Yes, Palin was invited to Rolling Thunder

posted at 8:15 am on May 28, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Last night, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell and Lauren Stephenson reported that the veterans group Rolling Thunder had not invited Sarah Palin to their annual ride taking place this weekend and were dumbfounded when Palin announced her participation as the start of her bus tour.   Under the headline “Stealing Their Thunder,” Mitchell suggested that Palin was hijacking their “very serious purpose” with her participation.  The piece hinges on an interview with Rolling Thunder’s Ted Shpak, who called Palin’s announcement “a big distraction”:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

One day after Sarah Palin announced her bus tour, a group sponsoring a Memorial Day weekend event she plans to attend said they never invited her.

“She wasn’t invited. We heard yesterday she came out with a press release she was coming to Rolling Thunder,” Ted Shpak, national legislative director of Rolling Thunder, told “Andrea Mitchell Reports.” Shpak is one of three members of Rolling Thunder’s current leadership who says he had no idea Palin was coming until it was posted on her website.

On Thursday, the former governor of Alaska and potential GOP presidential candidate announced her bus tour on her political action committee’s website, Sarahpac.com. The tour is to begin in Washington, D.C., where Palin plans to participate in the Sunday motorcycle rally sponsored by Rolling Thunder Inc., a group that raises awareness of prisoners of war and those missing in action.

“She’s not invited to speak. We’re not endorsing her … (but) we can’t stop her from coming to ride, if she wants to ride,” Shpak continued.

There’s a problem with this story, but to be fair to everyone, it seems to be an honest case of an internal miscommunication at Rolling Thunder. After I read this story last night, I got in contact with Christine Colborne, who handles the media for Rolling Thunder. She explained that Shpak didn’t know that Palin had been indeed invited to ride at the event. The invitation came from a retired board member, Michael DiPaolo, who had connections in Alaska and got Palin to agree to attend.

Requests for high-profile personalities to attend the event are not new. Colborne mentioned that actor Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) attended at least one of the Rolling Thunder events, as have other celebrities, usually just to ride with a lower profile. Most times, though, those requests don’t even get responses, let alone acceptances. That’s a shame, because the Rolling Thunder event highlights the issues surrounding American POWs and MIAs from the Vietnam War and later conflicts, as well as providing support to their families, who really need the emotional support they get from this group of volunteer veterans.

Colborne spoke with me on the phone in the middle of an all-night car ride to Washington DC, and explained that the last-minute RSVP didn’t get communicated through the echelons of Rolling Thunder. Everyone is either in transit or already in DC, and internal communication broke down as often happens before a major event. Shpak (and Colborne) were taken by surprise by Palin’s announcement. Shpak does have the authority to speak for the organization, Colborne says, but he had no idea that Palin was invited by DiPaolo, and Shpak worried that Palin’s arrival might be a “big distraction” from the issues on which Rolling Thunder wants people to focus. Obviously, Shpak — a Vietnam veteran himself — feels passionate about defending the organization, but went on NBC with faulty information. Shpak, Colborne, and almost everyone else at Rolling Thunder are volunteers, just ordinary people doing extraordinary work, and that means they get the occasional hiccup.

Palin will indeed be welcomed to the Rolling Thunder event. It’s a good organization with a worthy mission, so don’t let a miscommunication distract people from its purpose, either. Be sure to check out the web site, the merchandise that helps support the group, and other ways in which we can all assist them in that mission.

I’m pretty sure someone high up in the NBC food chain sent some eager, out-of-breath intern, tripping over wires and camera equipment to get this riveting, shocking breaking news into the ‘prompter just in time for ‘ol vulture face.

I think the hogs, the burly patriotic men (and women, though hopefully they’re not too burly), the thunder, Mama Grizzly and a historical USA Memorial Day weekend tour is just too much for them to consume at once.

