Video: Jim Inhofe describes the Bin Laden death photos … in great detail

posted at 8:55 pm on May 11, 2011 by Allahpundit

Pretttttty thorough. Watch for the part where he explains to Shep that, yes, Bin Laden’s skull did seem to be intact but the bullet had exploded inside, forcing “the brain to come back out of the eye socket.” Duly noted, Senator.

Today we found out that, among the many other intel bits recovered at the scene by the SEALs, was Bin Laden’s diary. And as you might expect, OBL’s inner life was a lot like his outer life:

Strike smaller cities, bin Laden suggested. Target trains as well as planes. Above all, kill as many Americans as possible in a single attack.

Though he was out of the public eye and al-Qaida seemed to be weakening, bin Laden never yielded control of his worldwide organization, U.S. officials said Wednesday. His personal, handwritten journal and his massive collection of computer files reveal his hand at work in every recent major al-Qaida threat, including plots in Europe last year that had travelers and embassies on high alert, two officials said…

The information shatters the government’s conventional thinking about bin Laden, who had been regarded for years as mostly an inspirational figurehead whose years in hiding made him too marginalized to maintain operational control of the organization he founded…

In one particularly macabre bit of mathematics, bin Laden’s writings show him musing over just how many Americans he must kill to force the U.S. to withdraw from the Arab world. He concludes that the smaller, scattered attacks since 9/11 had not been enough. He tells his disciples that only a body count of thousands, something on the scale of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, would shift U.S. policy.

They can’t prove it yet but they think he might have had a hand in the Christmas Day bombing plot in 2009 as well, possibly because other parts of his journals highlight key holidays on the American calendar as prime dates to attack. Among them: Christmas, of course. In fact, there were other journals left at the compound that the SEALs either didn’t find or didn’t have time to grab. Pakistan has them now — and guess what:

The U.S. Navy Seals who killed Osama bin Laden recovered a number of the former al-Qaida leader’s journals at the Pakistan compound where he was hiding, but they were forced to leave behind detailed logs of bin Laden and al-Qaida activity that the Pakistanis have not yet shared, senior U.S. officials told NBC News on Wednesday.

It was not clear how much material was left behind when the Seals evacuated the compound in Abbottabad on May 1, but senior U.S. military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it could have been a substantial amount.

Once they’re done redacting all the names of ISI agents from the logs, maybe we’ll see them then. An interesting footnote to all this via CNN is that there are apparently no “smoking gun” details in the material we’ve recovered about looming Al Qaeda plots. There are “aspirational” elements, things he wanted to see happen, but evidently nothing concrete by way of operatives or plots in the works. That’s either a testament to Bin Laden’s discipline in keeping actionable intelligence out of his journals just in case (imagine his mindset knowing AQ couldn’t hit the U.S. mainland in 10 years) or proof that AQ’s international capabilities have been so thoroughly degraded that they’re not even fielding people inside the U.S. right now. Here’s hoping it’s the latter.

As for the Taliban’s reaction to his killing, I recommend this Time magazine piece. Some are treating it as a big “eh,” others have actually welcomed his death because they resent having lost Afghanistan in the name of sheltering him. That Osama — always so divisive.

Not uncommon, given how much velocity is lost by the rather light 5.56 NATO round, a massive amount of cavitation from the impact and only really the entry wound for the cavitation to escape to. So a round that makes it into the cranial cavity displaces the brain matter, but does not carry through the back of the skull, instead bouncing around like a little blender part.

I for one agree that the photos should not be released. No reason for UBL’s death mask to become some kind of rallying cry for our opponents. A picture is worth a thousand words, and only two of them are “American Superiority.”

No hollowpoints. Single NATO ball 9mm round to the upper left eye socket. That is a 124 grain copper alloy jacketed lead core bullet. Single 5.56mm NATO round to the chest, fired by a different team member. This is also a copper jacketed lead core bullet. It is illegal for our soldiers to use the hollowpoint ammo that our police and most civilians use for self-defense purposes.

