Fineman: Obama will have to run on “values”

posted at 9:30 am on May 12, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

The eminences grises at MSNBC see a serious problem ahead for Barack Obama in 2012.  Why, some voters might just judge him on his … performance!  Quelle horreur! Howard Fineman tells Chris Matthews on Hardball that Obama made a strategic error when he said that voters could judge him on how well he did his job.  That’s an error?  Isn’t that what voters are supposed to do with incumbents?  No, explain Fineman and Matthews — incumbents are supposed to talk values (via Newsbusters and Blue Collar Todd):

Values, eh?  Does this mean Obama wants to reopen the debate over Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers again?  How about last night’s poetry reading from Common, a rapper that celebrated a convicted cop-killer, who came to the White House during a week that honors fallen police officers? If we’re going to have a debate on values, after all — a debate that the Obama campaign declared illegitimate in 2008 — then these are open topics for the discussion.

As for me, I’d rather talk about performance, as it’s much more germane to an incumbent with four years of failure for which to account.  And it speaks volumes that the liberals at MSNBC want to talk about anything but performance.

In other words, rerun the 2008 campaign, because Lord knows Obama did not even have a record to run on. Now it’s up to the media to occlude the record he actually has.

How about last night’s poetry reading from Common, a rapper that celebrated a convicted cop-killer, who came to the White House during a week that honors fallen police officers?

Yeah, how about that?

Thoroughly reprehensible. Vile. If it weren’t for low class, he wouldn’t have any class at all.

Please let him run on his values rooted in Black Liberation Theology. It will be quite a show.

mizflame98 on May 12, 2011 at 9:35 AM

Values… like, empty phrases such as Hope & Change? I think they got all the mileage possible out of that. Maybe we could talk about the backgrounds of all those terrific people he’s surrounded himself with.
Dusty, you’re right, the guy’s screwed. Unless this country already is.

Dusty on May 12, 2011 at 9:32 AM

Actually, only half true. Out of one side of his mouth, he speaks values that the hard left espouses and that most Americans abhor (at least when they stop to think about it), but out of the other side of his mouth, he speaks values that most Americans (other than the hard left) support.

The objectionable thing is that Obama acts only upon the first set of values and disregards the second set of values.

BuckeyeSam on May 12, 2011 at 9:40 AM

Run on values? Would that be more like Chicago values or Marxist values? Or both, like Jeremiah Wright’s values.

petefrt on May 12, 2011 at 9:41 AM

Silly Howard. In the upcoming 2012 campaign, Team Obama isn’t going to talk about “values”; they’re going to talk about race — specifically, how whomever the Republicans nominate (even Herman Cain) hates minorities, along with women, children and small pets, and would be so horrific as president the only option is to re-elect Barack “He Killed Osama” Obama, no matter how bad the economy is.

jon1979 on May 12, 2011 at 9:41 AM

Let them try to squirm off of the hook. This president has got nothin. Not one thing to run on. President Zero comes to mind.

Yes, by all means, let’s talk about how entrenched he is in Uncle Jeremiah’s Black Value System. And maybe Obama could invite Bill Ayers to come up on stage and stomp on some of those flags he features so prominently in the background.

I do agree with you on that. My use of espouses was inappropriate in that Obama is a 21st century Janus. But even that is a value from which the public recoils.

If you can’t convince them with the facts, then baffle them with bullsh*t. Howard doesn’t seem too excited about picking up that shovel, but he’s letting the rest of the MSM know that they’re all going to have to wade deep into the pile if they want to get their guy re-elected.

Obamas Values:

A.) Americans are imperialists and must be punished

B.) Jews are evil and must be thrown out of their indigenous homeland in Israel, by force of US military if necessary

C.) Capitalism is evil and all those (who are not adequately progressive) rich bastards that vote Repbublican must have their assets seized

D.) Race is the most important issue in politics

E. Individuals must sacrifice their rights for the good of the state, and of course, the personal bank accounts of the state leaders

Cue the Captain Renault video. This is just shocking! Hey, let’s ask the three million out of work how they “value” Obama’s performance. Or, how we’ll “value” having our cell phones bugged by the federal government next year. Food and gas prices are certainly “a value” every American was longing to endure. Don’t forget to post your golf scores Mr. Obama—a “valuable performance” should be shared with your electorate.

This. Why does the left avoid discussing the merits of conservative arguments? Because they lose on the merits every time. So all they have left is to accuse their adversaries of bigotry, intolerance, and prejudice. By the time Janeane Garofalo made her stupid comments about the tea party in April of 2009, that whole line of rhetoric had already been rendered impotent, because apart from lacking substance, it isn’t true.

