Quotes of the day

posted at 8:30 pm on May 30, 2011 by Allahpundit

“‘I’m sure at some point I will be going to Iowa,’ Palin said during a visit to Fort McHenry in Baltimore. ‘At some point.’…

“Palin and her family were mobbed by television cameras after her arrival at Fort McHenry, the fort that famously defended Baltimore from a British assault during the War of 1812. The battle served as the inspiration for the national anthem, Francis Scott Key’s ‘Star Spangled Banner.’…

“While she declared herself ‘satisfied” with the Republicans who are already in the process of campaigning, she said the field ‘is going to change up a lot.’”

***
“Palin gets mad when the ‘media’ cover bloopers she makes, like her coinage of the word ‘refudiate.’ The press–as distinct from the partisan media–-incorporates these errors into its lack-of-readiness narrative. Palin does not make a distinction between a political press corps that thinks she’s not ready and a tribal belief among some Democrats that she is not smart. She does not distinguish TMZ from PBS. In her world, Bill Maher is Katie Couric. The New York Times is Daily Kos. Palin seems to genuinely believe that the press is unremittingly hostile to her. She believes that her children have been subject to humiliation and harassment.

“Palin says that the people who cover politics for a living have a negative disposition toward her because of her faith. Plenty of evangelical candidates are given a fair shake by the press. Mike Huckabee’s candidacy was boosted because the press corps actively liked him. Tim Pawlenty holds nearly every position ascribed to Sarah Palin and is not mistreated by the press, nor is he ridiculed for his beliefs. And the media that allegedly mistreats Palin somehow remains obsessed with anything she does. Every utterance is a national news story; every tweet triggers news cycles full of analysis. Palin has redefined what it means to get ‘free media.’

“On the campaign trail, she can be incredibly compelling. She forges an emotional bond with her audience, the type of bond that Mitt Romney has not managed to achieve. But until Palin figures out how to cross the plausibility threshold among the press and the Republican elites, she will remain at a disadvantage.”

***
“Is she giving a press conference today? or giving another interview? I don’t think so. She can’t – or at least as far as I know she can’t. She works for Fox, and just as with any employee or someone on contract with another network, she is contractually obliged NOT to speak to others. For instance, when I was in Haiti, I could not interview CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta or when I want to talk politics, I can’t interview CNN’s Donna Brazile. They work for another network. As far as I know, her contract is like every other media contract and that means it would be a breach of contract to speak to other media outlets. ** I have not seen her contract but assume it is the routine media contract. She is in an unusual situation in that we in the media have made her into a media topic by virtue of us always talking about her. She, of course, contributes to that intense interest by painting a bus and taking a tour and taking a tour to historic sites.

Where is her bus tour going ? You got me. My producer who talked to someone who works with her in order to set up the interview told me last night that he would not tell her. We were told to check their website for any information they are releasing. He said they don’t want the media following them and that includes us. Well…with the intense interest in her by everyone (almost everyone) in the media, that is, I suspect, going to happen. The media will probably be in hot pursuit.”

Delicious. All of the “important people” have no idea what the hell is going on. To me, as far as Sarah Palin goes, that’s a feature. Not a bug.

Palin’s wrong that this has to do with her faith. Certainly the media hates Christian Republicans, but that’s not why they try to destroy her. It’s because of the threat she poses to the Democrat Party. Huckster poses no threat, so he’s left alone. Pawlenty doesn’t generate any enthusiasm amongst the conservative base, so the drive-bys don’t give a crap what he says or does.

This is a hoot! Why should Palin care about a media that
covered up for the socialist/marxist/communist Obama; before the election and after?

Why should she have discourse with a media who in essence
called her daughter a whore and Palin an accessory to murder? All the lies and the ridicule. The prop up of
the liberal socialist agenda. Why would anyone have use
for them?

Palin is much more gracious than I – I would spit in their
eye while telling them that THEY ARE traitors to our great country!

The other “weak tea” candidates only wish they had the charged excitement that Sarah Palin generates. Huckabee saw the handwriting on the wall. There wasn’t as much interest in him as the talking heads would have you believe. Mitch Daniels probably would have fizzled too. Mitt Romney is the darling of the media and stodgy, Republican elite. Ho hum. And Pawlenty can’t get no respect.

I can hear those candidates who plan to announce their candidacy this coming week or so – “I wish that bus would disappear, how am I going to get any coverage when everyone is talking about Palin?”

We saw what happened to the so-called Tea Party candidates that went to Washington this past January. They ran right into the Old Guard Republican stalwarts where nothing gets done. There just weren’t enough conservatives elected. Some of those who claimed to be quickly started planning their re-elections and talking to lobbists.

Now, we want a full house cleaning and a message sent loud and clear to both the Democrats and mainline Republicans who haven’t any backbone.

But until Palin figures out how to cross the plausibility threshold among the press and the Republican elites, she will remain at a disadvantage.

