DNC chair: Republicans think illegal immigration should be illegal, or something

posted at 4:00 pm on May 29, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

This is what happens when political correctness distorts clear and descriptive language. Immigration reform activists have insisted on removing the phrase illegal immigration from the political lexicon, despite the fact that the term is both accurate and objective. Once that happens, it’s easy for the weak-minded to forget that we have a fairly generous legal immigration system that illegal immigrants bypassed and violated on their entry into this country. And by “the weak-minded,” I mean Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, as Doug Powers notes at the Boss Emeritus’ site:

I think the president was clearly articulating that his position — the Democrats position — is that we need comprehensive immigration reform. We have 12 million undocumented immigrants in this country that are part of the backbone of our economy. And that is not only a reality but a necessity. And that it would be harmful if — the Republican solution that I’ve seen in the last three years is that we should just pack them all up and ship them back to their own countries, and that in fact it should be a crime and we should arrest them all. I mean that was the legislation that Jim Sensenbrenner advanced a couple of years ago.

Oh noes! Republicans want to make a crime … a crime crime! Maybe Rep. Wasserman-Schultz should familiarize herself with the law before attempting to change it, and certainly before she attempts to demagogue Republicans on the issue of crime and punishment as well as immigration.

I hope she runs for president in 2016, she’s that brilliant.

This is what happens when you substitute words like “illegal immigrant” with “undocumented worker.” All of a sudden the concept becomes meaningless, which is the goal of such language in the first place.

Of course in their minds, gun ownership becomes illegal, and gun control becomes enshrined in the Constitution. Ad infinitum.

katy the mean old lady on May 29, 2011 at 4:17 PM

People can be termed illegal immigrants in one of three ways: by entering without authorization or inspection, by staying beyond the authorized period after legal entry, or by violating the terms of legal entry. Their mode of violation breaks down as follows: If the suspect entered legally without inspection, then the suspect would be classified as either a “Non-Immigrant Visa Overstayer” (4 to 5.5 million) or a “Border Crossing Card Violator” (250,000 to 500,000). Together, legal entries account for 4.5–6 million unauthorized migrants, just under half of the total population. If the suspect entered illegally without inspection, then the suspect would be classified as having “Evaded the Immigration Inspectors and Border Patrol”. This mode of entry accounts for 6 to 7 million people, slightly more than half of the total population.

A person can be charged with illegally re-entering the United States after being previously deported. The U.S. Sentencing Guidelines prescribe up to a 16-level offense level increase, potentially causing more than a quadrupling of one’s sentence, for illegal re-entry of certain felons into the U.S. The PROTECT Act instructed the U.S. Sentencing Commission to authorize four-level “fast-track” downward departures in illegal-reentry immigration cases upon motion of the prosecutor.

To all of you who consider Debbie Wassupinhershmutz is a fairly vapid broad, do not underestimate her fanaticism for the malicious misleading misdirection of issues she promotes.

After all, she is targeting her message to populations of the country such as:

http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2011/05/04/report-nearly-half-of-detroiters-cant-read/

Never underestimate the potential of scared, stupid people at the polls…

Sadly, I do not hear any Republican leader stepping up and calling her out on her baloney & hypocrisy. That worries me even more.

2012 will have nothing to do with the facts, but how well the facts are communicated, and aggressively attacking the baloney propagated by people like the DNC chair. If there aren’t any Republicans willing to become aggressive with the facts, and willing to continually promote them other than Ryan, then the Republicans may be in trouble.

Because there are a lot of “stupid” people in this country who live on government subsidies, and know how to “work the system”, who would do anything to keep things they way they are.

Open borders maybe not, but some pro-immigration, pro-liberty solution. People will risk their lives along that border until there are more than 10,000 temporary unskilled work visas per year. I will not put someone who simply wants work in the category of a criminal.

AshleyTKing on May 29, 2011 at 5:00 PM

crr6, nice attempt at spin.

From Wikipedia:

Illegal immigration is the migration of people into a country in circumstances where such people do not meet the legal requirements for immigrating in that country, that is, when they are violating the immigration laws of that jurisdiction.

Violating laws is the very definition of illegal:

1. Prohibited by law. (American Heritage Dictionary)

1. forbidden by law; unlawful; illicit (Collins English Dictionary)

Oh, how I long for the days when words actually had specific meanings, which weren’t distorted beyond all recognition.

