Quotes of the day

posted at 10:37 pm on May 20, 2011 by Allahpundit

“Since the al Qaeda leader was killed May 1 in a U.S. special operations forces raid on a compound in Pakistan, numerous details about the raid and materials confiscated at bin Laden’s home have been leaked to the media.

“In Panetta’s letter, obtained by CNN, he says the operation, ‘has led to an unprecedented amount of very sensitive — in fact, classified — information making its way into the press.’

“Disclosure of classified information to anyone not cleared for it — reporters, friends, colleagues in the private sector or other agencies, former agency officers — does tremendous damage to our work. At worst, leaks endanger lives,’ the letter said.”

***
“The CIA employed sophisticated new stealth drone aircraft to fly dozens of secret missions deep into Pakistani airspace and monitor the compound where Osama bin Laden was killed, current and former U.S. officials said…

“The agency turned to the new stealth aircraft “because they needed to see more about what was going on” than other surveillance platforms allowed, said a former U.S. official familiar with the details of the operation. “It’s not like you can just park a Predator overhead — the Pakistanis would know,” added the former official, who, like others interviewed, spoke on the condition of anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the program

“The stealth drones were used on the night of the raid, providing imagery that President Obama and members of his national security team appear in photographs to have been watching as U.S. Navy SEALs descended on the compound shortly after 1 a.m. in Pakistan. The drones are also equipped to eavesdrop on electronic transmissions, enabling U.S. officials to monitor the Pakistani response.”

***
“In the stash of hard drives, thumb drives, and personal papers discovered in Osama bin Laden’s compound, one especially revealing find was his personal diary. According to an analyst privy to the frequent updates of translated material being posted to the intelligence community’s classified internet, the late Al Qaeda leader periodically recorded his amusement that U.S. drones were searching for him in the mountainous border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan while he was living comfortably less than a quarter of a mile from a Pakistani military academy. ‘Bin Laden was yukking it up about how clueless we were,’ the source says.

“The joke ended up being on bin Laden, but it’s worth asking why he felt so cocky. He was, after all, the world’s most wanted man, and yet there were only a few bodyguards at his compound. Did bin Laden believe he would be tipped off before a SEAL team knocked down his door?

“To survive for six years in the posh Islamabad suburb of Abbottabad, bin Laden almost certainly relied on what might be called a ‘deep state’—a network of current and retired intelligence and military officers who are actively undermining the official policy of Pakistan’s government. ‘I have no doubt that members of Pakistan’s military and intelligence services knew of bin Laden’s whereabouts,’ says Representative Steve Rothman, a New Jersey Democrat who sits on the House subcommittees that fund the military and foreign-aid budgets and who has attended top-secret briefings on the May 1 raid. ‘The question remains, however, how far that knowledge went up the command chain in Pakistan.’”

***
“A ‘senior al Qaeda commander’ recently captured by Pakistani security officials served as a courier between slain al Qaeda leader Osama bin laden and his deputy, Ayman al Zawahiri…

“Yesterday, the Pakistani military, via its Inter-Service Public Relations directorate, took the unusual step of announcing the capture of Muhammad Ali Qasim Yaqub, a Yemeni citizen who is also known as Abu Sohaib Al Makki, during a raid in the southern port city of Karachi…

“Unnamed Pakistani military officials later told BBC that Yaqub was arrested on May 4, just two days after Osama bin Laden was killed during a raid in Abbottabad.”

***
“New satellite images have shown the alarming speed at which Pakistan is constructing a weapons-grade nuclear reactor…

“The site was barren in 2009 and the facility ‘costing billions’ was undetectable by satellite just 17 months ago, but has since grown at an alarming rate…

“Paul Brannon, a nuclear analyst with the Institute for Science and International Security, said: ‘The buildup is remarkable.’…

“And that nobody in the U.S. or in the Pakistani government says anything about this — especially in this day and age—is perplexing.”

DOD ramps up war of words over leaks on SEALS raid
May 19 2011
************

The Pentagon is getting riled at the White House over leaks detailing the the Navy Seals’ raid of Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan, according to The Christian Science Monitor.

