Gingrich spokesman: The Beltway “literati” elite are trying to destroy him; Update: Spokesman’s statement going viral; Update: Rush Limbaugh responds
posted at 4:38 pm on May 18, 2011 by Allahpundit
No foolin’. After two and a half days of withering criticism from every corner of conservative media, from talk radio to print publications to right-wing blogs various and sundry, Team Newt’s strategy now is to shrug off the attacks as … typical D.C. insider ruling-class folly.
We’re all RINOs now, my friends.
When asked by The Huffington Post about media coverage this past week, Gingrich press secretary Rick Tyler fired off a response blasting the political and media elite.
“The literati sent out their minions to do their bidding,” Tyler wrote. “Washington cannot tolerate threats from outsiders who might disrupt their comfortable world. The firefight started when the cowardly sensed weakness. They fired timidly at first, then the sheep not wanting to be dropped from the establishment’s cocktail party invite list unloaded their entire clip, firing without taking aim their distortions and falsehoods. Now they are left exposed by their bylines and handles. But surely they had killed him off. This is the way it always worked. A lesser person could not have survived the first few minutes of the onslaught. But out of the billowing smoke and dust of tweets and trivia emerged Gingrich, once again ready to lead those who won’t be intimated by the political elite and are ready to take on the challenges America faces.”
This reads like some sort of generic statement his team prepared months ago to be rolled out as necessary if/when the media zeroed in on him but which they forgot to update for the present circumstances. For starters, there’s no one in the race, Barack Obama included, who’s more of a D.C. insider than Newt. In an alternate reality, in fact, that would be one of his selling points — that he knows how things work in Washington so there’ll be no learning curve if we elect him. Two: The whole reason he’s under fire is because, unlike Ryan, it seems he’s not “ready to take on the challenges America faces.” At a moment when conservatives are desperate to repair the country’s fiscal damage, his big contributions thus far are (a) sneering at Ryan on national TV for engaging in social engineering, much to the delight of Democratic ad-makers, and (b) allegedly telling Republicans on the Hill that they shouldn’t “be messing with entitlements.” When I think “disrupting a comfortable world,” I … don’t think Gingrich. Three: The bit about establishment cocktail parties is so trite — and so guaranteed to offend his conservatives critics who love to toss it at liberals and RINOs like yours truly — that it now almost seems like he’s trying to antagonize conservative media. Who does he think is attacking him because they’re secretly fretting about their inclusion in the Georgetown social scene? Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin? Good lord. (See you at the next Frum shindig, fellas!)
Old theory: Gingrich tweaked Ryan to pander to seniors but misjudged the ferocity of the backlash and then frantically tried to undo his critique. New theory, per his spokesman’s statement: Gingrich actually wants to lose, for reasons unfathomable to me. Anyone care to hazard an explanation? While you ponder, via Mediaite, here he is on Greta last night insisting that he’s now walked his initial criticism back to the point that Democrats would be engaged in falsehood if they merely quoted it. Huh?
Update: The spokesman’s bizarre, tone-deaf rant is now officially the meme du jour among D.C. politicos. The guy’s reduced himself to a laughingstock.
Update: Tomorrow’s show should be good:
Talk show host Rush Limbaugh responded sarcastically this afternoon to a suggestion from Newt Gingrich spokesman Rick Tyler that Gingrich’s critics — Limbaugh prominent among them — are simply members of an elite Beltway cocktail party circuit.
“Actually, I am part of the constitutional, free market, individual liberty circuit,” Limbaugh said in an email to POLITICO.
A good point from Ace: The spokesman’s statement really is a perfect illustration of Rich Lowry’s point that Newt seems incapable of polite disagreement, even with his own side. If you’re against him, only a lambasting will do. Even if it’s ruinous to his electoral prospects.

I think he should have simply apologized and taken a few days to think about what he said and why people were angry.
Because I don’t think Newt is really a big government guy.
I just think the political waters are really really unforgiving these days.

I am not a fan of Paul Ryan. I don’t think he is the fiscal conservative he claims to be. His voting record doesn’t support it. I also think his plan is overly optimistic and doesn’t go far enough.
What Newt did was to attack Ryan from the left claiming it went too far when its very obvious to the vast majority of people that we need to take action. He placed himself with the leftists and is rightly getting treated as one.

Newt either attacked him on purpose for no reason or is too thick to realize he was attacking him rather than having thoughts he should have kept to himself.
Both scenarios are bad.

arnold ziffel on May 18, 2011 at 6:27 PM
Newt is too thin skinned. He doesn’t need to be responding to every criticism. He needs to study up on policy, and get back some credibility after a terrible interview. He might be ready in 2016. Newt’s position is as Kingmaker, he is not presidential.
portlandon on May 18, 2011 at 6:28 PM
There is a reason why campaigning so early in the POTUS sweepstakes is such a bad idea.

In this day of high national debt, Ryan isn’t ‘boy wonder’ he is speaking the stark truth. He is the only politician that has developed a real path to solvency. No one else has even come close.
One place ‘vouchers’ have been used in the public arena is education. ‘Vouchers’ worked in DC Public Schools until Obama and the Democrats legislated it away(to much uproar).
Vouchers provide a way for a tax payer to have input on how to invest their own tax dollars. Vouchers, per say, introduce liberty. Giving a person liberty to choose what is best for themselves works every time it is tried.

I was just thinking about this issue, which could otherwise be stated as: Are we being too hard on Newt?
My answer is No. While all candidates may make mistakes, Newt’s statement was a premeditated nasty elitist shot not just at Ryan but at the Republican party itself. I am sure many of us have substantial respect for Ryan because of the work put into his plan, which completely takes away the long-standing democrat line that the Republicans are just the party of No. This was not just a slip of the tongue. Rather, it was a scurrilous, malicious attack on a non-opponent in an attempt to posture himself as a great mediator. This is just what Obama does, always using rhetoric to pretend he is in the middle and therefore deserving of deference.
So, I don’t think that “this type of thing” will happen to all of the Republican candidates.

Keep running, Newt. You screwed up Sunday, IMO, and too IMO, you’ve made mistakes by hanging with Nan and Al, and personal mistakes also, but who hasn’t made personal mistakes. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone at you. Yet through it all, Newt, you are STILL more conservative than 90% of the GOP and frankly virtually-if not literally- all the potential GOP nominees for next year; and there’s validity to the inside the beltway (and the DC-Boston bubble crowd) BS allegation you make. They are attacking you like nobody’s business. Other equally egregious conservative apostacies have gone much less remarked upon with the kind of scorn you are receiving from the chatterers and bloviators and various other soreheads and Beta males. So, I say keep running Newt. We need you in the debate. Your plan is a good one. We can talk further about Ryan’s plan and what you meant compared to what I heard. I still don’t understand, but as the great Ronaldus Magnus said, anyone that agrees with me 80% of the time is on my team (or something like that). So run Newt. Even though I’ve been peeved at you mightily recently, and wish you’d show a little less pugnacity and do some humble mea culpas right now, I still want you in this thing. D@mn the critics! Keep your head up. You are needed and are the most accomplished conservative in the race. Who else has achieved what you have that is running? No one. That’s fact. I feel sorry for Gingrich however if some eunuch twit like Gregory can elicit this type of response from Newt, he owns it as well as that big sucking sound of the People’s confidence in his ability to do what needs to be done. If you advertise a burger, when my money hits that counter it better damn well be a burger and not chicken wings.
