Coming next: family visits at Gitmo?
posted at 12:15 pm on May 12, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
One of the key assets to the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay is its remote location. There are no roads to Gitmo, only sea and air passages that are heavily guarded by the US military. It isolates terrorist detainees in such a secure fashion as to keep them from communicating with outsiders without strict controls, and it keeps outsiders from crowding into the area and interfering with operations designed to keep the most dangerous terrorists captured in the war on terror secure and harmless.
So why not invite their families to drop in from time to time?
The Pentagon is considering allowing the families of detainees at Guantanamo Bay to visit them, an unprecedented step to ease the isolation of inmates who in some cases have been held at the U.S. facility for close to a decade, according to congressional aides.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which monitors conditions at the military prison in Cuba and facilitates videoconferences between detainees and their families, has been in serious discussions with the Pentagon about a visitation program, the aides said.
On one hand, as the Washington Post points out, this may be good news. If the Obama administration thought they could get Gitmo closed in the near- to mid-term future, they probably wouldn’t bother evaluating such a proposal. The lower-risk detainees would get sent home, where family visits would either be unnecessary or someone else’s problem, while the high-risk detainees (like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, for instance) would get sent to the US, where their families wouldn’t be allowed anyway.
On the other hand, Gitmo isn’t a civil prison. It’s a military detention facility that holds enemies of the United States. While we are obligated to treat them humanely, we are not obligated to set up visitation schedules and access to American military bases for their relatives. The Post reports that the idea would be to ask another country to stage the visitors, but who would that be? Does Mexico want families of jihadis gaining access to their country, and considering the state of security along our southern border, would we want that either? Other choices would be Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and, er, Venezuela, among others.
Republicans are now proposing to add a rider to the defense budget authorization that would prevent any money from being spent on Gitmo Visitor Days. If we can’t get common sense to prevail, then let’s make sure we don’t spend a cent on this silly idea.

It’s not that he’s disagreeing with Rand Paul. I’m totally cool with that(that’s why we call it a debate). But to act all condescending as if the entire thing was a political stunt is frankly what I’d expect from Obama, not the so-called Maverick of the Senate.

There’s no better example of the schism within the GOP then McCain and Graham’s shameless display here. The repudiation serves no purpose…the filibuster is over (and it didn’t even interrupt the glorious meal with the One), Brennan will be confirmed, and Obama will continue his policies, yet McCain felt the need to betray his colleagues on the same side of the aisle anyway. Lily on March 7, 2013 at 2:14 PM
The establishment doesn’t want Paul to catch fire and upset the applecart in 2016 is my best guess. No way would Graham and McCain have the stones to do this on their own without the leadership quietly backing them. Too bad (for them) that they’re doing it in such a ham-handed, incompetent way.
Classic example of RINOs reaching across the aisle to hug democrats while unleashing the venom on their own base. I wish these guys would just switch parties. Really, I wouldn’t even mind losing the seats at this point to just get them out.
Doomberg on March 7, 2013 at 2:14 PM
“If Mr. Paul wants to be taken seriously, he needs to do more than pull political stunts that fire up impressionable libertarian kids.”
Hmm, I’m pretty sure Rand Paul is taken seriously by everyone except the old republican coots in the senate.
But what would some of these things that he needs to do to be taken seriously, I wonder? Interviews on Jon Stewart? Defending The One at every turn? Or does he actually have to crash his plane and be tortured in a Vietcong prison, to be taken seriously?

He survived in 2010 because he had a lousy primary opponent(Hayworth was arguably a bigger spendaholic in Congress than McCain ever was), Palin’s support back when she was at her peak in popularity with the base, and he did a good job of pretending to rediscover his conservative principles(“build the damn fence”).
But come 2016, he’s gonna be pushing 80, Palin’s support(assuming he still has it) won’t mean d-ck, and he may not be as lucky to get such weak primary opposition. He’s not as vulnerable as Grahamnesty, but he’s getting there.

This is what McCain and RINOs like him think of us. We’ve got to realize that the best way to defeat these RINOs is to ignore them. Use our energy to lift up TEA Party voices like Cruz, Rubio, Rand Paul, Mike Lee, and the like.
The GOP will never win major elections when the public cannot tell the difference between a controlling-Lib and a weak-kneed RINO.

If Rand Paul wants to win the whole shebang, he needs to fire up impressionable kids. Yes. Also, funny that the 2 biggest rinos (other than Mr Hefty) and neocons in the Repub party are the ones leading the criticism of Paul. Judging by that, Paul must be doing something right.
And as importantly, Paul benefits by standing strong with apparent conviction for something, and especially for something that isn’t “the standard party line.” This is as good a spot as any to take a stand for something that isn’t the party orthodoxy. And if he’s going to be a libertarian, be a libertarian. At least people will have a sharp distinct choice, unlike in the case of Mr. Mush (our last presidential nominee). A lot of people want libertarian, and the conventional left – right political dichotomy would be blurred, and many independents that would otherwise vote democrat would say “you know what, lets give this libertarian thing a try.” And that’s why I hope Paul doesn’t back down on some of his more potentially controversial stands. Like on drugs. Majorities (see CO) are moving toward legalization, and Paul could stir up kind of a hornets nest among conservatives but he would ultimately benefit as millions of conservatives and independents would say in a kind of epiphany “you know what, Paul is right!” I just hope Paul has figured out a way to not come off as extreme on one issue that could hurt us: abortion. He needs ultimately to neutralize that issue.

Also, the less intelligent of them can be remarkably uncritical of the C-in-C, even after they are no longer under his command. I suspect this describes McCain.
