Yes, Palin was invited to Rolling Thunder

posted at 8:15 am on May 28, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Last night, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell and Lauren Stephenson reported that the veterans group Rolling Thunder had not invited Sarah Palin to their annual ride taking place this weekend and were dumbfounded when Palin announced her participation as the start of her bus tour.   Under the headline “Stealing Their Thunder,” Mitchell suggested that Palin was hijacking their “very serious purpose” with her participation.  The piece hinges on an interview with Rolling Thunder’s Ted Shpak, who called Palin’s announcement “a big distraction”:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

One day after Sarah Palin announced her bus tour, a group sponsoring a Memorial Day weekend event she plans to attend said they never invited her.

“She wasn’t invited. We heard yesterday she came out with a press release she was coming to Rolling Thunder,” Ted Shpak, national legislative director of Rolling Thunder, told “Andrea Mitchell Reports.” Shpak is one of three members of Rolling Thunder’s current leadership who says he had no idea Palin was coming until it was posted on her website.

On Thursday, the former governor of Alaska and potential GOP presidential candidate announced her bus tour on her political action committee’s website, Sarahpac.com. The tour is to begin in Washington, D.C., where Palin plans to participate in the Sunday motorcycle rally sponsored by Rolling Thunder Inc., a group that raises awareness of prisoners of war and those missing in action.

“She’s not invited to speak. We’re not endorsing her … (but) we can’t stop her from coming to ride, if she wants to ride,” Shpak continued.

There’s a problem with this story, but to be fair to everyone, it seems to be an honest case of an internal miscommunication at Rolling Thunder. After I read this story last night, I got in contact with Christine Colborne, who handles the media for Rolling Thunder. She explained that Shpak didn’t know that Palin had been indeed invited to ride at the event. The invitation came from a retired board member, Michael DiPaolo, who had connections in Alaska and got Palin to agree to attend.

Requests for high-profile personalities to attend the event are not new. Colborne mentioned that actor Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) attended at least one of the Rolling Thunder events, as have other celebrities, usually just to ride with a lower profile. Most times, though, those requests don’t even get responses, let alone acceptances. That’s a shame, because the Rolling Thunder event highlights the issues surrounding American POWs and MIAs from the Vietnam War and later conflicts, as well as providing support to their families, who really need the emotional support they get from this group of volunteer veterans.

Colborne spoke with me on the phone in the middle of an all-night car ride to Washington DC, and explained that the last-minute RSVP didn’t get communicated through the echelons of Rolling Thunder. Everyone is either in transit or already in DC, and internal communication broke down as often happens before a major event. Shpak (and Colborne) were taken by surprise by Palin’s announcement. Shpak does have the authority to speak for the organization, Colborne says, but he had no idea that Palin was invited by DiPaolo, and Shpak worried that Palin’s arrival might be a “big distraction” from the issues on which Rolling Thunder wants people to focus. Obviously, Shpak — a Vietnam veteran himself — feels passionate about defending the organization, but went on NBC with faulty information. Shpak, Colborne, and almost everyone else at Rolling Thunder are volunteers, just ordinary people doing extraordinary work, and that means they get the occasional hiccup.

Palin will indeed be welcomed to the Rolling Thunder event. It’s a good organization with a worthy mission, so don’t let a miscommunication distract people from its purpose, either. Be sure to check out the web site, the merchandise that helps support the group, and other ways in which we can all assist them in that mission.

That is why we are in this situation. Too many elites and intellectuals settling for the compromising moderate for the win whilst wishing in one hand and spitting in the other hoping against hope the spit won’t fill up first instead of standing for principles and beliefs. Unicorns and Skittles FTW!!!

Of course it’s going to raise awareness about the Belle of Wasilla. Intentional or not-every thing she gets involved with ceases to be about the original subject and becomes all about what Palin said or did. Like Michelle Bachmann Palin is a bit of an attention…hawg. She’s a good woman who can’t help but liking the limelite. It’s easy to see where Bristol got it from….and it’s a big reason-well that and the Palinoids-why I’m not in her camp right now. She’s a larger-than-life celebrity. We need a leader. The late Major Richard Winters absolutely loathed the spotlight…and he was a phenomenal man and leader of ‘men’. SP might to well to emulate some of that great man’s qualities -rather than constantly look for a camera and a microphone.

annoyinglittletwerp on May 28, 2011 at 12:38 PM

You know, I just can’t figure you out. One minute you’re harping on the Palin supporters, and claiming you don’t have a problem with Palin, and the next minute, you’re making a comment like this, that just reeks of Palin envy.

