DNC chair: Republicans think illegal immigration should be illegal, or something

posted at 4:00 pm on May 29, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

This is what happens when political correctness distorts clear and descriptive language. Immigration reform activists have insisted on removing the phrase illegal immigration from the political lexicon, despite the fact that the term is both accurate and objective. Once that happens, it’s easy for the weak-minded to forget that we have a fairly generous legal immigration system that illegal immigrants bypassed and violated on their entry into this country. And by “the weak-minded,” I mean Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, as Doug Powers notes at the Boss Emeritus’ site:

I think the president was clearly articulating that his position — the Democrats position — is that we need comprehensive immigration reform. We have 12 million undocumented immigrants in this country that are part of the backbone of our economy. And that is not only a reality but a necessity. And that it would be harmful if — the Republican solution that I’ve seen in the last three years is that we should just pack them all up and ship them back to their own countries, and that in fact it should be a crime and we should arrest them all. I mean that was the legislation that Jim Sensenbrenner advanced a couple of years ago.

Oh noes! Republicans want to make a crime … a crime crime! Maybe Rep. Wasserman-Schultz should familiarize herself with the law before attempting to change it, and certainly before she attempts to demagogue Republicans on the issue of crime and punishment as well as immigration.

AshleyTKing will you be taking in some of the 100,000 illegals in California prisons upon their release? How about some of the 250k to 300k that have been imprisoned in the United States.

Just wondering,

/

Pssst incarceration is very expensive if you did not know it. Likely in the area of 50 k a year for each inmate.

With 9% unemployment (just reported, not the “real” unemployment percentage) in America, which border does an American have to cross to get a job?

Our job creation is under assault by regulations, inflation, and taxation. Capital is demand for labor. Capital is wages for workers. We have an anti-capitalist, anti-drilling administration.

Yes, America lovers hard workers, but America is also built on the rule of law. Follow the rules. It’s really just that simple.

ButterflyDragon on May 29, 2011 at 5:12 PM

Well, if there is a large demand for unskilled labor, and we set that visa at a too low level, we get what we have now along the border. Laws have to reflect reality for the laws to work.

Obama refers to illegal aliens (the correct term) as undocumented workers.

Basilsbest on May 29, 2011 at 5:29 PM

Why is it so painfully obvious that the entire illegal immigration canard is all about swelling the ranks of democrat voter roles, subverting the rule of law, destroying the concept of national sovereignty, placating La Raza types, carping about voter ID, and railing against those )AKA mean-spirited Republicans) who have the audacity to enforce the law? This insanity, pushed by the DNC and LSM (I know, same thing) is hell bent on creating the same type of third world failed nacro state that is Mexico. Not only do these Libtards hate their country, they are as subversive an anti-American group that has ever existed. We will fail as a country from the inside, enough already.

AshleyTKing on May 29, 2011 at 5:45 PM

How many of these open border advocates and all the rest of those who think there is nothing illegal about illegal immigration would be willing to allow just about anybody, perhaps a group of thugs, or several dozen MS-13 members, or four dozen penniless East Asians, or Pakistanis, or anyone, for that matter, to just walk into their homes and declare that they belong there…and the present owners have to accept it…no complaints, none, and provide all food and beverages and other incidentals these home invaders demand, when they demand it?

And, of course, not go to the police to regain their homes nor enjoin the Courts to help them reclaim their own homes.

This is illegal immigration today in a nutshell.

Our home is being invaded and the Left sees nothing wrong with it.

If they favor illegal immigration so much, then require them to open their homes without pre-conditions to anyone who wants a place to crash for the night or for several years or longer, with everything they demand provided, gratis.

coldwarrior on May 29, 2011 at 5:46 PM

Except illegal immigrants are, by definition, criminals. But you refuse to believe that.

Make up your mind. If they are criminals they should be deported; except for those – they’re okay.

You know, we don’t really have a problem with immigration, and would not oppose raising the limit – but after, AFTER the borders are controlled and the current crisis is handled. We’ve had this bait and switch before; amnesty first, then controls. Got the amnesty but no controls. And here we are, with you arguing for a repeat.

