Video: DNC chief announces bold, brilliant plan to save Medicare before it implodes

posted at 4:45 pm on May 30, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via Andrew Stiles, it’s an easy peasy three-step process. Step one: Shamelessly duck any questions about a Democratic reform plan by quickly changing the subject to how Paul Ryan wants to kill your grandma. As you’re about to see, Debbie’s got that one down pat. Step two: Ride the wave of Mediscaring to a new congressional majority next fall, hinting all the way that we can pay for the program unto infinity by hiking taxes on the inexhaustible rich and trimming Pentagon waste. Step three: Wait a few years for Medicare to go broke and then, when grandmas really can’t get treatment, blame Paul Ryan and the Republicans for not proposing a more attractive plan back when there was still time to do something before the crisis hit. It’s all the GOP’s fault. Right, Bill Clinton?

Actually, maybe we should be grateful that DWS doesn’t have a plan. Consider the alternative.

Deb presents the brief version of the Democrat solution.
A couple of days ago, Ed showed us the fuller Democrat strategy on entitlement reform:
1) Declare that the Republican plan will kill people.
2) Denounce the demagoguery you just demonstrated.
3) Offer no plans of your own.
4) Feign offense when challenged on strategy.
5) Walk off in a huff without doing anything.

Americans are spending almost 2 1/2 times more on health care per person than other advanced nations.

Given that most of that is spent on stretching out the lives of those with only 6 months left, and what’s left is then inflated by that runaway demand…

Do I have this right? The GOP/Ryan plan will throw the under 55 crowd to the wolves, but the Dems ‘plan’ will not go bankrupt. Shoot, even Harry Smith, one of the most Beta Democrat hacks that exists is reading the writing on the wall. The Democrats must be collectively insane, especially to pick such a dunce to be their DNC Chairperson.

True. I think the root of the problem is that we, as a culture, are so utterly terrified of death that no price is too high to pay in order to delay the inevitable.

morganfrost on May 30, 2011 at 5:25 PM

The Democrat Socialists are beating this “End of Medicare as we know it” phrase, talking point, bumper sticker slogan into the ground. I heard Rachel Maddow say said phrase no less than 15 times in under three minutes the other night. This just goes to show how in lockstep this party of Communists really is. THE SAME PHRASE over and over and over until the less intelligent have soaked it up before a vote. I’d like to see a mediasource like HotAir or another good website to see how many times this slogan has been said by lefties to lefties on TV over the last few weeks. It’s gotta be in the tens of thousands. That would make a good ad against the Dems. A full minute of all of them saying the same propagandistic phrase over and over and show how they attempt to brainwash. People would vote against them just so as not to appear to be lemmings.

The end of Medicare as we know it is pretty much a good idea seeing how it will be insolvent in ten years? Was Obamalinsky killing “Medicare as we know it” when he diverted $500million from Medicare to Obamalinsky Care? How are they selling this crap sandwich now?

And yes, this Communistic “useful idiot” Schultz, she really is the gift that keeps on giving. She is a Pelosi clone, a trainee if you will. Unfortunately for her and Nazi Pelosi, there’s this thing now called the internet, and blogs where people can point out your laughable lies all day long, and YouTube so their idiocy can be recycled as needed for campaign ads and preserved as history until forever. Welcome to the Brave New World commies…..

Roy Rogers on May 30, 2011 at 5:46 PM

I thought this was an awfully good quote from the JPost that pretty much sums up the Dims. Fait Accompli…no matter what, with the “media” providing cover fire and prepping the battlefield with mythologies, eventually it turns into, we won, you lost, now you have to take care of the worker’s paradise that we’ve built

Obama’s leadership model is the model of subversive leadership. Subversive leaders in democracies do not tell their citizens where they wish to lead their societies. They hide their goals from their citizens, because they understand that their citizens do not share their goals. Then once they achieve their unspoken goals, they present their people with a fait accompli and announce that only they are competent to shepherd their societies through the radical shift they undertook behind the public’s back.

And you thought I was going to say …

fred5678 on May 30, 2011 at 6:06 PM

This is worth reprising from yesterday’s Headlines post. Refute DW-S’s lies with facts. They are irrefutable.

None of what DW-S claimed in that Face the Nation interview is true. In fact, she keeps touting absolute falsehoods, and no one is calling her on these blatant mischaracterizations (lies).

