Huckabee to announce decision on campaign tomorrow; Update: Ed Rollins thinks he’s not running

posted at 1:44 pm on May 13, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Looks like announcement season has heated up.  Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul both made announcements this week, and Herman Cain has a rally scheduled in eight days for his formal announcement.  Now the producer of Mike Huckabee’s television show says that the 2008 GOP runner-up will use his show tomorrow night to announce … something:

Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, will announce on Saturday whether he will run for president, the producer of his show on the Fox News Channel said Friday.

“Governor Huckabee will announce tomorrow night on his program whether or not he intends to explore a presidential bid,” Woody Fraser, the executive producer of “Huckabee” said in a statement. “He has not told anyone at FOX News Channel his decision.”

Senior political aides to Mr. Huckabee also said Friday they do not know what he will decide, raising suspicions that Mr. Huckabee will take a pass on another campaign.

If he’s announcing an exploratory committee launch, then it will be his last show for the next 18 months, at least.  Fox had supposedly been pressuring Huckabee for an answer (which Huckabee denied).  If he wants to take the pressure off and stay out of the race, then a quick announcement on a Saturday night makes a lot of sense.

On the other hand, Huckabee does pretty well in polling, usually running neck-and-neck with Romney for the top spot.  Not too many people would pass on that kind of opening, not unless they really didn’t want to spend the next year fighting for the nomination.  That kind of temptation would normally keep someone in the maybe column for as long as possible.

Last thought: Michael Shear sounds pretty skeptical in his report that Fox would allow any of its contributors to launch a campaign on their platform, which Republican strategist Ed Rollins also questions.  They probably wouldn’t mind the ratings, but I’d guess that Shear and Rollins are correct, and that Huckabee will take a pass.

Update (AP): If he’s running, he’s kept it an awfully tight secret:

Ed Rollins, who directed his 2008 campaign and has been organizing his 2012 campaign-in-waiting, said he has not been consulted.

“I’ve heard nothing, which indicates to me he’s not running,” Mr. Rollins said in an interview…

“He has by far the clearest path to the nomination of all the 2012 candidates,” one of the would-be Huckabee team said.

But several member of the inner circle said Friday that they had no knowledge of what Mr. Huckabee planned to announce, and were dumbfounded that he had kept his own would-be campaign in the dark. Mr. Huckabee has already seen most of his main operatives in Iowa and New Hampshire gobbled up by competing campaigns.

Rollins told the NYT, “There was a tremendous opportunity for him to be a viable, credible candidate. I think Mike has got unique talents but he just didn’t have the fire in the belly. I can’t want it more than the candidate does.” Either this is the head fake to end all head fakes or, yeah, he’s really not running. Having Huckabee swoop into Iowa and lock up a chunk of social conservatives would have made things very hard for Palin, especially since he’s got the skeleton of a successful state operation left over there from 2008 and she doesn’t. Now the social con field is wide open and waiting for a big name to enter. If she was thinking of staying out, this should tilt her in the other direction.

Update (AP): Thinking this through a bit further, if he’s really decided not to run, why announce it publicly now? The 2012 speculation is good for his media profile and, presumably, for his ratings. If the Fox people are pressuring him, he could reassure them privately that he’s sticking with his show; they have an incentive to keep that hush-hush for the same reason Huck does, to keep his name in the news. The only reason I can come up with is that he doesn’t want his 2008 team stuck in limbo when there are high-paying campaign jobs out there for the taking right now. But that only makes it stranger that he hasn’t tipped his inner circle to his decision yet. Unless he decided literally within the past few hours, he should have told them ASAP that they’re free to look for 2012 work elsewhere.

“I wonder if Huckabee would enter the race just to try and eliminate Romney from the election campaign.
Weebork on May 13, 2011 at 1:52 PM”

After Romney’s self destructive announcement yesterday, Huck now no longer has to run as a way of sticking it to ‘Rich Mitt the Mormon’ that Huck hates for both reasons. No offense to Arkansans generally, but why are the two most prominent pols from AR plaqued with feelings of inferiority to rich people and thus are obsessed with acquiring wealth themselves? And will do anything to get it?

