America’s newest grassroots movement: “Let James Tate go to the prom”

posted at 7:01 pm on May 12, 2011 by Allahpundit

To cleanse the palate. Last week, the Today show was covering Navy SEALs breaking into Osama Bin Laden’s compound and shooting him in the face. This week they’re covering this. The news cycle is a fickle mistress, my friends.

Here’s the Facebook page, which stands — no joke — at 143,000+ fans and counting. Connecticut’s biggest newspaper has already weighed in with an editorial in his favor. I figure he’s one NYT/WaPo puff piece away from galvanizing national momentum that’s every bit as formidable as, say, the Coffee Party’s. There’s just one thing I can’t figure out: Was his prom proposal the act of an alpha male or a beta? It seems distinctly, shall we say, Dobler-esque, which would place it in the latter category. But c’mon — it took guts, and was obviously the handiwork of a man who knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to risk rejection in front of the world. Besides, true beta males don’t go to their high-school proms; they go to … this. Don’t ask me how I know that. The less said, the better.

Mostly alpha. A pure alpha would have spray-painted it and then crashed the prom with his date, and would have afterwards gotten SERIOUSLY laid.

But yeah…this was taped-up cardboard. The principal of this school is a jerk.

So he got banned for using a ladder without the proper safety equipment? I can see telling him to go up there and take it down again.

mcg on May 12, 2011 at 7:12 PM

My last kid is a senior this year and I can tell you, school admins have NO sense of humor anymore. ANY senior prank, gets you banned from graduation. If you don’t have your student ID, you can’t get into prom. If your date is from another school or has graduated, you have to fill out a disclosure form and get permission.

The no tolerance crap has extended itself into no common sense about anything. I am so glad to be almost done with the school system!

Nah, true beta males skip prom and have their mom force them to go to “post-prom”…

The war on boys continues.

I just heard of a kid I’ve known for a decade– a good kid found repeatedly guilty of being a boy– who is spending his first night tonight away from home in the psych ward on a hold following a suicide attempt.

This IS important. Our boys won’t all be chicks, they’ll be dead or useless eunuchs.

500 years from now when historians try to figure out why a once great empire crumbled, this may be one of their sources.

angryed on May 12, 2011 at 7:27 PM

The alpha/beta question is decided purely not on the act itself, but how he handles the fallout/media circus. A humble apology mixed with a mincing “I never wanted to cause a problem, etc” is beta. Almost omega territory, given that it was all over a girl. A rakish, devil-may-care attitude indicating that he could care less about the school, the prom, or for that matter the girl is pure alpha. Extra points for hitting on any female reporters who interview him.

James Tate, meet Cory Worthington.

JetBoy on May 12, 2011 at 7:25 PM

A friend of mine actually got sent to one of those things. It was nudge, nudge, wink, wink… voluntary. Everyone attending thought it was a joke but the company thought it was a great idea.

Sending the kid to sensitivity training just too harsh in my opinion. A Caning would be kinder.

KSgop on May 12, 2011 at 7:14 PM

Prom is a wedding trial run for the ladies.

Guys don’t give a crap about prom. Only reason they put up with the nonesense is because there’s a better than 50/50 they’ll get some at the end of the night.

Just like with weddings the guys show up in a rented tux, are told where to stand for pictures, dance a little, have some drinks and count down the time until they go back to the hotel room. All the while being pissed off that they’re missing a playoff game.

Ladies on the other hand plan for months on the hair, the dress, the shoes, the makeup, the limo, all the while comparing notes with the others to make sure they’ve one upped their BFFs.

And like weddings, it ends up costing a small fortune that the father pays for.

angryed on May 12, 2011 at 7:33 PM

My God awful prom memories (read: bitterness) aside, this would have won me over. So, so incredibly cute. Shame on those administrators for not distinguishing between a true menace and a well-meaning kid. Stupid.

So sorry to hear. My mother works with a woman whose son hung himself at age 12 years. Because he peeked at a porn site and admitted his sin to school counselor. Said school counselor then called his father to report the infraction. The father proceeded to ridicule his step son in the presence of 3 other 12 year old middle school boys. They were sent home.

His mother later found him hanging in his room; self inflicted.

I have never felt such sorrow, especially as a parent who had to bury a child.

The Dept of Education must be abolished. It was started by a failed Statist named Jimmy Carter, and if we, as parents do nothing then we get what we deserve.

JetBoy on May 12, 2011 at 7:44 PM

I was expelled from high school six weeks before my graduation many moons ago for drinking a few wine coolers on an overnight trip. My buddy and I were told we were not going to be allowed to walk the line at graduation, nor take part in Class Night. I was eventually granted a voice in front of the school board to explain my case.

Long story short, I told the school board members that if my buddy and I didn’t get to partake in graduation, I’d drop the name of numerous outstanding football players, coaches and teachers that were well known to get drunk after football games and whatnot.

It was a unanimous decision. We both walked the line and got standing ovations when we did, to boot. (We were allowed to return for our finals and then escorted out).

So for the six weeks before graduation, we partied hard, went camping, and shot pool while everyone was still in class. A nice long Summer break before college started.

There are 6 other seniors being denied the ability to attend prom from this school (prison) as well this year. They had the temerity to put too many kids in the school elevator and it stopped between floors. Evil little bastards. I’m thinking this principle didn’t get asked to her prom and enjoys punishing every kid she can. What a jerk.

What would be nice to see is a boycott of the prom.

Let aroudn 10 – 15 couples show up.

Seriously, though, kid, just be a man and accept your punishment instead of being a whiner.

Sometimes life is tough.

Sometimes we make it tough on ourselves.

Hey, when you’re dealt the race card…

Schadenfreude, baby…

Bruno Strozek on May 12, 2011 at 8:07 PM

Stupid shyte like this is the reason I counted the days until I was out of high school. I understand there is a need for rules but it seems like all high school administrators have small, er, members and get their jollies from lording over the kids. The addition of some common sense would be greatly welcome. These are people who are just beginning to test out their own independence. They shouldn’t be allowed to run amok but they shouldn’t be shackled either. Let them have fun and express themselves. They have the rest of their lives to be under someone’s thumb, esp. if this country keeps going down the path it’s on.

Oh, and this:

Besides, true beta males don’t go to their high-school proms; they go to … this.

is about the saddest thing I’ve ever heard of.

Browncoatone on May 13, 2011 at 7:28 AM

Heterophobes! Sir, I’m apalled.
So why isn’t the ACLU pressuring the school over this boy’s rights as a heterosexual male or a lesbian trapped in a boy’s body, hmm?

…the ACLU demanded that officials change a policy banning same-sex prom dates because it said it violated students’ rights. The ACLU said the district violated McMillen’s free expression rights by not letting her wear a tux.
