The strange scoop at Daily Caller

posted at 10:02 am on May 24, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Call it … vaguely Shakespearean.  The Daily Caller’s Jonathan Strong reports today on a string of direct messages on Twitter from the account of Sarah Palin spokesperson Rebecca Mansour that is filled with the unguarded opinions of … Rebecca Mansour.  There’s no denying a certain voyeuristic intrigue of looking in someone else’s mailbox, but in the end, it’s hardly a journalistic scoop to find out that one of the top aides to one potential candidate doesn’t think much of the other candidates or those who criticize her boss.  The piece is almost literally filled with sound and fury that signifies … nothing at all:

A series of messages forwarded to The Daily Caller show a top aide to former Alaska Gov. and possible presidential candidate Sarah Palin mocking top political figures and even her boss’s own daughter, Bristol Palin.

Red State Editor-in-Chief and CNN contributor Erick Erickson is “a total douchebag,” wrote Palin speechwriter and domestic policy adviser Rebecca Mansour in a May 22, 2010, message. “Greasy dumb ass with a talent for self-promotion. He threw himself in at the Gov’s SC rally. Self-promotion.” (Erickson said South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley invited him to the rally).

Mitt Romney supporters are “wacky as hell,” Mansour wrote, but usually Romney’s presence online is just an “AstroTurf brigade.”

I guess this would be a scoop if Rebecca was running for the presidency.  Since she’s not, it’s more of an oversold “meh.”  Even the messages about Bristol Palin are less than advertised.  Mansour was responding at the time to the announcement that Bristol and Levi Johnston had decided to get married, an announcement that certainly caused heads to snap in more places than Palin Central.

Also, these messages were not intended for public consumption.  Whoever turned over these messages to Strong had Mansour’s trust, at least at one time.  I suspect that Mansour has learned a lesson about supposedly private communications in the political world, but that’s about the biggest news scoop in this story.  Otherwise, the messages themselves are little more than gossipy, transient thoughts.

I asked Jonathan Strong, whose work I normally like, to comment on the story, and he responded:

The messages reveal information about Palin’s political plans and interaction with other campaigns, and also show the judgement of one of her top aides, and by extension, Palin herself. They show a Palin aide leaking damaging information about an enemy in the media. They’re also of interest to readers, who can judge for themselves how well Palin is being served by her staff.

Well, having been around a few election cycles, I can attest that every campaign likes to push negative information about their opponents.  I’ve probably received a couple of those types of messages already this morning, and I’m sure I’ll get more by the end of the day, too.  “Leaking damaging information” is what they do.  Being shocked by that, or even considering it news, is approaching Captain Louis Renault territory.

Judgment, of course, is a different matter.  Clearly Mansour chose to trust the wrong person in this instance.  And if Rebecca was running for President or Congress, that might be a story.  This is only pertinent to whomever might consider Mansour for her next position.

Note: I want to add that I’ve been in contact with Rebecca for at least a couple of years and she has always handled communications professionally with me, for whatever that’s worth.

Update: Ben Smith at Politico reports that someone has been attempting to peddle these messages for a few months, although in the end, it appears that no money changed hands.

Bailey is the ONLY member of Palin’s staff to be found(twice) to have ACTUALLY acted unethically. He has no room to talk. He’s just disgruntled that Palin didn’t want him working on the VP campaign and that she suspended him for his ethical lapses.

steebo77 on May 24, 2011 at 12:22 PM

This is what I see over and over. It’s the ABP people who stop in a thread. Raise a ruckus with unsupported talking points. A Palin supporter replies with facts. And all Palin supporters will now be called overly sensitive, irrational automatons.

I’ll admit we’ve had a few on our side who fit the bill (gary48102 or whatever number, and the like) but recently, the irrational rants are coming by and large from the ABP crew.

miConsevative on May 24, 2011 at 12:27 PM

Well thank you Palinistas for proving Bailey’s points about how working for Palin forced him to excuse behavior he never thought he was capable of excusing.