Clinton craved the benjamins and Huck flat out hates Romney, in part because he’s rich. Huck is an execrable, religious bigot to boot. Let’s hope he saves us all a lot of nausea and decides to not run.

You and I are rarely here at the same time… and I’ve heard all the same thing over and over and over.

I’m so weary of the Palinistas.

But what is so very tiring is the gang behavior. So I will point it out when I can.

Palinistas are apparently pack animals. And they seem to have internalized Alinsky’s rules. They excel at singling out one person and attacking.

But if there is more than one… they usually will back off.

Palinistas are only happy when the numbers favor them at least 2 to 1. Then they are truly able to demonstrate the true nature of their version of “conservative” and “social conservative”.

They put the left to shame on their expert use of Alinsky tactics.

Don’t dismiss Cain’s appeal to social cons. Many feel burned by traditional politicians. And for what it’s worth, people in my church have been talking about Heman Cain for a while. I occasionally hear Sarah Palin’s name. No one ever mentions Huckabee.

flyfisher on May 13, 2011 at 2:23 PM

I’m a big Herman Cain fan. But let’s not sit here and pretend he’s not at best a long shot. Dude has never held elected office. While that is a virtue in some respects, when push comes to shove, a vast majority of Americans(and I’ll even include myself in that group) want their Presidential candidates to A) have served at least some time in public office and B) have shown the ability to win an election.

Then there’s the issue of money. He’s a successful businessman, but the guy ran Godfather’s Pizza. We’re not talking the founder of Papa John’s here. So he doesn’t have the personal fortune to finance his own campaign and I hate to say it, but most wealthy donors will line up behind a known commodity like Mittens or Daniels before writing a fat check for Cain.

And we can’t overlook the fact that he’s a cancer survivor. Stage IV, no less. That dogged McCain during the 2008 campaign(especially after he picked Palin as his running mate). Couple that with the fact that he’ll be nearly 67 come Election Day 2012, and I have a bad feeling he’s gonna be smeared in much the same way.

All these bin Laden news that are no-news and news that should not be out there are to benefit Democrats and Obama only.

Instead of sticking strictly to military information they are giving out stashes of it. Crashed black hawk is more important to me than all this mess. Now that country has a bargaining chip-keep it, show it off to China, get our stealth intelligence and kids got some skin/mesh to play with.

Jon0815 on May 13, 2011 at 2:40 PM

I didn’t say he had no shot. And certainly that debate did get him some much needed exposure. But look at who he was onstage with. That was the Tier 2 crowd, and I’d even include T-Paw in that category. Cain did well, but wasn’t great and he still managed to outclass everyone around him. That says more for the competition than the quality of his candidacy.

Once Mittens, Daniels, Newt, Bachmann, and/or Huckster show up at these debates, forget it. He’ll have to be superlative in order to command the spotlight. Or they’ll have to really suck, which is not the way I want Cain to win the nomination. Being the last man standing amongst a field of p-sspoor candidates is a recipe for disaster.

BTW, I intentionally left Palin out of that group of prospective candidates because I believe that if she enters the race, Cain is finished as a contender. She’d steal the Tea Party crowd, and her rockstar status would easily eclipse his.

Huckabee is atypical, most social cons are also fiscal cons and I think Cain will get a lot of attention from them. They aren’t going to be excited by Daniels, Mitt, or Pawlenty, so I think Cain at least has the potential to breakout. I am certain he will have appeal with social cons in the racist, white, redneck South.

Thanks for asking! After several intense headaches, body out of whack, a medicine was not working and Mr. PPF almost over the edge with me, I had a physical done. I mean I had the Dr. check me on anything and everything. Divine Providence squeezed me in with the Dr. to get me something else.

