Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on May 26, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

You know, I feel bad for OOTW voters, because this is going to be one tough poll on Sunday. So to you OOTW voters, I offer a toast:

More than two years ago, we learned that the Obama administration didn’t know the State Department had a protocol team to avoid embarrassments like this. Apparently, they still don’t.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

With all the celebrities/famous folk at the dinner, at least President O’Bama didn’t give a shout out to anyone during his toast to the queen, that’s something to be grateful for isn’t it ? :)
.

philly_PA on May 26, 2011 at 8:17 AM

God bless Queen Elizabeth for taking it in stride . . . although the look she shot him when he tried to raise the glass before the anthem was finished must have hit home, since he immediately puts down his glass.

His words were pretty good, but in what universe is every word and gesture not vetted by the protocol police first? It’s no sin to be ignorant, but ignorance exacerbated by arrogance is intolerable.

God save the Queen, and God save America from this hapless buffoon.

Adjoran on May 26, 2011 at 8:18 AM

This is another ‘unforced error’ on BO’s part. Blunders like this are to be avoided, and it’s easy since we actually pay people to advise officials on protocol. The press has made a stab at trying to blame BO’s embarrassment on the orchestra, however the orchestra knows the routine since they’ve probably played for numerous ceremonies. It’s their job.

The Brits are on their game, and it looks as though this trip has not been much of a success. MO has now been dubbed, “The Queen of Bling” after appearing at another lavish state dinner wearing some truly ghastly jewelry (hosted by the Obies and paid for with our money):

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1390986/Michelle-shines-U-S-party-attended-David-Beckham-Colin-Firth-JK-Rowling.html

Meanwhile, back at home, Americans are sending donations and traveling to tornado torn areas to help their fellow Americans.

The Obies party on, blundering around Europe, running their mouths when they aren’t stuffing them with lobster, steak and expensive wines.

Kinda OT: MORE va-cay-cay for the loser-in-chief:

(The Jakarta Post) – US President Barack Obama has announced plans to visit Bali in November, Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika said Wednesday.

“I just met US Ambassador to Indonesia Scot Marciel. He told me Obama would visit Bali, most likely in November,” Pastika said.

He added that US State Secretary Hillary Clinton would also go to Bali in July, to attend an international meeting and to check on preparations in Bali to welcome Obama.

Pastika said Bali would be ready to receive the US president.

Just another chance for him to continue his world wide embarassments…..:-(

If you’d followed my link, you’d know that the song is also called America. Besides, my point was that Øbama wouldn’t know a patriotic American song if it bit him on the ass, probably because he has not ever sung one. As for protocol, the repeated crotch salutes did not clue anyone in?

Wasn’t Bush the dumb and embarrassing bumpkin?

This is totally cringe-worthy. I’m not a head of state, and don’t have my own protocol department costing millions per year, but even a schlub like I am could have come closer to correct protocol by winging it. Of course you don’t talk over “God Save the Queen”.

But liberals seem to embrace boorish ignorance as a virtue, so they’re probably proud of this on the coasts.

Obama is an embarrassment. In the space of a week, he was schooled by the two most loyal allies the US has: the UK (yes, it was the Queen — but still!) and Israel.

Is the GOP in such dissaray that we can’t knock this incompetent poseur out of office?

As someone noted in the other thread, the Queen seemed to be saying “put it down” or (something else) right before he put down his glass.

I listened to it, and indeed, she did say, “Put it down.” (At least, I’m 95% sure of that.)

So watch the video, listen for that, and see him put down the glass and then get this terrible expression on his face – just the sort of expression you might imagine he would get after the Queen said that.

stefano1 on May 26, 2011 at 8:36 PM

Actually, we can’t blame BO for all of this. He spoke first to begin the toast, then the music started prematurely. I only blame him for not stopping once the music started. But, this is like the oath of office: someone else (for a change) helped make him look foolish.
