Quotes of the day

posted at 10:25 pm on May 24, 2011 by Allahpundit

“Shortly after Republicans swept last November to a historic victory in which Sarah Palin was credited with playing a central role, the former Alaska governor pulled aside her close aide, Rebecca Mansour, to discuss a hush-hush assignment: Reach out to conservative filmmaker Stephen K. Bannon with a request. Ask him if he would make a series of videos extolling Palin’s governorship and laying to rest lingering questions about her controversial decision to resign from office with a year-and-a-half left in her first term. It was this abdication, Palin knew, that had made her damaged goods in the eyes of some Republicans who once were eager to get behind her potential 2012 presidential campaign…

“The fruits of that initial conversation are now complete. The result is a two-hour-long, sweeping epic, a rough cut of which Bannon screened privately for Sarah and Todd Palin last Wednesday in Arizona, where Alaska’s most famous couple has been rumored to have purchased a new home. When it premieres in Iowa next month, the film is poised to serve as a galvanizing prelude to Palin’s prospective presidential campaign — an unconventional reintroduction to the nation that she and her political team have spent months eagerly anticipating, even as Beltway Republicans have largely concluded that she won’t run…

“‘This film is a call to action for a campaign like 1976: Reagan vs. the establishment,’ Bannon told RealClearPolitics. ‘Let’s have a good old-fashioned brouhaha.’…

“If she does decide to run, ‘The Undefeated’ will be the key element to her initial coming-out party. The film’s impending release — and the frenzied media attention that it is sure to generate — will serve as a vivid wake-up call that despite the many obstacles in front of her, Palin’s entry into the race would turn the campaign on its head in an instant, just as it did in 2008.

“As she mulls her decision in the coming weeks, the other Republican candidates in the field will be left to prepare for a hibernating grizzly who appears poised to rise up once again.”

Maybe or maybe not. But the two-hour film was made in three parts, each of which probably contain numerous self-contained scenes or vignettes that can be drawn upon for other purposes. Clips will be shown on television and on Youtube. Bit by bit Palin’s real record will get out in the open for everyone to see. And that will be a good thing.

So anything I post that’s critical of Romney is CYA? None of it is sincere? That’s neat, since it means I can’t win. If I praise Romney for something, I’m a RomneyBot. If I criticize Romney for something, I’m engaged in deception aimed at throwing people off the trail of my Romney fandom.

How exactly is this movie/documentary/biopic being made available to the public? Order it online like Ziegler’s film? Either way, there’s absolutely zero chance the woman’s not running if this is legit(and based on RCP’s lengthy piece, it’s the real deal). Nobody commissions someone to make a 2-hour long campaign ad at a cost of a million bucks if they’re not about to declare their candidacy.

What impresses me about Palin is how far ahead she’s planned all of this. This movie, the house in Arizona, waiting to let the field take shape. I’ve often said I’ve long since given up on questioning her decisions since she seems to have a gut instinct that bests almost any other politician in recent memory, but it bears repeating. Don’t underestimate this woman.

If you read the RCP article linked at the top of the page, it breaks down the entire documentary. I don’t know if Couric is omitted, but it’s definitely downplayed significantly. But apparently the movie opens with a montage of celebrities saying some rather nasty things about Palin. In fact, there’s an R-rated version of this flick being made available so Bill Maher won’t be forced onto the cutting room floor.

You’ve already stated that you would vote for Obama over Palin, so yeah, I doubt you would watch her movie.

Bishop on May 24, 2011 at 10:52 PM

Wait, does anyone honestly think Palin is going to convince me or any of the others who stopped backing her when she resigned with a 2 hour movie? I’m not sitting through a 2 hour movie for what should be a simple explanation. I doubt anyone else will outside of those who are already diehards.

TheBlueSite on May 24, 2011 at 10:45 PM

The film may not change the minds of people like you, but there are plenty of people who will pay attention and be open to it. Iowa during the election season has an especially captive audience.

A theatrical release is an interesting way to reintroduce a candidate.

There are a few drawbacks. How many undecided primary voters want to pay movie-theater prices to see what amounts to a two-hour commercial about a potential political candidate? It could look like a cash grab from a candidate who has made millions since becoming McCain’s running mate.

But it’s unconventional, which suits Palin. It makes her campaign somewhat of an event. And invitation-only free showings could impress potential voters.

Pointless and painful for everyone involved. Don’t feel bad, Allah, people are frustrated and sometimes you just make a convenient target.

Sarah Palin (The Holy One pbuh)= Barack H Obama (The One pbuh)

Thanks for making the connection crystal clear.

csdeven on May 24, 2011 at 10:52 PM

So Barack Obama has no chance of being re-elected, either? Thanks for making that crystal-clear, guy.

gryphon202 on May 24, 2011 at 10:53 PM

Who can enlighten me?

Kataklysmic on May 24, 2011 at 10:43 PM

Allah can correct me, but my memory is it started back in late 2008-2009. He would frequently link to “negative” stories/polls about Palin (but linking, of course, doesn’t imply one agrees with the content, just that they’re sharing “what’s out there” as far as news and opinion goes). The Palinistas took that as bias and hammered him, but he stood his ground, and from there it just took off as a meme and AP couldn’t win no matter what.

I remember one instance of a “positive” Palin story that broke, but it didn’t show up on HotAir as quick as we expect breaking news stories to. Palinistas took that as AP trying to sabotage her moment, when the truth was he just wasn’t at his apartment at the time. Again, it just sort of snowballed from there.

You, and others here, have refused reasonable attempts to explain her decision to resign.

You have your fingers in your ears, yelling la-la-la-la-la while some here have tried to engage you with logic and now, you wonder how this film (which you won’t watch in an open-minded way,) will change your mind?

massrighty on May 24, 2011 at 10:54 PM

You’re nothing but a sideshow freak, so anything you post fails to further the discussion.

fossten on May 24, 2011 at 10:45 PM

Excatly how does that further the discussion?

csdeven on May 24, 2011 at 10:54 PM

Yeah, if a Senator quite his Illinois seat and ran for president there is no way he could ever get elected… hey, wait a minute?

sharrukin on May 24, 2011 at 10:44 PM

You can’t be that dull, surely. Obama didn’t quit. Reagan didn’t quit. Clinton didn’t quit. Bush didn’t quit. They were all promoted. All presidents leave some kind of political post to assume the presidency. They don’t run for president as unemployed. Palin, on the other hand, actually quit to go – home.

Were you commenting here prior to 7/09? If so, can you or anyone else here produce a comment from you prior to Palin’s resignation that was praising of her?

Mister Mets on May 24, 2011 at 10:53 PM

If indeed a theatrical release is really what’s intended here. The details of the “Iowa Premiere” seem to be a bit sketchy, and that could mean any number of things.

gryphon202 on May 24, 2011 at 10:55 PM

fossten on May 24, 2011 at 10:50 PM

Sorry, but her explanation didn’t cut it for me (and her polling right after that decision confirms it didn’t cut it for most of us). Tough leaders don’t let issues like that take them out. If being tough were easy, there’d be no such thing as tough to begin with.

I think she quit because she realized she could amass a large fortune of tens of millions for herself…which she immediately proceeded to do. I lost faith in her that day, and I think a lot of other Palin supporters did too.
