Yes, Palin was invited to Rolling Thunder
posted at 8:15 am on May 28, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
Last night, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell and Lauren Stephenson reported that the veterans group Rolling Thunder had not invited Sarah Palin to their annual ride taking place this weekend and were dumbfounded when Palin announced her participation as the start of her bus tour. Under the headline “Stealing Their Thunder,” Mitchell suggested that Palin was hijacking their “very serious purpose” with her participation. The piece hinges on an interview with Rolling Thunder’s Ted Shpak, who called Palin’s announcement “a big distraction”:
Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
One day after Sarah Palin announced her bus tour, a group sponsoring a Memorial Day weekend event she plans to attend said they never invited her.
“She wasn’t invited. We heard yesterday she came out with a press release she was coming to Rolling Thunder,” Ted Shpak, national legislative director of Rolling Thunder, told “Andrea Mitchell Reports.” Shpak is one of three members of Rolling Thunder’s current leadership who says he had no idea Palin was coming until it was posted on her website.
On Thursday, the former governor of Alaska and potential GOP presidential candidate announced her bus tour on her political action committee’s website, Sarahpac.com. The tour is to begin in Washington, D.C., where Palin plans to participate in the Sunday motorcycle rally sponsored by Rolling Thunder Inc., a group that raises awareness of prisoners of war and those missing in action.
“She’s not invited to speak. We’re not endorsing her … (but) we can’t stop her from coming to ride, if she wants to ride,” Shpak continued.
There’s a problem with this story, but to be fair to everyone, it seems to be an honest case of an internal miscommunication at Rolling Thunder. After I read this story last night, I got in contact with Christine Colborne, who handles the media for Rolling Thunder. She explained that Shpak didn’t know that Palin had been indeed invited to ride at the event. The invitation came from a retired board member, Michael DiPaolo, who had connections in Alaska and got Palin to agree to attend.
Requests for high-profile personalities to attend the event are not new. Colborne mentioned that actor Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) attended at least one of the Rolling Thunder events, as have other celebrities, usually just to ride with a lower profile. Most times, though, those requests don’t even get responses, let alone acceptances. That’s a shame, because the Rolling Thunder event highlights the issues surrounding American POWs and MIAs from the Vietnam War and later conflicts, as well as providing support to their families, who really need the emotional support they get from this group of volunteer veterans.
Colborne spoke with me on the phone in the middle of an all-night car ride to Washington DC, and explained that the last-minute RSVP didn’t get communicated through the echelons of Rolling Thunder. Everyone is either in transit or already in DC, and internal communication broke down as often happens before a major event. Shpak (and Colborne) were taken by surprise by Palin’s announcement. Shpak does have the authority to speak for the organization, Colborne says, but he had no idea that Palin was invited by DiPaolo, and Shpak worried that Palin’s arrival might be a “big distraction” from the issues on which Rolling Thunder wants people to focus. Obviously, Shpak — a Vietnam veteran himself — feels passionate about defending the organization, but went on NBC with faulty information. Shpak, Colborne, and almost everyone else at Rolling Thunder are volunteers, just ordinary people doing extraordinary work, and that means they get the occasional hiccup.
Palin will indeed be welcomed to the Rolling Thunder event. It’s a good organization with a worthy mission, so don’t let a miscommunication distract people from its purpose, either. Be sure to check out the web site, the merchandise that helps support the group, and other ways in which we can all assist them in that mission.

I too would be inclined to give Shpak the benefit of the doubt if MSNBC had cherry picked their coverage. But they sought out an official spokesman, found one, and Shpak proceeded to give them his personal opinion cloaked in his spokesmanship. The kindest thing that I can say about Shpak is that he makes a piss-poor RT spokesman.

It’s hard sometimes. My first bike since I started riding was a Sportster 48. It’s the largest of the Sportsters, but it isn’t a large bike. I’m 6’2″. Most people are nice, but a riding buddy of mine did once say that I looked like a spider monkey on a circus bike. He also asked what my sister rode. Doesn’t matter though, because I like it.

Why not both? Personally, I think it would be kind of foolish to invite her and not give her an opportunity to speak. But your mileage may vary.

It was just announced that Chris Christie and his twin brother will ride in Rolling Thunder.

Nah, Shpak has made a very good living off of his Vietnam service. He says he came back a nut like all Vietnam vets came back nuts. Excuse me?
He’s an ass. You can’t tell whether his devotion to this is because of his war experience (whatever that was) or because it’s his job to sue chemical companies for Agent Orange.

I think Ms. Mitchell forgot some journalism basics in her quest to rush this story to air. Once Ted Shpak indicated he didn’t think Palin was invited, did you even bother to contact the Palin Team and ask from whom their Rolling Thunder invitation originated? Team Palin would have probably identified Michael DiPaolo, and then you could have chatted with him.
If this false report is what passes for professional journalism today, Palin has nothing to worry about on her bus tour to the White House. However, if this is reflective of the depth of reporting on other subjects, this is disturbing indeed.

You have to wonder? I’m not at all surprised about this coming from MSNBC. What concerns me more is the woeful lack of information on Ted Shpak. It seems he feeds into the “We [Vietnam vets] all came back crazy and all did crazy things” meme, and has made a tidy sum for himself suing Agent Orange manufacturers. I don’t know, but I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if he was a liberal dem.

