New progressive ad: Paul Ryan literally pushes grandma off a cliff

posted at 6:35 pm on May 18, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via the Weekly Standard, we’ve joked about this sort of liberal messaging before but I honestly didn’t think we’d see it. Surely, after years and years of leftist whinging about “the politics of fear,” they wouldn’t resort to imagery of Republicans actually killing frail old ladies.

And yet here we are.

Philip Klein, who’s more in touch with economic reality than the authors of this spot, wonders when we’ll see an ad showing granny pushing kids off a cliff as an homage to the unsustainability of Boomer-heavy Medicare rolls. Would that ad be accurate, though? Young adults are famously pro-Obama; they’re inviting their own fleecing by supporting the guardian of an outdated, fiscally ruinous entitlement system. An ad that’s truer to life would have them tossing money at granny and then diving headfirst off the cliff voluntarily.

Time for the Republicans to makes some ads where bureucrats with clip boards walk into Grandma’s hospital room and check the box “Obsolete. Non producer” and turn off her respirator.

Time to play hardball.

If we do that, we become what we despise.
JetBoy on May 18, 2011 at 7:27 PM

I don’t know what this means. How do you “become” what you despise by employing its own tactics against it? This notion betrays a fundamental lack of confidence in your own belief system. I’m not going to become a Leftist by remorselessly attacking the Left. In fact, if I don’t I will become what I despise — a passive colluder or collaborator in my own and my country’s ruin.

And what Arnold Ziffel is suggesting is only the bare minimum. Yes, you run ads exposing what they’re doing. Yes, absolutely, you confront and call out the media for their bad-faith questions, and yes, you refuse to play along in their interrogator-captive, offensive-defensive dynamic that they’ve been submitting us to for 50 years. Orwell said, to win you must fight, and when you fight you will get dirty, there is no other way.

That would mean the GOP had a brass pair. At this point a brute force electron microscope couldn’t find their pair.

chemman on May 18, 2011 at 7:48 PM

Yeah, if the lies are powerful how much more is the truth? But where is the GOP? Asking Obama to lead maybe. Sending letters to the President or something. Having charts made, who knows.
Oh but no, when the Dems launch attack ads the GOP just sits there in shame with their heads hung low repeating over and over “We’re not racists!”

JellyToast on May 18, 2011 at 7:09 PM

Under current leadership, yeah, that’s the shape of it.

So long as the current crop of tools running the show, nothing’s going to change.

Fortunately, there’s a way to change things: Party mutiny.

Time to make them the governors of a tiny island in the political high seas…

I’m guessing this was the brainchild of some Dem operative who doesn’t understand the fundamentals of advertising. No one is every convinced by ads like this. In fact, I’m willing to bet a lot of people will think it’s supposed to be a joke.

And no, Republicans shouldn’t respond in kind. This isn’t tough, it’s childish. It makes them look foolish.

Dee2008 on May 18, 2011 at 7:54 PM

When thinking about our moderate, get along candidates, reflect also on the type of Supreme Court nominations they would make if they became president. I don’t find that to be a comforting exercise.

Thanks Kensington, and I repeat:
What still disgusts me is that the GOP/republicans/RINO’s, call them what you want cause they are all pretty much the same, spineless/scared/wimpy, will NEVER do anything to fight back. They still think that they can “shake hands”, “discuss things”, “put it on the table and make nice”, etc. This is despicable….and NONE of them will ever take it to the max and start kickin back. I am truly sick and tired of their BS and am lookin for some kickin @ss…..man, is there even ONE person out there with the cajones to do that? Grrrrrrrr, frustration is killin me *rant off*

Murf76 on May 18, 2011 at 8:00 PM

If I were a “Liberal” this ad would make me angry and sick. To villify your fellow Americans with such outlandish, misrepresentative propaganda is not just wrong. It’s anti-American.

KMC1 on May 18, 2011 at 8:17 PM

What’s funny about this?

Our side dumped on Sarah Palin for using “crosshairs” on a map to denote Congressional seats targeted for taking.

The left won’t do a damn thing about this.