I can just imagine what you would be saying if Palin was invited to this event and didn’t go. I think even YOU know that you would be criticizing her for that. She can’t win with you. That’s been pretty clear for a while now.

If Palin had gone to this event uninvited, then you might have a case for your “attention hawg” cow manure. But she WAS invited, and she has a son who is serving in the military. She belongs at such a rally for that reason, alone, and by all accounts I’ve seen, there is NO MICROPHONE there for her.

You are just being petty here, and it’s pathetic.

I take it, IF you were ACTIVE in politics in 1980, your man was George H>W> Bush. Reagan was UNELECTABLE. He was down to Carter of all people by 25+ points in Feb/Mar of 1980.

Shpak worried that Palin’s arrival might be a “big distraction” from the issues on which Rolling Thunder wants people to focus.

I seriously doubt that.
As someone who served in the Navy I had NEVER heard of this “Rolling Thunder” bike ride till today.

Odds are, her showing up at this event has given this event and it’s causes, more exposure in 24 hours than they have gotten in the last 24 years.

Exhibit “A”

“Shpak says Palin’s attendance “is a big distraction” and that his “phone has been ringing off the hook” ever since she announced her intention to attend the event.”

If someone knows this Shpak guy they might want to clarify this reality for him, so he can set the record straight.

If Sarah can close the gap during the primaries, as I said in the quote you referenced, she will get my vote. There are several factors that do not compare to Reagan. So pointing to Reagan to prove Palin will follow the same path is not supported when all data is considered. I am certainly not going to list them because you have already heard them all.

csdeven on May 28, 2011 at 11:14 PM

…then Gallup and/or the media are choosing your candidate for you. There’s no reason for a primary. We’ll just consult Gallup in January of next year, and the candidate who has the best numbers with independents is the one we’ll go with.

pseudoforce on May 28, 2011 at 7:00 PM

The polls are not the only data I look at. First, I consider how I feel the candidate fits my values. Are they honest, trustworthy, etc. What is their history? How do they compare to the other choices I have available to me. The polling is the very last data I look at. I take all that data as a whole and make my choice.

csdeven on May 28, 2011 at 11:26 PM

We weren’t told that in January 2010. We were told that McCain had the most appeal for indies. The indies did what they always do: flock to the candidate with the most enthusiastic base of support.

I didn’t vote for McCain in the primaries. Not because of polling but because he didn’t fit my values.

Moderate, progressive. Same destination, different speed.

gryphon202 on May 29, 2011 at 1:48 AM

After reading many, many Palin posts here, as of tonight (if I may) I’ll synthesize. There are two types of posters here.

1. The Palinhaters: those who call her a hawg.

2. The Palinsupporters: those who respect the RT invitation for her to ride a hog.

The first group want her to sit down and shut up, wear a burkha, give up, give in to the left, the media and the elites. She can’t win fer losin’, ever, with this crew. They are paid trolls or those who espouse another candidate who spout their spew regarding Sarah no matter what the topic. To them, she’ll never win on any stage, in any contest, ever.

The second group knows she will eat the leftists’, the media’s and the RINOs’ lunch. Not only will she never wear a burkha, she’ll fight for our country’s restoration. She’ll remind us of who we are. And she’ll win.

I’m in camp number two.

Now you can justify doing the same by pointing to their behavior, or you can return the insults with respect until it’s clear they aren’t going to stop. At that point, you put your efforts into discussion with others. Take a page from your own book. Their opinion of you is inconsequential. They cannot hurt you and their credibility is non existent except with those just like him/her. You wouldn’t let others sway you from supporting your candidate, don’t let others from swaying you from acting in a civil manner.

She should be ashamed of herself.

The reaction to this event is very interesting. Many people are just admiring her pretty pictures, folks who would usually snark instead. She’s great at handling her own image.

It really shows how inept McCain’s campaign staff were with her. And now hese same advisers are saying she can’t win, is too crazy/stupid to have nuclear code access, and is an organizational disaster.

Seems pretty obvious they can’t see past the end of their own noses.

lonestar1 on May 29, 2011 at 4:27 PM

A poster by the name of Eddy posted this at C4P:

I was at the Rolling Thunder parade and had the privilege of shaking Governor Palin’s hand (being a conservative from the San Francisco area, this was certainly a treat).

I saw her towards the end of the route on the backseat of a motorcycle and then was the across the street from where the motorcycles parked. She walked across the street with Piper, Bristol, and Todd (surrounded by veterans who acted as her bodyguards) and I approached her and shook her hand. I said “G-d Bless You” and then she asked me for my name.