Rolling Thunder has had other “notables” participate in their past events. If Palin raise the awareness of their event, how can she be a distraction? She didn’t ask to speak and wasn’t asked to speak. All she and Todd are doing is to ride in it.

McScribbler, using your logic, Palin should never appear at any worthwhile function for fear that she might distract from their purpose. That’s pretty stupid logic.

This fool Shpak running to MSNBC is the one who has caused the distraction, not Palin. The announcement that Palin would be riding in it raised awareness. There are far more people who know about it now than before.

Volunteer or not, Ted Shpak needs to learn how to do his job. Having a high-profile individual calling attention to your event is not an unwanted “distraction,” it’s a desireable stroke of good luck — which is undoubtedly why your more media-savvy board member Michael diPaolo invited Gov. Palin to attend your event in the first place.

Get a clue, and while you’re at it, get a cell phone too. That way your organization will be able to notify you of important facts in the future, regardless of where you are.

Why wouldn’t Gov Sarah Palin attend? Her son Track Palin, is an Iraq War Veteran.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, honorary member and official “Brigade Mom” of the Arctic Wolves, Fort Wainwright, just outside Fairbanks, home of the 25th Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team (Stryker) – better known as the “Arctic Wolves”. The Wolves, over 4,000 strong, consist of three infantry battalions and a cavalry squadron, as well as several attached specialist units such as artillery, signal, and engineers.

Fairbanks welcomes home Arctic Wolves – they lost people in Iraq.

What is wrong with MSNBC? Honestly are the people producing those segments bi- polar? They don’t bother to do any research what so ever? They don’t even bother to Google? Andrea Mitchell is reading from a teleprompter she’s been given a script. Memorial Day Weekend – MSNBC can’t stop attacking a Veteran’s Mother even when she’s honoring him and his fellow veterans. I thought Comcast was going to improve the NBCU product. MSNBC has some of the most classless people working in the business.

On his girly bike with his little silver safety helmet.

Dems are just jealous about the difference in optics.

Go Sarah. It’s a great way to honor our troops. I have seen and been thrilled by the sound of this group of riders before, and Rolling Thunder is a most apt name!

no I said:

I do find it funny. Rolling thunder just landed one of if not the biggest name they have ever had to promote their event and this Shpak would rather allow his politics to distract away from the good that a Palin appearence would do for his organization and its cause.

dollar to donuts Shpak is a liberal. It’s a mental diease I tell you.

And if you think a vet can’t be a liberal you are being immature, childish and stupid.

You mean Electraglides aren’t green?

tim c on May 28, 2011 at 8:31 AM

The brand new one i was looking at in the dealership the other day was two tone green for a paltry 36,000,00.

They’re not into electoral politics. He reacted hastily but without malice.

It’s basically the kind of miscommunication you get in grassroots organizations. NBC should have checked with the listed media contacts first before running with this story, however.

Ed Morrissey on May 28, 2011 at 8:59 AM

Thanks for the clarification Ed. And I agree NBC is the main group to blame here.

Ed Morrissey on May 28, 2011 at 8:59 AM

That’s my point it’s Memorial Day Weekend – Wouldn’t someone at MSNBC at least Google a little research? Track Palin’s Military service and his mother’s support of the U.S. Military isn’t a secret. MSNBC couldn’t stop attacking Palin even for Memorial Day Weekend? It’s loathsome to see Veterans, being used to throw bombs at Palin. I don’t see any reason why Sarah Palin wouldn’t be involved in Rolling Thunder. It’s pretty consistence with her support of the U.S. Military.

Dr Evil on May 28, 2011 at 9:07 AM

Any bets as to Andrea Mitchell having ever heard of Rolling Thunder before this week? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Heh

Heck, some people even manage to disagree civilly. Until political dissenter/martyr troll comes around, starting fights with everyone in a comment thread, spewing its passionate anti-whatever-you’re-into views all over the productive discussion. This troll will likely get mouthy about how pathetic a blogger is for not entertaining dissenting opinions, all the while only being interested in hearing itself talk (or type, as it were). Political dissenter/martyr troll, what good do you think you are doing? Whose mind do you think you are changing? Troll, you are an @$$hole.

