Obama: We’re working on gun control “under the radar”

posted at 1:15 pm on May 25, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

I missed this last week, and so may many who didn’t notice Instapundit’s link to the Greeley Gazette’s post on the White House’s efforts to impose gun control through executive-branch regulatory adventurism.  Jack Minor caught this anecdote buried below the jump on a Washington Post Lifestyle profile of Steve Croley, first published six weeks ago.  Described as “the White House’s point man on gun regulation policy,” the Post includes this rather telling quote from President Obama on the issue of gun control from March:

On March 30, the 30th anniversary of the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, Jim Brady, who sustained a debilitating head wound in the attack, and his wife, Sarah, came to Capitol Hill to push for a ban on the controversial “large magazines.” Brady, for whom the law requiring background checks on handgun purchasers is named, then met with White House press secretary Jay Carney. During the meeting, President Obama dropped in and, according to Sarah Brady, brought up the issue of gun control, “to fill us in that it was very much on his agenda,” she said.

“I just want you to know that we are working on it,” Brady recalled the president telling them. “We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar.”

Minor noted that this under-the-radar anecdote matches up with other reporting:

The statement reinforces an article in the Huffington Post describing how the administration is exploring ways to bypass Congress and enact gun control through executive action.

The Department of Justice reportedly is holding meetings discussing the White House’s options for enacting regulations on its own or through adjoining agencies and departments. “Administration officials said talk of executive orders or agency action are among a host of options that President Barack Obama and his advisers are considering. “

That also matches up with Obama’s approach on … nearly everything, it seems.  Regulatory adventurism has been a hallmark of every other Obama priority, whether it be health care, financial-services reform, labor policy, and now on gun control.  When his agenda is too radical for Congress, Obama simply plans to bypass Congress and rule by decree.

Glenn Reynolds headlined this under the banner “TRANSPARENCY.”  That’s fitting, but “RADICAL” and “DISHONEST” work well, too.  Here’s the problem for Democrats: Ever since the Clinton years, they have avoided gun control like the plague, and the courts have taken a libertarian view of the Second Amendment.  How many of the incumbent Democrats in the Senate want to defend Obama on his power play to impose gun control by executive fiat in the dark?  How will that fly in places like Missouri, Nebraska, and West Virginia?  How about in open seats like Virginia’s, which Democrats hope to hold?

Update: I meant “executive fiat,” not “legislative fiat.”  The latter is an oxymoron, obviously.

Anyone wonder how they will try to do this “Under the radar”?

They’re ultimate goal will of course be confiscation, but they will need several pieces of the puzzle in place to achieve their nirvana of a subjugated populace:

First of all, they will need to know what everyone has – and they can only do this by subjecting all firearm purchases to government scrutiny.

Watch them try to push closing the non-existent loopholes and have every sale (including private sales and transfers) run through the NICS system.

This will ensure that when anyone buys or sells a gun, the government will track it.

This will in fact implement a de facto registration system.

Next, watch them try to make it more difficult or next to impossible to buy a gun to reduce the number of gun owners in the country.

After that, it is just an easy road to registration and then confiscation.

One of the under the radar forms of regulation was just brought to my attention. The largest utility company in MI. has a two tiered health care insurance policy for their employees. You have to fill out a questionaire that includes the question “do you own and store firearms at your home”. Another question asks if you do own firearms “are they kept in a childproof safe”. In order to get the top tier insurance you have to validate your answers. In regards to another poster about the numerous agencies and their regulations the health care industry is now basing the cost of your premiums on the ownership and storage of firearms. To top that off, the state of California has specific regulations that define a gun safe and attest to it’s fire protection and the ability to withstand a break-in.

Just in case:

Cheaper than dirt: Long-Term Gun Storage

There is a saying that goes, “If it’s time to bury your guns, then its time to dig them up.” Some say that if you hide your gun off-site, it becomes useless. Either way, if you plan to store your gun for the long-term, you need to make sure you have pre-treated it properly and prepared your storage area properly to prevent rust from ruining your weapon. Whether you’re choosing to store your hunting rifle at home until the next season, storing a gun collection or preparing for the future, preparing the weapons beforehand is done the same way.

in Greek, the implication is that the outcome is certain: “after you have come here and defeated me, then it will be yours to take.” For comparison, these elements happen to be present in the previously-noted English phrase, “over my dead body”, or the similar phrase “I’ll give you my gun when you take it from my cold, dead hands.”