“My concern is that there were too many people in too many places talking too much about this operation,” Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Wednesday. “And we had reached an agreement that we would not talk about operational details.”

“That lasted about 15 hours,” he said.

These are leaks that make the U.S. military’s job harder the next time they need to carry out a top-secret operation, defense officials say.

Pakistan Rushes to Finish Construction of Fourth Nuclear Reactor
May 17 2011
************

KHUSHAB, PAKISTAN – Recent satellite images obtained by Fox News from the aerial imagery company GEOEYE show an expanding nuclear facility at the Khushab facility about 100 miles south of Pakistan’s capital city of Islamabad. The pictures were taken on April 20 and indicate Pakistan is building a fourth nuclear reactor to produce plutonium.

Paul Brannan, a nuclear analyst with the Institute for Science and International Security, explains how U.S. officials and other nuclear experts have been able to document the alarming expansion of Pakistan’s nuclear program in the past two years.

“They have a telltale sign,” Brannan said, looking at the images. “I mean you can see the square of the reactor building, you can see the inner square of the reactor hall where the actual reactor goes, and if you measure the dimensions of the building it matches up exactly to the second and the third reactors.”

In 2009 it was a barren site.

Pakistan first revealed the Khushab site and its plutonium production facility in 1998 after the country’s first nuclear test. That is when Pakistan’s official nuclear program turned from the highly enriched uranium model established by the father of that program, A.Q. Khan, to plutonium production. Plutonium weapons are lighter, more mobile and easier to deliver than those based on highly enriched uranium.

Pakistan makes two nuclear weapons available to Saudi Arabia
***********

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report
***************************

30 Dec. Saudi Arabia has jumped ahead of Iran by obtaining the use of two Pakistani nuclear bombs or guided missile warheads. DEBKAfile’s Gulf sources believe the weapons are ready for delivery upon royal summons in Pakistan’s nuclear air base at Kamra in the northern district of Attock.

Already delivered is a quantity of Pakistan’s Ghauri-II missile with an extended range of 2,300 kilometers. They are tucked away in silos in the underground city of Al-Sulaiyil, south of the capital Riyadh.

At least two giant Saudi transport planes sporting civilian colors and no insignia are parked permanently at Pakistan’s Kamra base with air crews on standby. They will fly the nuclear weapons home upon receipt of a double coded signal from King Abdullah and the Director of General Intelligence Prince Muqrin bin Abdel Aziz. A single signal would not be enough.

In recent weeks, Saudi officials close to their intelligence establishment have been going around security forums in the West and dropping word that the kingdom no longer needs to build its own nuclear arsenal because it has acquired a source of readymade arms to be available on demand. Partial nuclear transparency was approved by Riyadh as part of a campaign to impress on the outside world that Saudi Arabia was in control of its affairs: The succession struggle had been brought under control; the Saudi regime had set its feet on a clearly defined political and military path; and the hawks of the royal house had gained the hand and were now setting the pace.

No Date?–2009?
***************************************

When he arrived in Egypt on Thursday, June 4, the President of the United States, Barack Obama, travelled to Cairo University where he delivered an anticipated speech about the relations between the United States and the Muslim world in front of three thousands guests.

Among the subjects evoked was the importance of microfinance in the fight against poverty as illustrated by a passage from his speech:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“Our common prosperity will be advanced by allowing all humanity, men and women, to reach their full potential …. That is why the United States will partner with any Muslim-majority country to support expanded literacy for girls and to help young women pursue employment through micro-financing that helps people live their dreams”.

Dire Straits on May 20, 2011 at 11:59 PM

Hey Dire, thanks for the heads up on the Preakness. I missed the Kentucky Derby and never even caught the replay. Uggh, maybe I will dig up the video and check it out before tomorrow’s race.

I love the ‘Triple crown’ races and usually never miss them.

So does ‘Animal Kingdom’ seem strong enough to survive the longer races ahead? That’s always the key to trying to win that elusive ‘Triple Crown’.