And the next time a conservative even gets near the line – you can bet the RINO’s of the party will be right there to chastise him again.

In all – we deserve to keep losing. We’re not willing to fight.

HondaV65 on May 18, 2011 at 8:20 PM

That is one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen. But then I’m an elder and veterans advocate who spends all day representing, defneding and protecting them (as much as I am able) so how anyone could conceive portraying that is simply beyond my comprehension.

It is revealing though, isn’t it? The Agenda project has no problem envisionsing and emulating pushing granny off the cliff. Doesn’t bother them a bit. Sick, sick, sick.

JustTruth101 on May 18, 2011 at 8:29 PM

(sigh) yet another new low from the far-left Libtard limousine-liberal progressive communist socialist fascist Democrat Party.

A more accurate depiction would have an ad showing the millions of Useful Idiots that vote Democrat jumping off the cliff like the mindless lemmings they are.

Dumbasses, dullards, dimwits, dupes —-> Democrat. It’s no surprise that all the names describing dumb people begin with D.

CatchAll on May 18, 2011 at 8:32 PM

And yet here we are.

Why waste words when the people clearly refuse to listen; eventually you have to resort to force. But, remember, it’s for the good of the country.

Something Lenin or Pelosi would say.

New progressive ad: Paul Ryan literally pushes grandma off a cliff

Just watched the ad. LOL

The far-left’s complete lack of anything approaching adult Homo Sapens rationality in their discussion will be their political undoing. Mark my words.

In the meantime, what a crappy thing to do to Paul Ryan.

inviolet on May 18, 2011 at 8:54 PM

Here’s the proper response ad: Social Security and Medicare as old, propeller-driven aircraft with engines putting out clouds of black exhaust, flying further and further over the ocean of the future–without enough fuel. And who would insist that we keep flying these programs? Why, the government that cares more about protecting its airline than about protecting the passengers.

njcommuter on May 18, 2011 at 9:25 PM

Sadly, the GOP will do nothing as usual. And to think, they could invest a little into a rapid response team to counter these types of ads. Even more, Obama and the democrats have handed them a silver platter overflowing with stupidity that could make a mini-series of ads to attack the dems with their own words, but no…”if we just be nice to them….” Yeah, that didn’t work with democrats and terrorists either.

BruthaMan on May 18, 2011 at 7:42 PM

Republicans cannot respond in kind because the playing field is not level. The old media would go nuts if they did, call it an outrageous slander, lies, etc, as they always do. As someone else noted, it would be the Palin blood libel all over again. It’s not fair, but it’s the field we have to play on.

Part of the reason the Tea Party sprang to life. We are as disgusted with the GOP establishment as we are with Democrats. We are just more willing to give them a chance to move toward us. To date they have only given lip service to conservatism. Like Newt, they think they are just too damned smart for the rest of us to appreciate.

SKYFOX on May 19, 2011 at 7:10 AM

Loathsome. Response should be an ad with “progressives” and their SUV/Priuses getting dumped into giant potholes by trucks driven by grandma and a 55-year-old state bureaudrone retiree with golden goose benefits (and healthcare!) for the next 40 years. The roads aren’t being maintained because the money goes to entitlements and public sector pensions. It’s really worse this year, way beyond the normal springtime crumble. Must be lots of corner-cutting with materials too because the shoulders, which probably have zero priority, seem to be particularly bad. The road crews aren’t keeping up. Sorry for swerve off-topic but it’s all of a piece. They say that if you’re against high taxes the you must not want roads. Well, hale, give us the roads.

curved space on May 19, 2011 at 7:28 AM

This ad was about Ryans’ plan? Visually it looked like it was about Obamacare death panels.

Coronagold on May 19, 2011 at 8:11 AM

This is why the libs have it all over the conservatives, they are willing to go over the top. I would have made an ad showing Obama passing out little red pills to seniors in a row of hospital beds while in the back ground you see white coated people pulling the sheets up over there heads. After all he did say that rather then do hip replacements maybe it would be better to just give grandma a pill.

pwb on May 19, 2011 at 8:30 AM

Conservatives expect hate and fear from the progressives. That is all they have. If they can’t incite hate and fear, they resort to bribing voters with “distribution of wealth” and governmental handouts to buy their votes.