MNHawk on May 28, 2011 at 9:07 AM

Oh an Hawkdriver show me where I said only vets can comment, k?

Bradky on May 28, 2011 at 8:57 AM

Oh please, your very response was intended to diminish the points here without addressing a single thing that was said in comment on even in the interview.

And your above comment about being a vet transcending politics and then claiming you watched the entire interview yesterday, … oh please again. Shpak was clearly not being an impartial in his comments. If you really watched it, how could you think otherwise? He is not the face I’d want on my event.

And she was invited. He didn’t know and didn’t check himself. That was the point of this thread. He looked like an ass. Maybe you missed that or maybe the your point in any thread you engage in, is a tad more contrived.

Bradky on May 28, 2011 at 9:08 AM

Did they even try to contact Palin’s people for an explanation?

Gwillie on May 28, 2011 at 8:52 AM

Probably it fell in the bin labeled “too good to check”.

Volunteer or not, Ted Shpak needs to learn how to do his job. Having a high-profile individual calling attention to your event is not an unwanted “distraction,” it’s a desirable stroke of good luck — which is undoubtedly why your more media-savvy board member Michael diPaolo invited Gov. Palin to attend your event in the first place.

AZCoyote on May 28, 2011 at 8:49 AM

Exactly. Palin’s support is a windfall this year for Rolling Thunder, and that should have been obvious to him.

The very idea of Palin being part of Rolling Thunder makes liberals’ heads explode. I love it.

hawkdriver on May 28, 2011 at 9:07 AM

I watched the interview, found it interesting but was glad Ed posted this explanation.

I just don’t get all wee wee’d up everytime something remotely impacts Palin… perhaps you do but that is your thing not mine.

Bradky on May 28, 2011 at 9:11 AM

speaking of Memorial Day, is Obama going to farm out his duty to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier this weekend to Joe O’Biden again?

Dr Evil on May 28, 2011 at 8:58 AM

You left out Commander-in-Chief, Alaska National Guard, retired.

Prediction:

Sarah & Todd will just be there among the masses and the roar, just like everyone else.

And when she does not seize upon the opportunity to give a “me, myself & I” speech like someone else we know would do without hesitation if he were invited to this kind of event (LOL!)…

Ed they could have passed and not run the piece at all, it’s Memorial Day Weekend. MSNBC is Palin Bashing 24/7 and they think anyone is going to take their coverage seriously. MSNBC segment producers have PDS with hair on it.

Military Service people, and their families are aware of Sarah Palin’s support of U.S. Military Service People.

and you have no proof he isn’t. Nor do you have any proof that he did not allow his politcs or personal feeling to override the goals of his group. the butt covering of the antipalin people are strong with you.

Hell the man could be a Mitt supporter for all we know. the fact is his comment hurt his group’s cause and caused a distraction from the group’s goals.

unseen on May 28, 2011 at 9:12 AM

Rolling Thunder…What they do for families of fallen military at their funerals, to defend against the Westboro Baptist clan and their hateful protests at them, is absolutely incredible. They will come in force, no charge to the families, at the family’s request, and drown-out the inane chants from the Phelps freaks when they plan one of these funeral protests.

They are absolutely wonderful.

And for Palin to get together with them, is just a “plus” for her in my book.

I don’t care what unseen said. You replied. Mission accomplished. But admit it.

Your greater point was to nueter any criticism of the man because he’s vet. Nice to know I’ll get a free pass in anything I even comment here at Hot Air again.

I’ll repeat. I watched the interview. He sounded like a tool for MSNBC without checking his own organization to the contrary of the story. What otherwise motivates people to do such things?

He volunteered to help MSNBC with a hit piece.