Meanwhile, in Cannes:

Spanish director Pedro Almodovar’s latest thriller, “The Skin I Live In,” had filmgoers fleeing the theater Thursday night at its gala premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, due to some aggressively violent and disturbing content.

The film, which stars Antonio Banderas and budding actress Spanish actress Elena Anaya, focuses on a mad but brilliant surgeon (Banderas) who kidnaps a man who raped his daughter.

The doctor’s daughter killed herself from the grief and it drives him to take very drastic measures. This is where it gets complicated and disturbing.

Banderas then gives the rapist a sex change and transplants his deceased daughter’s face onto his body.

He later has sex with the man he has brutally experimented on and turned into a woman.

The movie also contained several disturbing rape scenes and nudity.

Guests, among them a group of sweepstakes winners flown specially to Cannes by Stella Artois from the U.S. to enjoy a once in a lifetime movie premiere were horrified by the experience. That group of Americans left and did not come back to the theater following a partiularly violent rape scene in the middle of the film.

A second exodus occurred when Banderas’ character had relations with his victim at the end of the film, when even some of the French, who have a reputation for a higher tolerance for disturbing themes than Americans, had had enough.

Dire Straits on May 21, 2011 at 1:05 AM

Dershowitz on little Bammie: Obama has pushed the possibility of peace in the middle-east further away than any other administration

I don’t get little Bammie’s strategy on Israel yesterday. It makes no sense in terms of the Sorosian New World Order to set back negotiations by years. Even if his objective is an islamic Caliphate, the better way for him to do that would be to suck Israel in with sweet-talk. All he has accomplished has been to harden both sides. I would say it’s obviously stupidity, and yes, he’s a very stupid man. I can’t believe however that his entire White House and State Department team are equally stupid.

There’s just no explanation that makes sense.

Dire Straits on May 21, 2011 at 1:27 AM

It would be nice. As the years have passed it has become obvious to me how difficult that accomplisment is to attain.

When I was a kid, we had Secretariat(’73), Seattle Slew(’77), and Affirmed(’78), all win the ‘Triple Crown’ in a six year span. No horse since.

I found this cool webpage about the ‘Triple Crown’ when I was looking for this years Kentucky Derby replay. Check it out.

I had forgotten about Big Brown. That sucked. I thought he was going to win and believe he would have without the injury. Sad situation all the way around.

By hardening both sides, is he pushing for all-out war? That way he could use American military power against Israel because he “will always take the side of the Palestinians” to quote Obama from one of his books.

Via the White House:

But most assuredly, thanks must go to the President, our Commander-in-Chief — (applause) — for making perhaps the most courageous decision I’ve witnessed in almost 48 years in intelligence. He made this decision based on very compelling, but largely circumstantial intelligence.

So, all those drones and intercepts and CIA operatives watching the compound and this was just circumstantial intelligence? Not buying it. Nice try building Bam Bam up to superhero status though (from Clapper, the guy who thinks the Muslim Brotherhood are a secular organization, but I digress).

Was there a chance the mission could go terribly wrong? Yes, and to that extent I suppose one could say it was a courageous decision (although frankly I can’t imagine anyone with the same intelligence not giving it the go ahead). But to say they weren’t sure this wasn’t Bin Laden’s lair is becoming less and less credible.

Not watching… As far as I’m concerned, every time Barry brings this up… he is standing in the lime-light of the hard work of others.
-
The Golfer In Chief is playing best ball with real men. Someone else hit the best tee shot (W)… Barry jeered that shot and called it illegal…
-
Then the CIA and the Boots on the Ground did the dangerous job of getting US over the sand traps… Barry ran against that work in his bid for POTUS, and is now prosecuting those who took the AQ threat seriously enough to get real in their efforts…
-
He even tried to avoid taking the putt (which others had put right at the edge of the cup for him)… he took a nap… and I’m sure was told… ‘mr. Present… It is time’.
-
Don’t care in the least what he says about it now. Can’t wait for the BigAssMistake to be voted out.