That’s a shame I was trying to keep her above the fray. But what he describes is exactly what happens here.

This really is who Palin is, I guess.

steebo77 on May 24, 2011 at 12:22 PM

I don’t even think he is disgruntled as much as he is opportunistic. He wants to make money off the fact that he used to be close to the Palins. His original money making scheme was a pitch to Rebecca Monsour to co-write a pro-Palin book. When she told him she wasn’t interested, he then went in search of someone, anyone who would pay him to to write something about Palin. Not surprisingly, there were some anti-Palinites willing to pony up some cash.

definition of gift – gift (gift)

something given to show friendship, affection, support, etc.; present.

Yep she didn’t pay for it with her own money, and she didn’t give it to herself. I am not sure what you thought it meant so I can’t divine, what you meant by it changes everything.

And only Palin followers try to duplicate the behavior of Alinsky… I’ve seen them also quote The Art of War.

petunia on May 24, 2011 at 12:06 PM

Again – you don’t understand what Alinsky tactics are because you clearly haven’t read anything the man’s written. Even if we Palinistas did use such tactics (we don’t), we’d not be the only ones – HRC wrote her freaking college thesis about Alinsky tactics, and they are a mainstay of urban Donkey politics.

Also – The Art of War, another book you’ve not read, is a masterpiece of strategy. If every politician running or hoping to run this country isn’t at least familiar with it, they should be.

The Art of War is, first and foremost, about avoiding violent conflict, and then, when being forced to engage in it, how to win. There’s a reason it’s treasured by people in the military, business, politics, etc – stick to, er, whatever it is you do in these comments, just quit citing books and names when you are clearly ignorant of what they actually extol.

I used to think we needed to argue Conservatism more aggressively, using the right points coupled with periodic denigration, to beat the Libs at their own game.

Instead I see us using these tactics on each other and the ‘enemy’ (the others’ candidate of choice).

I frankly DO NOT CARE whom you support, as we are 18+ months away from this making a difference. And frankly, bashing each others’ candidates only prevents us from gaining true insight into their beliefs, character, etc.

One side is worse when it comes to bashing (and no, anti-Palins, that is not a compliment to you), but almost everyone’s succumbed to slinging arrows…BEFORE THE PRIMARIES?!?? Dumb.

This says nothing about Palin. This says nothing about Mansour. It says everything about the leaker and the website who got the scoop. These were private conversations leaked, and the Palin deranged wackos who are trying to equate it with Romney’s aides dissing Palin in their official capacity show how desperate they are.

They have been promoting this “story” on our local news, here in Phoenix. So far, there is no confirmation that the Palins bought this house. It is nothing but speculation. Period. But even if she did buy this house, so what? She’s got a big family. She can afford it. The desperate attempt to make her into a “limousine liberal” over it looks quite foolish.

I won’t bother to click on DC for their big ‘get’ on private, irrelevant messages. The comments have been a hoot, however! Particularly this:

Because the description of her methods and attitudes toward others? This is exactly how I have been treated by her supporters.

Before I started coming to Hot Air again, even if I didn’t think she was qualified to be President. I still thought she was getting a bad deal with the press.

Now,these descriptions of how she operates is the truth that I have experienced.

And I think some of her campaign people come here and follow her lead and try to destroy other candidates and commenters. They are far too ready with the quotes and the files, they aren’t just normal people discussing politics.

The Alinsky tactics happen everyday just as described.

It is more believable that these tactics are set at the top.

Wow. Calling someone a limousine liberal because they bought a large house? Damn. I celebrate anyone who can buy — and pay for — any house in this housing market.

And I love it when someone, by their own efforts, become wealthy and find the great American dream of health, wealth, and prosperity.