From the Wikipedia article referenced above.

davidk on May 25, 2011 at 5:54 PM

well, I read somewhere that the ATF was going to redefine what a shotgun was in an attempt to make many of them illegal. This might be just one part of this.

I’m not surprised at all. But since when do Presidents get to just make edicts all the freaking time in our country? I’m waiting for Obama to just make an edict that his term can be extended for another 20 years? I guess a Democrat President can do just about anything they want, especially when all the GOP does is send letters and requests to the President.

JellyToast on May 25, 2011 at 5:55 PM

I’ll tell you what, though, it is time for a lot of these agencies to be completely abolished. Tyranny comes in many forms and a big one in America is tyranny by government agencies. Name your government agency and they have nearly unlimited power. They are not elected, they are faceless and live forever. Dissolve them all! There is nothing a government agency can do that congress can’t! It’s just that congress does not want to be held accountable! And that is the the reason they create these agencies! They get to make policies and regulations and laws that no Senator or Representative would dare vote to pass!

Anyone wonder how they will try to do this “Under the radar”?

Colbyjack on May 25, 2011 at 3:01 PM

It will be far more insidious than what you list. They already have the ability to declare certain firearms unsuitable for importation. The surplus Korean M-1 Garands and the proposed restrictions on shotguns are examples.

By executive action (through BATF regulations) they can severely restrict future sales of many common firearms by declaring they have no legitimate sporting purpose. The prime example of this tactic is the proposed shotgun ban. By declaring sports such as IPSC and IDPA shooting as not true sports, they are proposing severe limitions on shotguns. My Benelli super 90 would be illegal simply because the 3 round magazine tube can be replaced by a 7 round tube. Any shotgun with a collapsible stock and/or pistol grip would also be banned. And that’s just a couple of examples.

Guns don’t kill people, large magazines kill people.

You know there are enough people out there who can drop a mag and lock in a new one and lose maybe 2 shots during the process. So it doesn’t matter if your mag holds 10 rounds or 20 rounds, someone with the will power and training can wipe out whomever they want.

Whats next telling people they can only own 1 gun because someone went on a rampage and used 4 guns to kill people.

Here is a better solution. Make it mandatory for everyone to carry a loaded weapon at all times. I bet you then that crime rates would drop significantly. Not to mention terrorists would stay in their caves.

I have no doubt that the Democratic Oppressive Party will try those kinds of tactics along with others to inflict a ‘Death by a thousand cuts’ type attack on our second amendment freedoms. They will try to make it more of a hassle and embarrassing to buy a gun along with more taxes on guns and ammo.

But those measures won’t have the knock out blow effect of eviscerating our basic human right of self-defense.

As I said, to accomplish that goal they will need to know what you and everyone has and a way to tightly control what you can buy and what you can sell. Make no mistake, the Democratic Oppressive Party wants this control so badly they can taste it. And they will get this and the ultimate goal of confiscation if we let them.

Side note: You have to wonder what the commerce clause implications of Obamacare will have on the private transactions between two people in one state.

Government agencies should be “ADVISORY” only. If Congress is too busy to do it’s job, then they can step down and let us put someone there that feels up to the task of passing laws. Any law, regulation, restraint, mandate that an agency has put in place should be “null and void!”

If you buy a gun, make sure it fits your needs and your hand! Make sure you buy enough ammo for 6 months and put it in a dry place. Make sue you buy the cleaning items for said gun. Also make sure if you have small kids they can not get to the gun (I am sure most of you are aware of this).

A license you recieve from the feds or your own state (or even city) is just a peice of paper that tells them where you live should they want to come andask questions. Remember that….

You know there are enough people out there who can drop a mag and lock in a new one and lose maybe 2 shots during the process. So it doesn’t matter if your mag holds 10 rounds or 20 rounds, someone with the will power and training can wipe out whomever they want.

I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but here in California all rifles have had the mag release buttons removed. You have to use a separate device to release the Mag.

Thank God they haven’t required it of handguns [yet].