The media (I know that CNN was there for sure) had surrounded her as she and the Palin family moved towards the Lincoln Memorial, where they had SUV’s awaiting them. That’s when she spoke to the CNN reporters (as she was walking). Governor Palin got inside the SUV’s but then got out so she could speak with the veterans who approached the car. She took pictures with several fans (I took a few of her) and then I had a chance to shake Bristol’s hand as well (and commend her for her performance on Dancing With the Stars- she smiled and said “thank you”).

The group then headed to the tents on either side of the Rolling Thunder stage which held numerous wounded veterans and their families. Although Governor Palin did not speak on stage, she spent a long time talking with the individual veterans (I had a chance to see her speaking with a brave soldier who’s leg was in a cast). (The contrast between Obama and Governor Palin cannot be more clear: she meets with wounded veterans after riding a motorcycle, he’s busy giving flawed toasts at Buckingham Palace to the Queen).

The Palin family left after the singing of the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance. It was an incredible day, and I wish Governor Palin the best of luck on her tour.

A message from Sarah Palin

Roll On Rolling Thunder-

There’s no better way to see D.C. than on the back of a Harley! My family may be used to snowmachines more so than motorcycles (though you couldn’t tell it with Todd driving a hog today with Piper on the back and with Bristol riding on the back of another bike). But whether you’re riding the open road or the frozen tundra, you’re celebrating a free spirit. What could be more American than that?

Today’s Rolling Thunder rally in DC is all about freedom. And it’s about duty and loyalty and service. The message heard loud and clear through the roar of tens of thousands of bike engines declared, “We will never forget our heroes left behind!” Truly, our POWs and MIAs honored today are America’s real heroes.

In addition to drawing special attention to POWs and MIAs, Rolling Thunders works to help all veterans, active duty service men and women, and military families in so many ways. Riding with these patriots today reinforced that we must do all we can to remind all Americans that we owe our freedom to our vets and to those missing and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice to make this the greatest country on earth. They deserve our debt of gratitude. It’s not the politician or the reporter who makes us free; it is the veteran.

One man who clearly understands this is Rep. Allen West, who was there today to honor our military. I really appreciated meeting him. Thank you for spending your day with the troops, Lt. Colonel West!

Meeting with Blue Star and Gold Star mothers this afternoon puts much into perspective. These beautiful families sacrifice so much for our freedom. This is what Memorial Day weekend is all about. Many of us this weekend are firing up the grill and enjoying time with our loved ones. Remember that we’re able to do that because someone else’s loved one is willing to lay it all on the line to defend our freedom. Someone is willing to re-deploy again and again far from home. Someone is willing to endure the blistering heat of Iraq’s deserts or the brutal cold of Afghanistan’s mountains. Someone is willing to put his or her own life on hold to make sure we’re safe. We never hear them complain, do we? And we never hear their families complain either. That’s what duty and service means. And Rolling Thunder’s commitment to them is what loyalty means.

I’m thankful Rolling Thunder keeps the mission of honoring our vets alive! For in doing so, they remind us what is good and free and worthy in America. So roll on, Rolling Thunder! Like Martin Luther King, Jr. said about the great struggle for civil rights, “we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream…”

Let’s roll on to honor our vets, to secure our blessings of liberty, and to fundamentally restore our proud America!

- Sarah Palin

Assigning an entire group with the despicable behavior of a few is totally wrong. It is done to you. It is done to me.

You wouldn’t let others sway you from supporting your candidate, don’t let others from swaying you from acting in a civil manner.

csdeven on May 29, 2011 at 1:07 PM

Since I personally cannot hurt you or your credibility
(you do that yourself), may I say that I find you to be
laughable. Who sits up all night and posts drivel? Posting
after posting after posting, repetitious lies; just whom
do you think you are fooling? We are all on to your act.

I wish I could’ve contributed earlier on the thread but I was on an open-location place so I didn’t want to compromise my password. Also, the computer I was using had no Flash update so I couldn’t see videos. Sucked big time.

There is no “biker’s vote.” Bikers are from every profession/trade with every political leaning there is. Unless one is running on something like reduced motorcycle insurance or a national helmet law, bikers will not vote the same way.

On the windshield of Palin’s bike: a likeness of President George W. Bush. Next to it, the words “Miss Me?” And on her hand, the words “justice rolls” were written in smeared ink.

It was an apparent reference to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which is quoted on Palin’s website: “We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

Palin didn’t take questions from reporters and, in keeping her social media strategy, offered her thoughts on her political website.

“There’s no better way to see D.C. than on the back of a Harley!” Palin wrote. “My family may be used to snowmachines more so than motorcycles.”

Heh.