I grew up and still live in Southern California…

… I have witnessed the change from the Bracero Program to the true invasion of the United States all based on the socialist lie of Aztlan.

Once the Motor Voter Bill became law, millions of illegal aliens were allowed to vote…

… and the Demographics and political power in California changed forever.

Now, on this Memorial Day Weekend, families of fallen Veteran’s votes, among others, are cancelled out by the illegals…

… Our prisons, hospitals, schools, welfare, and social services have been raped and assaulted on a scale equal to the hostile force of a conquering military army.

It is apparent you have not the intelligence nor experience to argue this point apart from a social theory expressed in Democrat talking points…

… but you continue, showing your ignorance with every typed word.

“Victimless crime…”…?

It isn’t even that these people (Wasserman-Schultz types) have some kind of warm-and-fuzzy we-love-everybody agenda. It’s that they are in positions of power in our government, thanks to the South Chicago community organizer, and that they have absolutely no clue as to the legalities and common sense outlined in our constitution and set of laws, and most importantly, that they simply do not care for these things. They are amateurs who were elevated to positions of power by this amateur administration, thinking their warm-and-fuzzy we-love-everybody sensibilities should prevail over law and common sense.

2012 cannot come fast enough. If we don’t restore statesmanship, and the rule of law, and sheer intelligent competence by then, America is lost.

First posted in 2008

“The Fiscal Impact of Immigration: An Analysis of the Costs to 15 Federal Departments and Agencies.”

The 70-page study was conducted by Manhattan Institute adjunct fellow Edwin S. Rubenstein. As senior economist at W.R. Grace & Co. in the 1980s, he directed in-depth studies of government waste for the Grace Commission that sparked much popular outrage against Washington’s spendthrift habits.

Rubenstein found that each immigrant costs taxpayers more than $9,000, while every immigrant household of four costs $36,000 in taxes. That’s far more than the $3,408 in 2007 dollars the National Research Council’s 1997 “New Americans” study of federal, state and local government expenditures found immigrants to cost.

Yeh victimless. Ashley please bite me.

Actually, all that is necessary to become a criminal is for one to break a law. You can argue that ‘victimless’ (so called) crimes should not be crimes; you cannot argue that ‘victimless’ crimes are not crimes.

By the way, ‘victimless’ crimes when not dealt with as crimes have justice as its victim.

Anyone facing her in a one-on-one has to be prepared for the Dem talking points ahead of time and refute them with facts in the same rat-a-tat fashion. The other way to confound her is to ask her to define her terms or ask to to distinguish what it means to be illegal and how that differs from undocumented. She needs to be hammered on the costs to taxpayers (with lots of facts and figures in support) in underwriting illegals. She needs to be asked point-blank how illegals take away jobs from our own marginally skilled, especially in a time of high unemployment.

Most importantly, anyone who “debates” DW-S has to be able to talk over her because rudeness is her MO. She wants to have the final word and to have it on record. (It helps to laugh at her absurdities by repeating them and then refuting them lickety-split.) Listening is not her strongest suit, and I doubt that she can withstand pointed mockery.

You might want to clarify that just a bit. A person who works off book and then needs government help to make ends meet certainly depresses the economy. Most illegals in my neck of the woods fit the above description. They came here illegally, they accept off book work for wages less than minimum wage, they have children here who are eligible for social welfare support and therefore take more out of the system than they return.

chemman on May 29, 2011 at 7:15 PM

I always think of a quote from Sonny Bono when it comes to this subject, “What’s to talk about? Its illegal.” (Too bad his wife isn’t like that, but I digress).

Wasserman-Schultz is a harpy Liberal hack. Always has been. I remember when I first saw her back in 2007 (I believe). I knew then I didn’t like her. Still don’t.

They are not “immigrants” they are “aliens who have entered the country illegally“.

You cannot emigrate except legally.

They are “illegal aliens“.

Otherwise known as FDV’s.

Also, she has no problem with illegals getting Obamacare while Obama throws granny off the cliff (for real). Yeah, Debbie, I said “Obamacare”.

