Yfrog confirms that e-mail upload feature “has not been compromised in any way”
posted at 12:00 pm on June 5, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
Those providing on-line services take security very, very seriously, because any hint of vulnerability will have users running to competitors almost instantly in the highly competitive Internet world. When Rep. Anthony Weiner and his defenders began blaming Yfrog for a mysterious tweet on his stream that included a photo of a crotch that Weiner couldn’t say “with certitude” wasn’t his, Yfrog responded by suspending all e-mail uploads until it could fully check security. On Friday, Yfrog announced the results of its investigation:
After confirming that our email upload feature has not been compromised in any way – it is now active again (from 5 pm PST today). We appreciate your patience as we work to assure user safety and security. Please always maintain secure passwords and do not share email secret PINs with anyone. Please contact us at is-support@imageshack.us with any questions, if you want your PINs changed or disabled.
Yfrog explains further:
At yfrog, we take security very seriously. We monitor all the activity on our site and network 24/7 to make sure we secure our services, especially the photos and videos of our users. Our commitment is to protect our users’ photos and make sure they are never lost, deleted by accident, or compromised in any way.
Email Upload Security ExplainedThe email upload feature was introduced as a convenience for users to send emails with their photos as attachments. The yfrog email PIN is given to the user for the sole purpose of uploading photos only to yfrog. As a private email PIN, it should be treated as confidential information, just like passwords.
To secure further, the user should:
- not share the email PIN with others.
- not include other recipients in the emails sent to yfrog to upload photos.
- not forward to other recipients the emails sent to the email PIN to upload photos to yfrog.
Why we Disabled Email UploadAt yfrog, we constantly evaluate our internal security mechanisms across all the facets of our service. Even though our email upload feature has not been compromised or broken into, we are taking this opportunity to evaluate the feature and secure it even further.
Security is Important to UsYfrog serves millions of users and over 2 billion requests worldwide every day with minimal or no attacks or disruptions. As we grow, we will continue to take every measure possible to secure our services so that our users’ photos and videos are protected.
In other words, one cannot upload photos to Yfrog with just a username, as some had alleged. Nor has Yfrog’s e-mail upload system been hacked or compromised. One might suspect from the quick and categorical conclusion to their probe that they may have some fairly convincing evidence of the origin of Rep. Weiner’s tweet and photo. If Weiner really is interested in getting to the bottom of this, he could ask Yfrog to release that information to the public, or at least send investigators to retrieve it and find the culprits.
Of course, a failure to do either makes it pretty clear that Weiner or someone he granted access to the account uploaded the picture and sent the tweet.

Twitter and Adobe (TweetDesk) are less incumbent on coming out and calling Weiner a BS artist, because their brands are better known and stronger than Yfrog, which can less afford to have it’s product questioned via people trying to clear the congressman’s name. But it would be nice if both companies would reassure users without going into intricate details that they have seen no signs that their software has been compromised in any way that would have produced the tweeted bulge photo (they don’t have to if their services are secure, but just like Yfrog, their security has been questioned via Weiner’s attempts to point the blame elsewhere).

The Daily learns tweet originated from app that pol used the night pic was posted
Weiner used TweetDeck frequently, but he often also posted from the Web directly or from his BlackBerry. A widely circulated explanation for how Weiner’s Twitter account could have been hacked by email would also seem to be incompatible with the fact that the message in question originated on TweetDeck. If email had been used, the message probably would have originated via the photosharing site Yfrog, where the infamous picture was posted.
All the shoes have dropped. Weiner is up the creek without a paddle. I just want to know is there going to be a demand for him to resign like his fellow New York Republican Representative?
How dumb to send basically a kid of 22 a photo of his 46 year old schlong.
Dr Evil on June 5, 2011 at 12:22 PM
I can’t say with certitude that yfrog did or didn’t conduct the double secret probationary investigation of non-linear crotch rocket drifts. But there is no, or little, maybe marginal, assurance that future photos certitudifably will or will not be of someone’s unrelated misogenous psychology.
Hope that settles it.

