Breaking: Kloppenburg concedes; Update: Humpbot time

posted at 12:12 pm on May 31, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

JoAnn Kloppenburg finally conceded the Wisconsin Supreme Court race this morning, announcing that she had called incumbent Justice David Prosser to congratulate him on his win.  She had until today to file a challenge to the recount, which gained her 312 votes but still left her slightly over 7,000 votes behind Prosser in the hotly-contested election:

Candidate JoAnne Kloppenburg has accepted the results of the recount in her state Supreme Court race and conceded to incumbent Justice David Prosser.

Prosser originally won the election by 7,316 votes, out of 1.5 million cast. Kloppenburg requested a statewide recount through, which she picked up 312 votes.

She had until Tuesday to decide whether to challenge the results in court.Prosser’s campaign has said there’s no basis for a challenge and it’s time to move on.

The news conference is still ongoing, although the TMJ4 live stream provided by the Journal-Sentinel has the sound turned off. Stay tuned for more …

Update: Again, I missed her statement, but 620TMJ has a couple of quotes:

Kloppenburg asked for a statewide recount after preliminary figures had her losing to Prosser.

“Wisconsin law makes it clear that even when such a record has been developed in such a recount, the threshold for a court to overturn such an election is appropriately very high,” said Kloppenburg.

“It would serve no purpose to bring a suit with insufficient legal basis.”

Why not?  The recount had insufficient common-sense basis, and Kloppenburg didn’t hesitate to spend taxpayer money on a fruitless attempt to reverse a 7316-vote deficit.  Maybe it would serve no purpose because Kloppenburg would foot the bill in an election challenge — and because she might want to run for office again in a state that would get pretty angry over a nonsensical challenge to a 7000-vote margin loss.

Update: After consulting with Allahpundit, the time has come, my friends:

I don’t have a citation handy, (Steve Eggleston probably has the best handle on this – we’ll have to wait till he chimes in,) but well into 10′s of thousands of dollars, last I knew.

One poster here thought it was a:

…free recount….

astonerii on May 31, 2011 at 12:16 PM

But nothing is free. There is a cost to everything, borne by someone. In this case, the good taxpayers of the state (with possibly some fed money thrown in) paid the bill for her egotistic attempt to invalidate a result she didn’t like.

Now, somebody please capture that disgusting woman and send her back to the home.

She lost the election but at least she’s not attractive.

Kenosha Kid on May 31, 2011 at 1:56 PM

There never should have been a recount. It was a waste of time and resources. Liberal are the most wasteful, uncaring and unethical people in the world. It’s time we stopped bending over backwards to placate their every whim. Perhaps a bill for the recount should be sent to Kloppenburg’s campaign. I’m sure there is still plenty of money in her war chest to cover it.

Mcguyver on May 31, 2011 at 4:30 PM

Don’t worry, crr6, there’s hope yet!

Last Monday, May 23rd, Wisconsin’s Government Accountability Board (G.A.B.), the state’s top election agency, officially certified [PDF] the controversial results of the extraordinarily close April 5th statewide Supreme Court election and its subsequent “recount.”

However, as The BRAD BLOG has learned, the agency certified those results without reviewing hundreds of official exhibits documenting wholesale ballot irregularities, on-the-record objections from the attorneys of the candidate who filed for the “recount,” and thousands of pages of official transcripts and minutes documenting the entire “recount” process from the election’s most controversial county.

Even more alarming, the agency doesn’t even yet have a copy of the hundreds, if not thousands, of pages which make up the official minutes documenting the nearly month-long “recount” from Waukesha County — the last of the state’s 72 counties to complete its count, and by far the most controversial county following the late discovery there of some 14,000 votes not included in the county’s original Election Night results.

http://www.bradblog.com/?p=8545

Anyone know anything about this blog? I’d never heard of it before.

When Kloppy learned that she had to fund anymore recounts, her answer to the question, “Are you going to continue your challenge?” came a hell of a lot faster than her answer on whether or not she thought she won the election.

Cindy Munford on May 31, 2011 at 5:08 PM

Cindy,

Do the Malwarebytes thingy that docflash suggest, but download it onto a flashdrive (like you did the first fix) and execute it in Safe Mode. Those Fake Warning trojans are insidious. As I mentioned before, they block your anti-virus ware, prohibit/block a return to a prior set point, and sometimes even force your firewalls into an open mode (Bad,bad, bad!!!). Even using the removal tools sometimes misses the links left behind that continue the trouble you are having.

I just did a google and see that there are dozens of these in the wild right now that are relatively new. Perhaps the tool suggested above can ID them for you so you can zero in on the specific Fakes.

The desk top is black, I can get online at the start button/all programs. I’m afraid to get too crazy and erase my husbands files. Even though it says they are empty, a description of the the trojan said that the stuff is still really there. I would love to try Malwarebytes but it is asking to send me the free download in an email. Is that normal? I don’t trust anything anymore.

Cindy Munford on May 31, 2011 at 5:54 PM

And now the bad news – the Government “Accountability” Board, specifically the 6 hack (ex-)Lawgivers-In-Black Doyle appointed as the decision-makers by Jim “Craps” Doyle (WEAC-HoChunk-For Sale) after Doyle corrupted the previous State Elections Board, approved recalls for the other 3 Republican Senators while doing nothing on the pending recalls for the 3 Fleebagging Rats). The GAB is under a court-modified Friday deadline to either call for elections for 5 of the Republicans and the 3 Democrats or declare the recall petitions insufficient.

Steve Eggleston on May 31, 2011 at 6:02 PM

CindyM: the ‘email’ offer is absolutely not normal ~ and suspicious. Trust nothing except a direct download [ http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php ]

Cindy along with everything already mentioned if possible (I believe you moved to your laptop) look into UBCD for Windows.

You can download/create a CD on your laptop and use it to boot into Windows on your problem computer. It is a little slow, and takes some knowledge of windows to create/run, but I have had to use that on friends/family computers before to get the HD to boot properly.