Yuval Levin at “The Corner” explains:

None of this is true, and it’s especially important to understand that the latter parts are not true. The Ryan plan would not leave future seniors to find insurance on their own in the private market, and it wouldn’t allow insurance companies to deny coverage or drop people for pre-existing conditions. It would continue the very reasonable practice of treating senior citizens differently than younger Americans when it comes to health care—giving them guaranteed coverage subsidized by the government at a level that would make it affordable for them. Seniors would be given a menu of approved options to choose from, all of which would be required to accept all Medicare recipients, to offer a plan with at least the level of coverage required by the Federal Employee Health Benefit Plan, and to charge all seniors of the same age the same rates. The premium support benefit that seniors get would be adjusted based on their age, their health, and their wealth (and the lowest-income seniors would get an additional pre-funded Medical Savings Account to cover remaining out-of-pocket costs).

So rather than having a board of 15 experts decide what treatments would be covered and what price controls would be imposed and leaving seniors with no options while still failing to prevent Medicare’s looming insolvency—which is roughly the Democratic plan—the Republican approach would let seniors decide on their insurance plan from a range of guaranteed options and provide them with a subsidy to help fund that plan, with those most in need getting the most help.

They would be buying insurance with the premium-support payment, not paying directly for coverage, so the idea that if you got sick you would “run out of the government voucher and then you run out of your own money, you’re left to scrape together charity care, go without care, die sooner” (as Secretary Sebelius put it a few weeks ago) is patent nonsense. Seniors would choose a plan—a plan with limits on out-of-pocket expenses and with no exclusions for pre-existing conditions, etc.—and if they got sick they would be insured. And insurers would have the freedom to design these plans (and work with providers to design new approaches to delivering medical services) in ways that would make the plans most attractive to consumers—i.e. in ways that would better provide what seniors want at lower costs. And (unlike today’s Medicare Advantage, for instance) they would not have to do this under the shadow of the existing fee-for-service Medicare system, with its enormous incentives for inefficiency and waste. This approach would therefore, as the actuary of the Medicare program in Obama’s own HHS put it earlier this year, have a better chance than the Democrats’ approach of reducing health-care costs while sustaining quality, affordable coverage, which is the name of the game.

These are facts that bear repeating, and that should be repeated often enough that they occur even to CBS reporters confronted with Debbie Wasserman-Shultz on a Sunday morning.
The coverage promised to future seniors, those below 55, is the same menu offering that DW-S enjoys as a congresswoman. Is DW-S unwilling to extend to seniors a benefit that she herself enjoys?

Simply put, the Ryan plan is better than “Medicare as we know it” because it will provide choices to subscribers and meet their specific needs; it will avoid price controls and rationing; and it avoids the diktats of faceless bureaucrats, allowing patients to interface better with their health providers and health insurers.

What’s not to like about that, Little Debbie? Don’t you want seniors to enjoy the same choices that you have? Don’t you think that your elders have more common sense that you give them credit for having?

What happens when the well runs dry, Debbie, and everyone is the loser…not just you, putz.

Instead of arguing over different ways for government to pay for and control our health care system (which is the only argument being made) how about we start figuring out how to correct the cause of the skyrocketing costs of our health care system. That cause is government regulation and control of the system.
What we need is to introduce competitive, free market reforms so that we can afford to pay for our own health care. Right now our grandchildren are paying (will pay, actually) for what we’re consuming now.

I’m just going to refer to DWS as Fat A$$ and laugh at everything she says.

Let’s not overlook their tactics. They could well prove to be effective

And the dems and many repubs will vote for her in droves even if their children and grandchildren are going to have to pay %75 of their income to pay for their parent’s and grandparent’s Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security benefits.

The “greed” of “big Oil” and “Wall Street” pales in comparison to democrats willing to throw their offspring under the bus.

It occurs to me that in order to win this argument we need to start with the basics.

We need commercials that spell out the problem clearly. Maybe billboards with a count down clock to the bankruptcy of Medicare.

We must first establish that there is a problem that needs solving. We must prove the urgency of the problem.

Democrats say there is no problem, but that is a lie.

Expose the lie, let it sink in deep, that Democrats are willing to lie about something so important.

Then tell them Republicans are trying to fix things. And ask for their help and support.

First people must see the problem. They must see who is telling them the truth and who is not.

Once the facts are established the specifics of the plan will sell themselves.

Ah, so that’s the person whose picture I saw under Webster’s entry for “vapid”.

It all makes sense now.