Of course, one could have said the same thing about Reagan in 1979. The Republican establishment hated him, the “staunch conservatives” of California hated him, the press hated him. Only after his landslide win in the second term did the “Republican elites” rush to pretend that he was one of their own (and they still do to this day). Same with the press. Reagan was ridiculed every day in the press until the second term. They managed to stifle themselves until Iran Contra came up, then they started all over again.

“The Press” in the US is busy putting itself out of business. A decreasing portion of the population actually care what the press thinks about Sarah Palin or anyone else, for that matter. And as far as the “Republican elites”, well, they can choke on a cucumber sandwich for all I care.

crosspatch on May 30, 2011 at 8:56 PM

My theory on Sarah’s strategy. And I have no inside information here:

She keeps this bus tour going through mid July. She makes all of the strategic stops in the strategic states. She does her impromptu stops, does retail politicing, a true “listening” tour as opposed to Hillary’s fake tour when Hillary carpetbagged NY for a Senate seat. Sarah blogs her thoughts, ideas, mentions tales about the everyday people she meets while out and about each day. She will parlay into why whatever their circumstance is, why the current policies in DC are making is worse for these particular every day citizens, etc. etc.

She will visit enough historical sites to then weave the story around our roots and founding fathers, etc. Talk about the basis for why our country has exceptionalism, etc etc.

Lots to do, so little time. Presto bingo, we are in mid July and TIME to announce.

Meanwhile, the other candidates are pretty much ignored during this time where Sarah is not quite ready to announce.

What say y’all?

karenhasfreedom on May 30, 2011 at 8:56 PM

I think the talking point issued now is how this bus tour is being funded.

karenhasfreedom on May 30, 2011 at 8:46 PM

the left makes no sense either she is an idiot that can’t tie her shoes or she is an evil mastermind using complex PAC funding requirements to pay for her family vaction.

I guess they never thought that the paint job on the RV probably cost more than the entire tour

unseen on May 30, 2011 at 8:57 PM

That begs the question: Why is Sarah Palin able to legally use SarahPAC funds to fund her bus tour?

I realize SarahPAC funds can be used to fund “travel expenses” for candidates or for political purposes.

Isn’t Palin really appearing to act like a tourist?

Having said that: Could the writing on the side and back of her bus be the loophole that indicates she is taking the bus tour for political purposes?

technopeasant on May 30, 2011 at 8:57 PM

Carl Cameron, in an article at FNC, answers this question quite well.

Second, this trip is a production of her “SarahPAC” political action committee, which was created to help Palin raise and spend money advancing conservative ideas and other conservative candidates. That’s not haphazard organization, that’s abiding by laws that allow her to move around the country via her PAC as long as she is not too blatant about eyeing the presidency for herself.

Shutup is the usual response from Palians to those who won’t genuflect for their hero. Good luck with that reporting thing.

What of she paid for the bus and the pac paid for the ad on the side?

The bus is actually the family RV if I remember right.

Wonder if they are going to see the entire country. You know, Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, Little Big Horn, Yosemite, etc. If she gets to the SF Bay area, there is a little war memorial in Cupertino I believe might move her.

http://cupertinoveteransmemorial.org/

The statue at the center of the memorial is close to the hearts of the locals. Scroll down about half the page of the web site and read about it.

She does not distinguish TMZ from PBS. In her world, Bill Maher is Katie Couric. The New York Times is Daily Kos. Palin seems to genuinely believe that the press is unremittingly hostile to her. She believes that her children have been subject to humiliation and harassment.

You know, for the life of me, I have no idea why she might think that. It’s not like she was mocked mercilessly by comedians and political pundits in the MSM alike. You’d think some lefty journalist had rented the house next to hers in order to monitor the family and their activities. Nope, she’d have a point if any of those things had happened.

She spoke to the media today. She can do press conferences, but not appear on other network shows for one-on-one exclusives. It’s definitely a limitation she would need to get out of to run a real campaign.

The staff at the SAC Museum up north of me have whispered of all kinds of various hauntings. Hearing plane/ground crew voices, doors closing on their own, phantom pilots, and more.

Though the spookiest tale is of a radio coming alive with a plane requesting landing clearance, which a WW2 veteran replied to and talked to the ground. The plane was soon located afterwards – on display in the main hanger.

Sounds like most of the places she is visiting are hallowed ground to most Americans. Loving this country and celebrating it speaks louder than saying it. Normal people will get this on a gut level.

A. Make up “what Sarah Palin thinks”

B. Criticize the made up things.

C. Congratulate self.

which explains to me why they hate her. They are told she is an idiot. Yet she continues to succeed and prosper and run circles around others. which because they believe the lie of her being stupid they can not resolve the two worlds. Either she is an idiot or she isn’t. by not being able to resolve that answer the human being turns to hate and envy to explain the disconnect away..

you hate what you can not understand.