ANTI-palin people across the nation shouold be afraid:

Romney’s favorability numbers are basically identical to what they were the last time we polled Ohio. Palin’s actually doing 6 points better in the horse race against Obama and has seen her net favorability improve 4 points relative to our last poll

So much for their talking points that her negatives can not improve. She isn’t even campaigning yet….

PJ Emeritus on May 24, 2011 at 3:43 PM

Approximately a year and a half ago I emailed C4P and said that I was unsure about Palin as a presidential candidate
because of something I read about her. Instead of getting
an opinion or review of the correct facts (what I read
turned out to be a lie – I really don’t recall all the details) Rebecca Manseur wrote me a very nasty email.
I saved it because if I thought I could forward it to the Palin camp so Palin could have been forewarned I would have done so. My email
wasn’t a tirade; it was just a simple question. In fact,
I emailed her back and questioned her unprofessionalism.
She, in my opinion, was out of control; a little bit of crazy going on there with her email responses.

Because of my experience I have been waiting for something to happen involving this woman that would embarrass Palin’s campaign.
….and here we go…..I am glad that it wasn’t worse.
This is minor, however, a staff member calling the opposition a “douchbag”? If one of my employees called one of my clients or competitors a name like that they would be terminated. Antics like this damage the brand.

Agreed it is much ado about nothing. however, I have just started reading the DC and will not continue if they are going to compete with the other rumor mills. I really have a problem publishing stuff without attribution. I like to decide what the motives might be of the leaker myself.

I thought it was the biggest bunch of hooey & completely unworthy of a Conservative news site. How hypocritical of them at Daily Caller to act like people at all levels and every branch of political manuveuring, never have snarky PERSONAL conversations about our PROFESSIONAL lives. Geesh. There wasn’t anything in there that changed my opinion of Palin.

Who says she hasn’t been talking? She’s been giving tons of speeches, both at home and abroad. She’s really ramped up her FOX News and FBN appearances lately. She’s kept up with the Facebook notes and the tweets.

A lot of people like to say that she’d faded from view, gone into hiding, or something like that. Frankly, I don’t think that ever happened, except in the fantasizing minds of some of those who fear or dislike her.

nice try buddy but Palin’s polls have been going up since she has engaged the POTUs campaign at her Madioson WI speech.

she made up 6pts and now trails Obama by 10pts. Another 6pts swing and she wins the election.

She has been able to make up that 6pts over the last month. Wait until she campaigns for 12 months.
\

Now all polls ar eworhtless this far out but they do show trends and the trends are Palin’s support has been going up which is a direct refudiation of the SBP people’s talking points.

It would be nice if you would provide the link or at least the poll name when making these claims.

From RCP, I show the only candidate doing worse than Palin against Obama is Huntsman. Romney is the closest and is ahead of Palin by 13 points.

csdeven on May 24, 2011 at 5:27 PM

A lot of the candidates look better than Palin going by the poll averages because they include Rasmussen LV polls in their averages. For some reason, Scott Rasmussen has decided not to poll Palin v. Obama very often. If he did that would probably add at least a few points to her average, putting her closer with the rest of the pack. Probably closer to Pawlenty territory.

steebo77 on May 24, 2011 at 5:35 PM

steebo77 on May 24, 2011 at 5:35 PM

csdeven on May 24, 2011 at 5:42 PM

Which says nothing about the polls’ accuracy except that they use roughly the same “scientific” methodology. If you accept polls as news, then you have to believe that at one time recently Obama himself had a 60% overall approval rating.

gryphon202 on May 24, 2011 at 5:55 PM

csdeven on May 24, 2011 at 5:27 PM

A link? there are several national polls including gallup polls showing Palin gaining about 7pts since her madison WI speech. infact about every poll shows it. Even the ” i will never vote for her poll” showed the people that would never vote for her decreased by about 7pts.

the one showing her 10pts down and making up 6pts was the PPP poll on OH released today. this poll also showed her picking up a lot of moderate support (+21). Another meme disproven form the ABP people talking points.