Most Republicans, the Conservatives, at least, also think the Constitution should be kept Constitutional and protected from Zero’s Marxist freak show of Kagan, Sotomayor, Breyer, Ginsburg and, very often, Kennedy.

it’s easy for the weak-minded to forget that we have a fairly generous legal immigration system that illegal immigrants bypassed and violated on their entry into this country.

Our immigration laws are not as generous — or as fair — as they were in the days of Lincoln. A primary reason for immigration in his day was economic betterment — a defined reason today to deny entry to our country. We have yet to return to those days — primarily because Lincoln’s adversaries — the Know Nothings — gained ascendancy in our political system and enacted laws restricting immigration to Asians, Catholics, and other undesirable groups. That group is the one whose legacy sadly haunts a Republican Party which should be a beacon for individual rights — and hence, a beacon for the rights of individual immigration. Instead, we, the party against second-class citizenship, the party against second-class humanity, are now a party in which that which we detest philosophically have found a home to nest.

As for bypassing/violation of laws, any law which is unfair or unreasonable on its face begs to be bypassed/violated. In Lincoln’s time, we had people enforcing the laws with regard to fugitive slaves called bushwackers, and we had people violating that law called conductors. Which of these are considered heroes today, and which ones do our history lessons despise?

When we hear about “coyotes” we think in terms of detestable human trafficking — but why does the coyote exist? There are people who want to better themselves — to remove themselves from poverty — and the one way in which they can do that is to come here, where there are jobs far better than any they could obtain in their own land. There are those here who say “wait your turn in line” — well, I would submit, why is there a line, and why must there be turns? That there is a line for no good reason other than the echos of discrimination we enforced earlier in our society begs that that line be balked — and hence the “coyote” has a lively business, one that will not be going away any time soon.

We occasionally read about illegal aliens dying in the desert whilst trying to reach the job he or she desires — a job waiting but marked as “illegal” by our law — even though such a job performed by a citizen would be perfectly legal. The manner in which these otherwise-legal jobs are offered are indeed illegal and unrightful on many levels — the “job applicants” work for salaries far lower than the legal minimum allowed to be offered, they work without legally required contributions to our entitlement plans, or, if they do, they contribute using identities stolen from citizens. All of these side effects could be mitigated by allowing free immigration to anyone who would swear to abide by our laws. Further, by having such an unreasonable immigration law that it nearly begs to be broken, we make it easier for the immigrant to break others related to employment, such as the payment of social security and medicare taxes or the falsification of documents needed to pay same; such secondary problems vanish under a free immigration regimen.

Again, the fix is obvious, but few here want to go there — (a) immigration reform to allow the free immigration of those seeking jobs here in the USA, and (b) for those already here, confession to breaking the law, payment of fines for having done so.

I submit that those here who want millions of people deported are not going to get their wish, and that the millions of voting children these people have here already view you — and, by extension, the Republicans, as an enemy and will not vote for them, even if everything else the Republicans stand for otherwise aligns with their morals and ethics.

So, I’m weak minded, Ed, but in a way you should understand, given that the Know Nothings once targeted the Catholic Irish as undesirable immigrants.

We have 12 million undocumented immigrants in this country that are part of the backbone of our economy.

The backbone? How so?

ericdijon on May 29, 2011 at 7:44 PM

I wonder how the left would respond if we said, sure thing for amnesty. If they turn themselves in no deportation, only a fine, plus a three year work visa. By then they could have taken care of their affairs and head back home. But, no path to citizenship whatsoever! No new democrat voters.

darwin-t on May 29, 2011 at 7:31 PM

A century ago goods, capital, and people moved with relative ease in the western world. You didn’t need passports to travel. We need to restore that kind of world.

Interestingly, it was Progressives who wanted to restrict immigration with legal barriers; the same Progressives who wanted to built a Bismarckian welfare state in this country. So, yes, let’s revisit the old welfare state idea with a view to its expiration.

Legal immigrant vs illegal alien. Some people don’t understand the difference between a dinner guest and a burgler.
