Tom Coburn: Why are we paying disability to “adult babies”?

posted at 10:13 pm on May 18, 2011 by Allahpundit

On the one hand, yeah.

On the other hand, watch the clip below. If this guy’s not “disabled,” who is?

“Given that Mr. Thornton is able to determine what is appropriate attire and actions in public, drive himself to complete errands, design and custom-make baby furniture to support a 350-pound adult and run an Internet support group, it is possible that he has been improperly collecting disability benefits for a period of time,” Mr. Coburn wrote in a letter Monday to Inspector General Patrick P. O’Carroll Jr…

In an email response to The Washington Times, Mr. Thornton threatened to kill himself if his Social Security payments are taken away, and said the television episode showing him doing woodwork oversold his abilities.

“You wanna test how damn serious I am about leaving this world, screw with my check that pays for this apartment and food. Try it. See how serious I am. I don’t care,” the California man said. “I have no problem killing myself. Take away the last thing keeping me here, and see what happens. Next time you see me on the news, it will be me in a body bag.”…

In his email to The Times, Mr. Thornton said he is not capable of working. He said running the website only takes four hours a month, and he said his craftsman skills were overstated by the program, which showed him working on his adult-sized high chair.

He’d rather die than lose his entitlements, notwithstanding the fact that they’re driving a crushing debt burden that threatens to destroy the country. This makes him different from everyone else … how?

Hey, remember in the marriage post this afternoon how I couldn’t tell if the guy was an alpha male or a beta male? In this case — not so difficult.

On the other hand, watch the clip below. If this guy’s not “disabled,” who is?

I’ve watched the clip. He shows complete awareness for how his lifestyle is perceived, and goes so far as to behave like an adult while out of his house. Also, he shows some skills when designing and constructing his playpen/crib/whatever. I wouldn’t call him disabled.
I should say, I don’t care how the guy chooses to live his life, but he shouldn’t expect someone else to finance it. And then threatening to kill himself if the SS checks stop coming? He’s a greedy pig, and as far as I’m concerned, it wouldn’t be a huge loss to society.

So he’s cognizant enough to threaten to off himself if the spigot is turned offteat is removed from his fat mouth, yet too disabled to support himself in any responsible/adult manner?

Pretty sure there are call centers that employ people to work at home if the employer can fund his own internet connection…

A weird fetish ≠ disabled. With regard to his suicide threats, well, if he’s a danger to himself, in every state I’ve ever lived in that’s cause to be committed, at least for an evaluation. If he’s going to play the mentally ill card, it should be trumped with an involuntary hospitalization.

Why the taxpayers need to enable this twit to pursue his fetish in comfort is beyond me.

My old neighbor lost her SSI benefits when the govt found out she got married. She refuses to get certified as a home health caregiver so that she can bill medicare for taking care of her parents and grandmother because it might prove that she’s not disabled.

He has obviously does not have a disability. Should SS payments be handed out to anyone who threatens to kill themselves? No. While I think it’s sad that he has to make an ultimatum that’s his choice as an obviously functional adult that has made a decision to not work and live off of society.

I’m stunned, watching this. I actually went out to watch the entire video from it. It doesn’t get better. They had some men who dress up as women in Japan, one was an alpha and beta male because he’s a kick boxer who could probably take us all down. They had some women in the US who play mommy to fake dolls because they unfortunately can’t have their own biological children and express the emotions through other avenues, I personally pray that if I were ever in such a situation, my future-wife and I would have the strength to adopt instead of playing parents to dolls. Another was a man who sells sex entertainment products on Second Life, which brings me to another idea.

I’m not really for an Orwellian Government, but I would like to know how many people on government handouts play the MMORPG or spend money on Second Life. I’m not in favor of paying for their entertainment when those require more dedication then being a greeter at Walmart. I think our economy suffers from the lack of a basics-class, we’ve shipped some tasks that anyone can do out to China, since the educated won’t do it, and the not-too-bright are getting paid to not work.

I agree. Most Americans are incapable of running their lives nor should be trusted to have a say in anything, and lack any sense of responsibility, so the rest of us have to decide for them…what rights they have/don’t have, who can vote and who can’t, what they should get paid depending upon their contribution to society/abilities…

We have to stop these Socialists dead in their tracks.

Nah, this is beneath even Omega rating…sub-Omega maybe. Like I implied before, this catagory should be better drawn from somewhere in the psychiatric ward.

I agree. Most Americans are incapable of running their lives nor should be trusted to have a say in anything, and lack any sense of responsibility, so the rest of us have to decide for them…

Dr. ZhivBlago on May 19, 2011 at 12:30 AM

That’s silly. We all have the rights spelled out in the Constitution. But we don’t have a right to food and housing or to be cared for like a baby thru our middle age. I’m not interested in making decisions for lazy people, or any other people, for that matter. I have enough trouble with my own life.

So, in effect the Constitution does entitle them to be on the dole, because to tell them that they can’t have free money via the government and what they have to do to survive and contribute to society is un-Constitutional?

Dr. ZhivBlago on May 19, 2011 at 1:25 AM

If he wants to claim this “disability” then he should be declared legally incompetent and unable to sign contracts, checks, credit cards, etc.

He wants to be a baby, fine, make him someone’s ward and declare him incompetent.
