Weiner’s office finally calls police — on reporter trying to interview him about Weinergate; Update: Lefty pundits turning on Weiner?

posted at 7:25 pm on June 2, 2011 by Allahpundit

Isn’t this the same guy who suggested, just 24 hours ago, that costly and time-consuming police action should be reserved only for serious criminal matters? Did I hallucinate that? Fast-forward to today and he’s got Capitol Police rushing to his office to hassle a reporter who’s still covering this story only because this tool refuses to ask the FBI to investigate the hacking.

Hey, remember last week when Weiner had a future in politics?

Kramer walked in to Weiner’s office, announced herself as being from CBS 2 in New York City and said she’d like to see the congressman. Those few words created quite the stir. Doors slammed and people pretended she wasn’t there.

Finally, brave press secretary David Arnold arrived…

After Kramer left Weiner’s office, his staff called the Capitol Police.

Police officers asked for identification. One cop told Kramer that if she went into Weiner’s office and didn’t leave if she was asked, she could be arrested.

“If you go to an office and are asked to leave, you can be placed under arrest,” Officer Michael Miller said.

Kramer responded, “But I wasn’t refusing to leave.”

He can’t claim that his staffers didn’t recognize her. Kramer’s been on the air in NYC for more than 20 years at CBS. She’s surely interviewed Weiner before. If they’re throwing her out of the office, it’s because they really, really don’t want to say anything more to the media that might keep this story alive. In which case, it only makes sense to … try to have a reporter arrested, thereby guaranteeing another full day of sensational coverage. Fancy thinkin’.

I think we’re finally ready to move past the “Weiner is horrible in a crisis” narrative and embark on the exciting new “Weiner has a barely disguised professional death wish” narrative instead. Speaking of which, the mother of the woman who received the now-legendary tweet joins the rest of America in wondering why he won’t just ‘fess up already, since the lingering mystery has left her daughter to twist in the wind:

The furious mom of the Seattle college coed at the center of Weinergate yesterday demanded that the cocky congressman come clean about the lewd photo.

“I’m really upset. I feel like he’s a person of power and influence, who can make a statement and make all this go away,” Carol Mizuguchi said, blasting Rep. Anthony Weiner for his continued snarky sidestepping.

“As her mother, I’m really upset,” Mizuguchi told The Post. “I’m pissed off at that.”

I know I speak for all of us when I say: Why is Mrs. Mizuguchi trying to distract America from income inequality?

Here’s the video from CBS; it’s comforting to know that we will indeed get a full week’s worth of blog content out of AW after all. And if you’re still hung up on yesterday’s fizzling “Yfrog defense” of Weiner, read this new analysis from techie George Gooding. There’s even less to the original defense than thought.

Update: Via Mediaite, for the second day in a row, Chris Matthews makes no secret of his skepticism about Weiner’s story. And at TNR, of all places, Jonathan Chait has a short but must-read post entitled “Anthony Weiner’s Skeeziness.” I don’t care if you watch the vid, but follow that last link at least. If he’s drawing headlines like that in famously liberal magazines, it really is all over.

I read an interesting take on his refusal to call authorities that I didn’t think about before; if he gives false information or reporting a crime that didn’t really happen, he is committing a crime himself.

Sure. He’d have to state definitively that he didn’t post it for it to be a hack and therefore a crime. So it’s a no-brainer for him *not* to call them in, if he really did it.

Polipundit observed that Weiner probably thought the MSM would pick up the “prank” meme and say, “Nothing here, move along.”

Weiner could then claim it was just the wingnuts at Breitbart, Fox, and the NY Post that were driving the story. But Weiner had no idea the MSM wuld actually pick this up and start looking at it critically as a real news story. After all, how often have they done that to a Dem caught in a sex scandal?

Weiner has no idea what to do without MSM cover.

What is really amazing is that we’ve no one on the Pubbies side saying “We’ve got bigger things to worry about than a depraved Congressman from New York.” For God’s sake, our women Pubbies have more true grit and fortitude: Bachmann, Halley, Palen . . . than any male Pubbie presidential candidate. Makes one wonder, don’t it!!!

As for “Horshack the adult”, maybe he should call Vinnie Barbarino in to deflect attention. You know nothing good would come of a match of a 40ish Jew boy, marrying a Muslim woman, with the master of ceremonies being Bill “It-depends- on-what-the-definition-of-‘is’,-is.” And “I did not have sex with that woman!” Clinton and the matchmaker being Hillary. I don’t think so. He has a better chance of getting reelected as a Congressman. And, it won’t be the NY GOP that finishes Weiner as a mayoral candidate, it’ll be the NY Democrats. They’re licking their chops right now. I think he’s finished as a mayoral candidate. ESPECIALLY after calling the cops on a local reporter. If he tried to have someone from CNN or FOX arrested, it wouldn’t generate as much local interest as calling the cops on a local reporter. I doubt the CBS NY affiliate is going to let this go. The papers will be all over it. High drama in NYC….