No, I’ll lay it on the line in my feeling on the situation with Weiner like maybe some are unwilling to admit. It an opportunity to get rid of an obnoxious opponent who deserves to be asked to step down. He’s a creep for doing this. Republicans have stepped down for less. stacman on June 5, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Democrats didn’t stop talking about this shirtless Republican Representative and now they have picked up his vacated seat. That does effect the numbers in the House of Representatives as does Weiner’s seat.
The 26th District in New York was held by a second-term Congressman named Chris Lee – you remember him – he’s the guy who posted the shirtless photographs of himself on Craigslist.
The world found out about them around 3 pm one day and by 5 pm, Lee had resigned his seat in the Congress. Again when is Weiner going to resign?
On the Democratic side, Kathy Hochul has eged ahead in some polls, as she tries to give her national party a big boost. She ends up winning. BECAUSE OF A SHIRTLESS PIC.

Sorry for the cliche, but isn’t the bottom line that Weiner screwed up and twittered a picture of his junk to an innocent Seattle woman when he intended it for a porn star?
Illegal? I guess not. Scandalous? You bet. He’s his legislative body’s problem (censure him or something), his party’s problem (Dems?), and his district’s problems (re-elect or vote out?).
As far as the GOP is concerned, they should have nothing to do with him. Issue a statement denouncing him as a lowlife. Media should drop him as a serious interview.
Reject this POS.

I do respect your’s and other’s honest opinions that we get above the fray. I guess because I’m an old soldier though, I also think there is virtue in the mindset that it’s fair if your opponent is doing it. (I never said I’d hold myself up as an example of a good Republican when I was one)
hawkdriver on June 5, 2011 at 12:54 PM
We all tend to think that people, just because of the high positions they occupy (or money they make) have “class.” This is a big mistake as we have discovered with Bill Clinton,Bernie Madoff, DSK, etal. There is also deep suspicion that the infamous Jack The Ripper may have been a member of the British Royal Family.
Kipling said:
The colonels lady
And Mrs O’Grady
are sisters under the skin”
Meaning that a rich British colonel’s wife and their Irish cleaning women (my ancestors) share the same emotions and hence the same possible perversions.
Stripped of all BS, Weiner is an EXHIBITIONIST who flashes internet pictures of his genitalia instead of direct flashing in parks. Exhibitionism involves “strong feelings of inadequacy, inferiority, and insecurity in personal relations. He usually comes from a strict home environment, has adopted puritanical attitudes toward sex, and is often overly attached to a domineering mother.”
As a gay NJ governor once did several years ago, with his wife by his side, Weiner should announce “I am an exhibitionist American and, although it may seem that way at times, the US House of Representatives is not a psychiatric ward. Consequently I am resigning my position and checking myself in for psychological observation.”

I’m with hawkdriver and others here. I think the longer this stays in the news the better. First, because it exposes the hypocrisy of the left, a reality more and more Americans seem to be getting wind of. Second because it weakens a particularly obnoxious leftist media whore – every day he’s talking about his certitude is a day he’s not railing about Republicans killing old people. Third is it weakens the overall Democratic lie machine – ever since little tony tweeted his junk I haven’t heard anything from the Mediscare crowd. Granted, it’s also drowned out the sensible arguments on the right, but all in all I think it’s advantageous to have the left playing defense for awhile.
And if he is eventually pushed to resign, all the better. Keep in mind, this guy had Presidential ambitions. Mayor of NYC was next, but he had his eye on the WH for sure. Every day before he comes clean makes that dream of his fade further into fantasy.

That’s an interesting question. I would add does Yfrog (ImageShack) have grounds to bring suit for the sender circumventing their enforcement of the terms of service. First it would need to determine that he photo violated their terms of service.
If it did, the consideration would whether it was a one-off or more frequently. The pic was in yfrog, but it may not stay there long and just be put in every time it is sent, if it was sent several times. If that was done, and it was deemed in violation, I suppose they could consider it rising to a level of “circumventing”.
I doubt they’d do it, but who knows.

I’m reading Breitbart’s book and there is a great retelling of how the Democrats turned Clinton’s infidelities back onto the Republicans.
Basically, with the help of the media, Democrats repeated the meme that Republicans are puritanical fascists, who want to be in everyone’s bedroom, making Clinton the innocent “victim” of this prudish inquisition.
Clinton was said to be more like the uber cool Europeans in matters of sexual mores (and it wasn’t then considered a racist comment for him to be called European.)
We must be aware of the constant worm turning done by Democrats, especially when they are guilty…
