Hillary’s Dubious Diplomatic Skills

posted at 4:20 pm on June 2, 2011 by Jazz Shaw

Ever since the 2008 Democratic primary battle there have been certain people who still wish there were some way to turn back time and put Hillary Clinton in as the winner. (And after more than two years of disappointments for some on the far Left, their numbers may be growing, including some members of my family.) But even still, Secretary of State is a very important, high profile position where a figure such as Clinton could flex her diplomatic muscle. So how is she doing?

While she consistently gets rave reviews from some corners, her appearance this week in Pakistan might cast some doubt on the evaluation of those skills. Ever since Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai demanded an end to air strikes on civilian residences in his country to reduce collateral damage, tensions have been mounting. Clinton’s response – a video clip of which is now making the rounds of every cable news show – could certainly have been phrased a bit better.

“We’re going to continue to do everything we can to express our deep regret when a terrible incident occurs, and civilians are injured or killed,” said Clinton.

Seriously? This did not appear to be an ad hoc response to a reporter’s question, but part of the prepared speech. Somebody had to write and approve that text. Why not just come out and say, “While we know you’re upset, I want to assure you that as we continue to blow up women and children in your country we’re going to feel really, really bad about it.”

Look, I can see where Clinton was trying to go with this, and she does make a valid point. In any military activity such as the current battles in Afghanistan, where air strikes from war planes and drones in remote areas are a key component of the overall strategy, regrettable incidents like the one in question are going to happen from time to time no matter how careful we are. Recognizing that fact and educating people about the realities, both at home and abroad, is the right thing to do. But not just at that particular place and time.

A better approach might have been to simply stress the fact that we already take extensive precautions to avoid such incidents, and after the recent events, are reviewing procedures which will further limit them in the future. The situation is tense enough over there right now and we can’t afford any rookie mistakes fanning the flames further. Otherwise our Secretary of State might find herself actually ducking and weaving on the tarmac as she thought she did in Bosnia.

How about getting selected by Obama to be SOS and not being fired by Obama as SOS???
Or she has gathered more material for a few new books after she retires as SOS?

Can’t she just claim that Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize and be done with it?

I’ve been assuming that the mission of the Clinton State Department has been to make Obama look like a buffoon community organizer utterly unprepared for that 3am phone call. Viewed from that perspective, she’s assembled a string of successful betrayal that would make Lucrezia Borgia green with envy. However, if she doesn’t cash in on that success by resigning and declaring a primary challenge against Obama, then I’ll have to conclude that she’s the buffon.

She successfully coerced Honduras into taking back Zelaya.

Never mind that he was attempting to violate the Honduran constitution and install himself as permanent dictator, never mind that the Honduran congress and supreme court approved of his ouster. Hillary obviously knows better than the people of Honduras, their elected representatives, their constitution, and their legal system.

Hillary insisted that Honduras take Zelaya back, and now he’s back.

“Success,” progressive style.

With Elena Kagan and Sonia Soda-My-Oar, I think I’m beginning to see a pattern.

The Reasonable Man on June 2, 2011 at 4:55 PM

She was not qualified to become SOS in the first place, and neither was she qualified to be president. Her credentials were all a creation of the old liberal media, -remember ‘the smartest woman in the world’? I guess she absorbed political experience simply by hanging around with her husband all those years. By that measure, Dick Morris was just as qualified.

The liberals do this all the time, whether it’s the idiot little Bammie or Hillary, there’s nothing there, but they are made into geniuses by the media machine.

“Smartest” woman in the world + the “smartest” man in the world = incomprehensible foreign policy for the United States of America = total failure.

joe btfsplk on June 2, 2011 at 5:06 PM

Maybe she could say something like: “Although the civilian casualties are regrettable and we do everything we can to prevent them, the ones we cannot must be weighed against the casualties caused by the people we are fighting and stopping by these operations. Such as:” and then list just a few of the Islamist attacks in Packistan such as this one or this one.

The Islamists we’re fighting against will cause more deaths if left alone than the rare off-target missile or bomb.

I continue to express my deep regret at the terrible shortage of Botox which leads to disgusting pictures of Sec. Clinton.

The Reasonable Man on June 2, 2011 at 5:49 PM

Actually I will give Hillary a pass as SOS. She basically has to toe the line of the policies of the idiot in chief. I think her biggest mistake was taking the job in the first place. She would have been better off staying in the Senate and primary him now.

karenhasfreedom on June 2, 2011 at 6:13 PM

At least she didn’t start with “Let me be clear”

MikeA on June 2, 2011 at 6:15 PM

These people, they just say stuff. They know Karzai is going to have to eat it and they know that NPR will still fawn over them and no Cindy Sheehans will be camping outside their houses and there will be no street theater with crappy papier-mache effigies of them. There are no constraints because they won’t be called on it in the Washington Post. They got theirs. As far as they’re concerned the US can go rot and forget about those stinkholes in the Middle East. The rottener the world gets the more valuable their life-long security details and book deals and golden benefits become. It’s not the USA anymore.

Agreed total lack of management or negotiation skills that are rubbing off on the State Department – at least in the area of Protocol.

Remember, when another Country’s National Anthem is played you shut up, stand straight, and show a modicum (cause that’s all he has left for anyone) of respect for our allies

Also, we did not see it, but I am sure it did not happen though. The Queen is the one World Leader he can bow to