The Democrats are nothing but a party of cowards. They send out a spokesperson, like Debbie, to tell the world what the Republicans want to do, yet they do nothing. If they had any guts, they’d propose a law that says we want open borders, hell they proposed a health care law no one wanted, why not that. Their problem is they wouldn’t get re-elected and they know it so the cowards hide behind a woman whose only proposal is to tell people Republicans want to make these people illegal or something.

It’s just like Medicare, they won’t propose anything and they’re hiding behind Paul Ryan’s budget proposal. They’re just cowards and, if we had a free press in this country, they’d point that out to the world.

OK, I can change the subject to Bill Belichick if you like…

Patriots coach Bill Belichick delivered the commencement address for 127 graduating students and their friends and family Friday morning at Suffield Academy in Connecticut.

Belichick, a parent of graduating senior Brian Belichick, stressed the importance of working hard and being a team player in his address, reminding students that over the past 10 years, no team in any one of the four major sports could boast an MVP on their roster.

“There’s no ‘I’ in team, but there is an ‘I’ in win,” he said. “That stands for individual achievement. You need to do your job, because without it, there’s no leadership.”

Belichick told students that they should always do what’s right for the team, whether or not they want to do it.

“The greatest leaders I’ve coached just go out there and do their job with a good attitude,” he said.

You would think that after Pelosi the Dems would have learned that gender (or race) alone is an inadequate indicator of competency. You would think that those who trumpet their lack of bias would not have to be told that. Debbie will be another disaster and her constituents (those looking to get re-elected) and the media will be loathe to say anything for fear of sounding chauvinistic. With any luck this stupidity on their part will continue until at least November of 2011.

If you were on the other side of the border, you would be trying to get a job too; to hell with the damn paperwork: the US only legally lets in 10,000 unskilled laborers a year.

The trouble now is that the gangs have taken over this trafficking.

AshleyTKing on May 29, 2011 at 4:48 PM

With 9% unemployment (just reported, not the “real” unemployment percentage) in America, which border does an American have to cross to get a job?

I get so tired of the “moral” argument being used as an excuse for open borders.

Yes, America lovers hard workers, but America is also built on the rule of law. Follow the rules. It’s really just that simple.

CWforFreedom on May 29, 2011 at 5:13 PM

I wouldn’t even use the word immigrant for the illegals.
In the old days it meant giving up all ties and citizenship with the country one is coming from.

Legally illegal border crossers.

Ashley and the libs do NOT Care what the implications are for the tax payers of this great country

I do, I am one.

Yes but the flood of illegal workers just by sheer supply and demand reduces the wages the low end workers can demand. So yeh you and the libs are screwing poor legal Americans and legal immigrants.

CWforFreedom on May 29, 2011 at 5:05 PM

What always matter is real wages, what you can buy with your wages. Competition may drive down nominal wages, but more production from workers means that real wages will be going up for everyone.

AshleyTKing on May 29, 2011 at 5:16 PM

AshleyTKing on May 29, 2011 at 5:16 PM

You seem to forget that those displaced workers often are not being productive at all. Now just admit that you are an open borders advocate. If you are not all of your words on this subject are just bullsh ite. You cannot have it both ways.

CWforFreedom on May 29, 2011 at 5:19 PM

Debbie is trying to use legal terms to cloud the argument. The word “immigration” assumes “legal immigration”. The left’s plan is to equate opposition to “undocumented workers” to NAZIs asking for “your papers”. It’s dishonest wordplay.

The proper term for these folks is “alien” as in a citizen of another country.

Here’s the federal statute: http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/uscode/8/12/II/VIII/1325

ROCnPhilly on May 29, 2011 at 5:19 PM

How about forging documents and identity theft, are those still illegal?
BDavis on May 29, 2011 at 4:09 PM

Nope. That’s just re-documenting the un-documented! How dare you deny them the use of your ID/credit rating!

BuckNutty on May 29, 2011 at 5:19 PM

AshleyTking why are you betraying U.S.?

CWforFreedom on May 29, 2011 at 5:20 PM

We have 12 million undocumented immigrants in this country

I love how they (the bleeding heart liberals) try to make it sound like the 12 million criminals that crossed our borders ILLEGALY are merely undocumented immigrants…how PC!!

The liberals do this on purpose, they want to confuse the weak-minded liberal drones (which is obviously easy to do) with their double speak or they have no clue what the word ILLEGAL means, either way their BS propaganda is as see through as Saran Wrap!!

Liberty or Death on May 29, 2011 at 5:22 PM

“Immigration reform activists have insisted on removing the phrase illegal immigration from the political lexicon, despite the fact that the term is both accurate and objective.”

Going by the above, it looks as if they have succeeded. Try: “Illegal-immigration reform activists”.