Steve Z on May 12, 2011 at 10:10 AM

Yeah, and Clinton tried to hijack the values thing too.

He talked about “Those things that we value.”

But what did Bill Clinton value?

His wife? Nope. Just ask Monica.
Truth? Nope, the single biggest indicator that Clinton was lying was moving lips.
Faith? Are you kidding?

Clinton valued one thing and one thing only. Power.

Obama appears to have decent family values; however, he would have supported Michelle’s decision to have abortions had she wanted to do that.

Bishop on May 12, 2011 at 9:45 AM

I believe it’s intentional. It’s used to solidify the youth vote that celebrates an “in your face” attitude, which some of them actually believe and others go along with. It’s also used to solidify the votes of all the others who revel in victimhood–blacks, other minorities who buy into victimhood, gays, and the like. That way, when conservatives object, the WH gets to paint them as racists.

In the end, I ask myself about a person, would I like them as a neighbor. I would love to have the families of Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, Allen West, and Herman Cain in my neighborhood. But if Obama ever lived in my neighborhood, I would have nothing to do with him.

BuckeyeSam on May 12, 2011 at 10:17 AM

Chicago values. Pay to play.

seven on May 12, 2011 at 10:30 AM

Its a trap!

“Values” is the narrative Dems need to persue – due to the dismal performance of Obama and Dems.

Once Reps start playing the “values game” – you will lose in todays America – whether right or wrong – because no matter what the truth or facts are – Dems have MSM cover to define their “values” as noble, socially consciuos, etc, etc… which segues nicely into racial and class warfare – their only (and desperatly unethical) shot in 2012.

Remember folks – Rangel, Waters get slaps on the wrist for blatant ethics violations – yet nothing happens, no outcry, no removal talks,, no – Dems just push them out of the spotlight and they say “sorry”

DeLay, Newt on teh other hand – tried to defend their “stepping down due to values” and got toasted – and continue to to this day.

Stay away from “values” (no matter how convicted you are to them) – for they are nothing more than a Trojan Horse of hypocrisy, aka the Dem playbook and failure for Reps.

Remember folks – America elected the most “non value” guy in American histroy for POTUS, just 2 1/2 years ago.

Black liberation theology (Due to white rule, necessary evil)
Gay marriage (state by state issue – no longer a big federal one)
Encouraging illegal aliens (American dream says so)

SEIU favorite! (unions are the backbone of America)
Redistribution of wealth (Said on campaign trail – no one cared)
Social justice (ats all justice if social)
Global Warming is real (All scientists agree with us, if not – they arent scientists or get Exxon lobby monies)

UltimateBob on May 12, 2011 at 11:43 AM

0bama “VALUES”..like:

1. Busting actual terrorists is nowhere near as important as feeling up regular airline passengers and putting government hands down the pants of grandmothers, infants, and 6-year-old girls.

2. The best energy policy is to shut down all domestic exploration and production, subsidize foreign production, and force spending on genuinely-quixotic “windmill energy”. Americans don’t really need energy.

3. So what if Texas is burning? Federal aid only goes to Democrat states!

4. Voter fraud is unimportant if the perpetrators are black and/or union members.

5. Let’s levy a “Caucasian Tax” on tanning salons.

6. Move all medical decisions out of the doctor’s office and have political appointees make them in Washington. And let’s fund some of this by stealing a half-trillion in funding from Medicare.

7. Let’s force banks to make bad loans, and then raise taxes to bail them out.

8. What’s wrong with illegal immigration?

9. What’s wrong with federally-mandated special rights for gays?

10. Approve a military Special Operation? It can wait while the president plays another round of golf.

11. Who cares about agriculture? Let’s shut it down in case it disturbs a fish or an insect.

12. Let’s shut down personal transportation by replacing real cars with golf carts and working to raise gasoline prices as high as possible. Double-digit food price increases are just an unimportant side effect.

Yeah…the voters will definitely want more of those values…

The most absurd part about this statement is that he thinks Obama’s values are the winning way to go. Let me refresh your memory about Obama’s values. Obama’s values support the government take over of health care in a non-Socialist Socialist move. Obama’s values support the bureaucratic control over every aspect of our lives. Obama’s values support the unions that are happy to work with Communists. Obama’s values Communist China as an example that the United States should follow. Obama’s values have lead to a tolerance of infanticide in the past. Obama’s values the normalization of homosexuality and the assault on traditional marriage. And finally, Obama’s values will lead to the persecution of Christians in this country. Yes, by all means focus on Obama’s values in the 2012 election, sounds like a winning strategy to me.