CurtZHP on May 18, 2011 at 8:39 PM

Reminds me of the movie The Matrix.

I would’ve created a white environment all the way with the “death panel” on a long table (or amphitheater) with Grandma or Grandpa in front (a Vet behind them, so on and so forth) then naming her, age, illnesses and amt. to pay.

Grandma asks a couple of questions; then the death panel smacks the GAVEL and cuts off everything. NEXT!

ProudPalinFan on May 19, 2011 at 10:17 AM

An ad that’s truer to life would have them tossing money at granny and then diving headfirst off the cliff voluntarily.

The Obama supporters that you are talking about haven’t really started working yet. I’d say it would be more accurate to say that they are forming a congo line to push the people just in front of them off the cliff as a way to get granny’s approval of their party lifestyle.

Count to 10 on May 19, 2011 at 10:28 AM

Disgraceful, and a perfect example of the left’s idea of civility. As usual, it’s only uncivil if the republicans do it…. The media will be silent, and the GOP won’t have the cajones to take these haters to task. Sometimes I feel it’s hopeless. I saw the woman who did this on Cavuto yesterday. All she could do was prattle about her dead, 96 yr. old grandmother. Some of these people really need to be whacked.

ultracon on May 19, 2011 at 10:39 AM

Forgot one thing…. I’m sure George Soros is funding this disgusting display.

ultracon on May 19, 2011 at 10:40 AM

It is easy to attack the Ryan plan because he has offered one, a human and thus imperfect plan. The Democrat have decided not to make any alternative and rest on their Utopian tinted laurels.

An analogous video would be grandma sitting in her wheel chair while the flood waters slowly rise around her. Have Harry Reid or Obama occasionally enter the scene, first in boots, then waders and finally rowing away in a boat and each time assuring the old lady that they are working on a plan to rescue her and will present it in plenty of time to save her.

Because liberalism is a religion of cowards, this particular effort doesn’t list any funding sources. If I funded this airhead, I’d be so embarrassed that I wouldn’t want anyone knowing, either.

TexasJew on May 19, 2011 at 11:23 AM

This is hillarious!!!!

I hope they do more of these and the Republicans simply point out that his budget does not touch anything for people 55 and over.

Maybe that is the problem though. Most liberals are talking about grandma and when you have 3-4 generations of 13-14 year olds having kids, Grandma could be in her 30′s still!

jeffn21 on May 19, 2011 at 11:27 AM

When is the GOP going to respond with a “pushing the jobless/taxpayer off the cliff” ad?

http://hotair.com/?s=jobless

When ARE we going to attack them, instead of each other???

Miss_Anthrope on May 19, 2011 at 11:52 AM

2X4 up side the head message to Republicans: even Democrat neo-war-mongers know that when you need to bomb the enemy, you destroy his air-defense network first, to allow the bombers to get to the target.

Qadaffy = Obama

Air-defense = MSM

Bonus Tip: Republicans, most Americans would cheer lustily to see the MSM driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their trouser-crease-loving girly-men!

drunyan8315 on May 19, 2011 at 12:37 PM

Power Line checks in on this:

…our first impulse is to think that such a hateful lad must be produced by fringe characters who are unrelated to the respectable left. But no: the Agenda Project and its founder, Erica Payne, are entirely mainstream. The group’s web site informs us that Ms. Payne was Deputy National Finance Director for the Democratic National Committee during the 1996 presidential re-election campaign and is associated with such respectable institutions as Harvard’s Kennedy School. This kind of insanity is the only ammunition liberals have left.

Del Dolemonte on May 19, 2011 at 6:53 PM

I have an idea for a attack ad on democRATs.
Just make a line of 2K + companies or Barrack supports where they make their way to the front of the line and “pay” BO or the “RATS” their money and thats how you get out of ObamaCare. Then ask the ? “how will you & your family get out?”
It would be really effective .
