless of course more women come forward, as they have in the IMF leader’s case. I’m betting there are more, in which case he may be asked to resign.

How do parents warn their teenagers not to do it, when a US Congressman can do it, lie about it, and then not have to give up anything when caught. That’s what Pelosi is afraid she’ll hear from parents. No consequences for Weiner sends the wrong message to their kids.

The Iowahawk tweets throughout this have been hilarious. He thanked Weiner on behalf of all married guys for setting the bar.

I can’t wait for the campaign ads showing a bare chested Weiner sitting in front a computer calling for increasing taxes.

Weiner lied about not using his official resources to conduct his cyber harem

And still RINO’s are silent.

Nancy Pelosi has said more for Chrissake!

Who all is hoping that breitbart releases the X rated photograph to force wiener to resign? I hope he releases the photo.

karenhasfreedom on June 6, 2011 at 7:04 PM

I am praying he will…

OmahaConservative on June 6, 2011 at 7:06 PM

We should go over to biggovernment and urge breitbart to release the picture to shame this dude into resigning.