To add insult to the injury, I had a root canal this week and yesterday a headache so bad it was from the right side of the back of the neck all the way up to my right eye. Tylenol didn’t fix it, Aleve didn’t fix it, can’t take aspirin b/c of the root canal so I go my nuclear way:

Tiger Balm on the forehead with a bandanna wrapped around my head VERY tight and move it around where the pain is. That’s the only way I could sleep last night.

Now as I type on this I feel another headache coming up. I stepped off reading and took another Aleve. If this happens tomorrow I will check with the neurologist b/c he knows about this but this doesn’t have anything to do with my epilepsy.

I joke with Mr. PPF that it’s time to “trade me in”. This morning my sis and I were joking about pulling a “Michael Jackson” on me, lol! According to lab work she told him he’s toast that I will make it till 80.

Cain would do fine down here in the South. The coastal elites really need to get their heads out of their collective you-know-whats. Louisiana has a Republican governor who’s Indian. So does South Carolina. New Mexico has a GOP Latina governor. Tim Scott and Col. West are both black men who won House races as Republicans in the South. Marco Rubio won a Senate seat by knocking off a white(sort of) Republican in Florida.

Newsflash to the drive-bys. We don’t give a crap about people’s skin color! If Herman Cain or anyone else gains traction, it’s because of what they say, not how they look.

upinak on May 13, 2011 at 2:59 PM

Obviously you are talking about something I don’t remember.

I don’t remember having a conflict with you.

See I don’t take names… I respond to what people say.

I do now recognize several people here. But I don’t remember you in particular and don’t think you were around a few weeks ago when I realized that this is so very personal and that people aren’t just shooting the breeze about possilve canidates and their strengths and weaknesses.

I found out that this is apparently war talk. And if you aren’t for Palin you are against her.

I learn this over and over. It makes so little sense to me. I just don’t see her as any different than the others and her weaknesses out weigh her strengths for me.

So the passion with which she is defended is shocking.

And any stray word is considered a mortal sin worthy of damnation.

But I’m soon to go back to what I do when it becomes clear that nothing has changed with her supporters… and stop mentioning her.

Which is what I think happened in that Romney thread yesterday. I mentioned her in a string of other names, and got back a very strong accusation of my treachery, with her name highlighted and the other names as though they didn’t exist!

Then the next ten pages were all about Palin.

It is so shocking to just want to talk about canidates and get such strong reactions!

You guys say plenty of very very repulsive stuff about all the others but nobody reacts the way you do.

petunia on May 13, 2011 at 3:27 PM

Doughboy on May 13, 2011 at 3:14 PM

Agreed! I have only been to one Tea Party event in Mississippi, but there were a number of blacks both in attendance (say 25% of the crowd) and speaking from the stage. The show stopper was a fiery black lady who laid into liberalism with an eloquent fury few could match. Her defense of freedom was worldclass, on par with Mark Levin.

She hates people who know anything about anything.

I don’t see Palin as all that honest either really. I don’t even like her well enough to track all the stuff.

I don’t know that I’d buy a car from her.

But I remember she was pretty dishonest

I think you all must feel sorry for her. Like she’s the ugly duckling running for homecomming queen.

She doesn’t even try to educate herself.

Why would anyone think that?

The first Tea Party I attended was in downtown H-Town on April 15, 2009. I was there with the wife and beside us was a black woman who looked like she was in her 30′s with her two young kids. Onstage speaking at the podium was a Cuban refugee. Anyone who insinuates there are no minorities at Tea Party rallies is a moron and a liar.

cynccook on May 13, 2011 at 3:34 PM

That’s not being critical of Palin. That’s insulting her as unserious and unqualified. And you don’t even offer up any argument to back up that insinuation. You merely refer to her name being floated as a Presidential contender as a “circus”. Why don’t you take a look at her record and point out what you don’t like? You know, so we can start to have a real discussion?

Doughboy on May 13, 2011 at 3:06 PM

Palin is not the circus.

You are the circus to which I was refering.

The inability to discuss her is a circus. And her supporters knee jerk calling of all the others RINOs is a circus.

If Palin would stop stringing everyone along we could actually talk about the candidates.