I disagree. I think MSNBC did cherry picked their coverage. I haven’t done a thorough search of their site, but Ted Shpak’s name is way, way down the list of contacts as far as I can tell from this newsletter pdf.
But there’s like forty names and phone numbers on the organizational list. He’s not one of the two official media contacts which are listed on their Press Room page. If they had called the number from the Contacts page, MSNBC would have gotten Artie Shaw, the Executive Director.
Now it’s possible MSNBC has him on their Rolodex, with others from RT I might add, as he’s one of the two Legislative Directors and they never bothered to go the proper route. Considering Andrea Mitchell’s attitude and bias, I have little doubt her motivation was to find a person who would be sympathetic to the point she wanted to make.
I’m inclined to give Shpak the benefit of the doubt, though. I don’t know that his sympathies run to the Left when not talking about Vet’s issues. It’s likely or they wouldn’t have gone to him. Even so, I wonder why his phone is ringing off the hook for this. Maybe, everyone’s at RT was as a result of the announcement.
Dusty on May 28, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Maybe Shpak was lying about his phone ringing off the hook. I wouldn’t put it past someone like him, who has used personal injury shysters to make a hefty buck. Something about Shpak just stinks. And while I’m not anywhere near giving MSNBC the benefit of the doubt on this, anyone who is surprised and/or concerned about Andrea Mitchell’s conduct in this matter really needs to wake up from their coma.

It took you just one phone call to find out what happened – couldn’t he have done his homework before spouting off to the media?

Ted Shpak is a con artist. I was on the staff of the Vietnam Veterans Of America and the question came up that more veterans of Vietnam had committed suicide then had been killed in combat. I traced this back to testimony given to the Senate and House Veterans Affairs Committe they came from Shpak and another man both who at that time were engaged in litigation against the Agent Orange manufacturers and were good friends of each other. I queried them both where they got the information and the both admitted the story was a fabrication. They made it up. When I asked them why they said that added over $250,000 to the grants they received from the government taking them from $150,000 to $400,000 and then subsequent grants totally well over a million and a half. The two of them also settled against the Orange manufacturers. The two still receive grants from the government.
When I asked them why run the risk one said that the Mercedes he drives was worth the risk. Veterans ripping off veterans has a long history. Henry V written by Shakespeare told off scams perpetrated by veterans.
This guy is a good buddy of Chris Dodd and he came to Richard Blumenthal’s defense when he was exposed. Look at the pictures of Blumenthal when he was at the VFW hall Shpak is standing there with the other veterans.
When I queried the Congress about his testimony he was allowed to amend his testimony but never forced to give back the money. Those are fact go check them out. Also who ever is using my screen name on this knock it off.

Ed, I think you’re being too “fair to everyone.” Look at it from Gov. Palin’s perspective. She gets invited to participate in a veteran’s benefit and agrees, then the leadership of the organization goes on national TV and trashes her as a classless grandstander who cares more about herself than the event.
Wouldn’t you think that someone in Shpak’s position would do a bit of a fact check himself before running with the least generous take on the matter, given that he has to know how bad he’s going to end up making Palin look?
That’s really crappy.
And this has nothing to do with Palin! I’d say the same thing in defense of John freaking Kerry! Criticize these guys on the merits, don’t entrap them into situations just to make them look bad.
And if Rolling Thunder doesn’t want to cultivate some ill will over this, they should coordinate their efforts a little better. Being disorganized is not a license to smear and impugn the motives of good people who are just trying to help them.

That was my point — if you are going to make accusations like that back it up yourself right off the bat, at the very least with something minimally tangible. wait a minute I thought she hides out in the fox bunker. I’m so confused…..behind enemy lines or a coward hiding in the fox bunker I wish these people would make up their minds….

A little morning comedy….
Jay Leno: Are you dating anyone?
Meghan McCain: No. I’m in, like, dating Babylon. Like, I go on dates with men and, literally, like Sarah Palin will come up in like the first 20 minutes, and that doesn’t put me in the mood. Like, talking about Sarah Palin. And they just want to know gossip, and I’m just kind of taking a little hiatus from dating right now, because I just don’t want to talk about Sarah Palin.

We tried that in 2008. That just worked out swimmingly, didn’t it?/

Sarah is THE target of the LSM. No other politician will be demeaned as much and no other candidate will get more favorable attention than Obama.

ROFLMAO…sure tell that to GWB.

Duh. You insult my intelligence by even implying that I need that pointed out. What you call a bug, I call a feature. Chalk it up to a difference of opinion and move on. If a vote in the primaries for Sarah Palin is a wasted vote in your eyes, then I will readily and proudly admit that I have every intention of wasting my vote.

Dang! Beat me by two minutes.

cd, as someone who has follwed your comments for a long time and appreciated the true Cnservative position in what you offer I really do have to say, I’d take a breath if I were you. This thread is a great point and example. It has nothing to do with Palin’s electability. It’s central theme was Andrea Mitchell using a RT leader to mischaracterize Palin’s involvement in the event. Over, pretty much a lie. So, why do you think it’s helpful to sidetrack the issue to put Palin in an even worse light?
Because the theme whenever you’re involved in a Palin thread is something along the lines of, “Oops, the media is attacking her again and Oops, good because we think she’s an idiot too.”
You do their work for them.
