Video: The greatest music video ever?

posted at 8:49 pm on June 1, 2011 by Allahpundit

That’s Roger Ebert’s verdict, and for once he might be right. You don’t need to know the backstory on this to appreciate it but you’ll enjoy it more if you do. Quite simply, Grand Rapids ended up on some magazine’s list of “America’s Dying Cities”; the locals took exception and set out to prove that they’re still very much alive, and this is the result — 10 minutes, featuring a cast of 5,000, paid for with $40,000 that the director and a colleague raised themselves. Displays of civic pride are often rote and occasionally schmaltzy, but this one manages to be genuinely touching. It’s a time capsule from the heartland, certainly the most American music video ever made whether or not it’s the greatest. You’ll enjoy every minute. And trust me, you’ll want to watch every minute, if only to marvel at the coordination.

One take, guys. One. Take.

Amway, Amway owns that town. Calling Grand Rapids one of America’s Dying Cities iss like calling Bentonville, AR a dying city… If anything it is a jewel in MI’s rotted crown but a jewel nonetheless.

Grand Rapids is a great town filled with great people, and I love that they didn’t accept being labeled as a “dying town”. Here’s hoping that the attitude that created this video continues and spreads within the town and beyond.

Baxter Greene on June 1, 2011 at 9:30 PM

Nice video.

According to Wikipedia, Grand Rapids lost just under 5% of its population.

Also..

Like the surrounding counties, the Grand Rapids area has traditionally been a stronghold for the Republican Party, but the city itself leans Democratic.

The city is the center of the 3rd Congressional District, represented by Republican Justin Amash. Former President Gerald Ford represented the district from 1949 to 1973. Ford died on December 26, 2006 at his home in Rancho Mirage, California, and was buried on the grounds of his Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids on January 3, 2007.

The Grand Rapids area (including the suburbs of Ada, East Grand Rapids, Wyoming, Grandville, Walker, and Kentwood) also serves as the home business base of one of the largest political donors to the national Republican Party, Richard and Helen DeVos, and also to the former Ambassador to Italy, Peter Secchia.

Though the Grand Rapids area has a reputation for conservatism, the city proper tends to elect Democrats. Both of its representatives in the Michigan State House of Representatives are Democrats, and in the five most recent presidential elections Democratic candidates Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry, and Barack Obama won a majority or plurality of votes in the city of Grand Rapids. The last Republican candidate for President to carry the city was George H.W. Bush in 1988.

9. Flint, Michigan
8. South Bend, Indiana
7. Detroit, Michigan
6. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
5. Cleveland, Ohio
4. Rochester, New York
3. Hialeah, Florida

I know I’m going to get into trouble here….but inspirational music (it is very good!!) doesn’t change our future! Resolve, self-denial, moral leadership, citizens who commit themselves to responsible lives…ie, marriage, family, duty, etc…. that will turn America around. Great song, great video, great message. But how Great are our principles?

GR is having a very tough time, SG. Our annual 100+ person family reunion will be in that area this July and I just got back from a golf weekend with a bunch of family and friends in the Canadian Lakes area about an hour north of GR. I love western Michigan, but it’s hard for them now.

I love the video and all of the effort they put into showing pride in their little river town. May the people of Michigan strangle the beast that terrorizes them…soon.

Or maybe seeing 10 minutes of the America that I was brought up believing in…

… instead of what the Left, Democrats, and especially the current Administration is “changing” us into with their Marxist/Socialist policies.

Maybe this explains last November to a tee…

That was great–touching and exuberant at the same time.

From their YouTube:

This video was created as an official response to the Newsweek article calling Grand Rapids a “dying city.” We disagreed strongly, and wanted to create a video that encompasses the passion and energy we all feel is growing exponentially, in this great city. We felt Don McLean’s “American Pie,” a song about death, was in the end, triumphant and filled to the brim with life and hope.” – Rob Bliss, Director & Executive Producer