If she does run though… the campaign will become, well what it became before. The left will go nuts and no issues will be discussed at all.

sharrukin on May 13, 2011 at 3:32 PM

What is wrong with any of that really? You’ve said lots of stuff about other candidates every single day!

And I have apologized for saying she was weird several times. Several times… I meant her followers are weird!

And there were whole conversations between each of those statements.

And that was February 14th. I know, because, I had bad news that day and was in a particularly foul mood. It was months ago. And the next day I explained each and every statement three different times! Yet here it is again.

And yet… that is the worst I’ve said. Those are so mild compared to what you people say about other candidates all the time!

In fact, I think most of that is echoing stuff you all said about someone else first… I was mocking you with your own words! Turning it around and saying about Palin the stuff you say about others!

And somehow that means I hate her with a passion. Believe me if I hate someone with a passion I say much worse things than I don’t believe everything she says.

The car stuff I do remember was response to someone else saying that abot some other candidate. I don’t even know which one. It doesn’t matter! Why would it matter, months from now you may feel completely differently.

Yet if a non-positive word is said about Palin you keep it to use as evidence… for months even years! But I’m the mentally ill one?

If I cared about your opinion more I might keep what you say too. But I don’t.

And besides, in my book, you are allowed to say stuff inartfully and even be wrong, and I’m not going to mock you with it forever. Because that is childish.

This is that circus I would like to have over. If Palin would just drop out we could move on to more productive things rather than rehash late night ravings that have been talked about to death.

petunia on May 13, 2011 at 3:34 PM

What inability to discuss her? I don’t put her on a pedestal. I acknowledge her flaws, her imperfect record, her low poll numbers with independents, and the hurdles she’ll have to overcome if she seeks the nomination and the Presidency. If you wish to discuss those things, DISCUSS!!! But stop offering up insults toward her or her supporters on here as your argument against her candidacy. I’ll ask again, what is it about her record or her stated policy positions that you don’t like? If you’d offer something in response, we could have that real discussion you claim you’re seeking.

With regard to her stringing people along, it’s May 13, 2011. We have nearly a year and a half til the damn election. Newt just announced a couple days ago. Huckster will make some sort of announcement tomorrow. Mittens is still not officially in. So if these serious candidates aren’t guilty of jerking us around, then why is Palin? If she’s still non-committal come late summer or early fall, then you can make a case for that.

And spare me your feigned concern that the 2012 election might not be about issues due to Palin’s presence. She’s the one politician out there who’s discussed nothing but issues for 2 years now! In her books, Facebook posts, tweets, and interviews, she’s covered Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Egypt, gas prices, food prices, quantitative easing, job creation, the deficit, Obamacare, the Tuscon shooting, domestic energy production, taxes, crap-and-betrayed, and the debt ceiling. There are problem a hundred other topics I’m leaving out, but if you’re unfamiliar with her comments on any of those, it’s due to your own ignorance, not her “circus” of supporters.

Not to mention that the Dems would love to discuss anything BUT issues come 2012. You think they want to be forced to talk about Obama’s record? About their handling of the economy? About the unemployment rate? About the prices at the pump and supermarket? About the deficit? About how we’re still in Afghanistan, Iraq, and now Libya? About how the border is still unsecure and we have a damn drug war spilling over into our country? Please. No matter who the Republicans nominate, the Obama reelection campaign will consist of 2 themes: 1) Obama got bin Laden and 2) the GOP is full of extremists, racists, and hatemongers who want to kill old people.

Absolutely, IF there is any announcement coming on his show, it will be that he is NOT running.

Thank goodness. Other than being consistent on life and social issues, Huckabee isn’t conservative in many respects. A big government, big spending, big taxing type of guy, who also tends to inspire the baser instincts among the evangelical Protestants who follow him.

Good riddance, Huck! And now that Romney has effectively killed his own chances, the field is pretty wide open, and that isn’t a bad thing at all, despite the lamentations of those who keep expecting another Reagan to pop up out of nowhere to lead us to the Restoration.
