Good news: Obama botches toast to the queen

posted at 7:53 pm on May 24, 2011 by Allahpundit

Ah, now his “2008″ gaffe from earlier today is starting to make more sense. Turns out … he really is brain-damaged.

No, I kid. I think he, like Frank Drebin, simply doesn’t believe in silly ideas like having queens:

The president paused, the guests stood, and the orchestra prepared to play.

But the president wasn’t done speaking.

“The vitality –“ the president said before the orchestra began…

“To the Queen,” the president finally said.

He lifted his glass to her, she smiled a bit uncomfortably.

But because the song was playing, no one drank from his or her glass, including the president, who put his glass down on the table.

Protocol, apparently, requires the toastmaster to wait until after “God Save the Queen” plays and then begin the toast. But the almighty O waits for no sovereign, so he launched straight into his shpiel. To which I say, good for him. What else was the American revolution about, if not the right of the president to half-ass some formulaic niceties about the British monarch? He should have punctuated it with a weary “whatever” and downed the glass in one gulp.

This is why he doesn’t get invited to weddings, guys.

I think you’re talking about Desirée Rogers who was the White House Social Secretary. I believe she made the security gaffes about that couple who crashed a dinner. She’s gone back to Chicago.

This is probably more info than you want to know, but I followed some of this in 2009 because of the many flubs that BHO made.

I checked the bio of the woman, Capricia Penavic Marshall, who’s Chief of Protocol and she is a Clintonista–even worked with Hillary on her Presidential campaign. Marshall wasn’t sworn in until August 2009. There were two acting chiefs from Jan-Aug (weird–I’m sure there’s a story there).

When Bush left, Gladys Boluda became Acting Chief. She’s the woman who was pictured greeting Gordon Brown at the WH. http://www.flickr.com/photos/downingstreet/3325818235/ Remember that? The missing Obamas raised some eyebrows.

She left in May 2009 and Laura Bowen Wills stepped in until August. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_of_Protocol_of_the_United_States

I’d love to know all the stories behind the people, but I find it very interesting their permanent person is a longtime confidante of Hillary Clinton. I wonder how much attention the WH actually pays to this Office!