He probably did. The attack originated with AQAP, which operates as a direct branch of al Qaeda central. Bin Laden and Zawahiri communicate with them via 2nd-level members who travel back and forth. While Awlaki was probably the organizer, I don’t don’t bin Laden was giving direction. Leah Farrell has a good analysis of al Qaeda’s organizational structure as it evolved after 9/11:

An eye shot is much preferred to a forehead or ear shot, if the goal is to preserve as much of the head/skull as possible, for a later ID of the Tango, or EKIA. The soft tissue of the eye allows for a much less abrasive entry into the brain, hence what was done here. While you and I are trained, as well we should be, for central body mass shots to assailants not likely to wear BPVs, elite SEALs like these are trained for head shots and specific ones depending on the desired result. Sometimes, you want post mortem ID and sometimes you don’t.

Police Arrest Leftwing Nut Liberal US Flag Burner – Frogmarch Him in Cuffs From Campus
Occurred On: May-11-2011
************************

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Isaac Eslava was upset over Bin Laden’s death so he cut down the US flag on campus and torched it.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Police found the LSU flag and drug paraphernalia in the stolen car that student Eslava was driving.

An LSU student wanted as a suspect in connection with the damage of the school’s war memorial, which included the burning of an American flag, has turned himself in to school police, according to More.. the university.

Isaac Eslava, 23, a resident of Baton Rouge was being sought for two counts of simple damage to property, one count of arson, one count of theft and one count of resisting an officer.

Eslava holds dual citizenship for the United States and Colombia. During the early morning hours of May 2, the LSU War Memorial was damaged. The flag mast rope was cut down, the United States flag set afire and the LSU flag stolen. An LSU staff member alerted LSU Police, who responded to the area. LSU Police located the suspect nearby, but was unable to detain him.

During this initial response, police recovered a stolen vehicle, which was used by the suspect. The LSU flag was recovered from inside of the vehicle along with drug paraphernalia, a clothing item belonging to the suspect, and red and black spray paint.

LSU Police Detectives later identified the suspect and recovered the knife suspected to have been used to cut the rope. The knife still had flag mast rope fibers along the blade. Detectives also learned that on the same morning The Venue Apartments located north of campus were vandalized by graffiti using red and black spray paint and were able to connect the suspect to the crime

9mm, 5.56×45, 7.62, .45 or .40 at close range there is no head left, and the SEAL’s don’t really play be the rules so hollow points are not out of the question.

Ruger MK2 + Navy SEALs

Suppressed variants
The suppressed Mk II is used by United States Navy SEALs and pest control officers.
The AWC TM-Amphibian “S” is an integrally-suppressed variant of the Ruger Mk II Target .22 LR pistol.
It uses both standard and high velocity ammunition reliably and is finished in U.S. Navy spec stainless-matte finish. The pistol has an overall length of 13.25 in (33.7 cm), a suppressor length of 7 in (18 cm), a diameter of 1 in (2.5 cm) and weighs 41 oz (1,200 g)

.

I’d bet this is what was used and that’s why he still had a head after being shot!

The irony would be the biggest target was taken down with the smallest firearm the military uses.
Cost effective? $0.04 per round, 2 rounds total 8 cents!

If it helps Urkel’s chance of re-election, they won’t make a peep. These people, like Urkle support the destruction, without anesthetics of children in the womb, and in the case of partial birth abortion, the destruction of a nearly born child. They are perfectly happy with his votes to allow babies born alive after a botched abortion to be allowed to die of exposure while left on a shelf in a storage room.

If they can be that cold, the idea of their statist marxist messiah ordering the killing of someone when that will maybe get him re-elected isn’t worth a second thought.

I agree with the impossibility of hitting so precisely a moving target at any range, but if he freezes, just for a second, he can be hit wherever you want to place the round, if you have the skill level. I suspect that this was exactly the case. And, no, I don’t think he was held down and executed at close range, for even an eye entry in that case would decimate the face and head.

Pics, or it didn’t happen. Pic of a member of Congress talking about what happened don’t count.

However OBL took the lead, I insist that our government send the bill for the bullet to the bin Laden family.

5.56 NATO. Through the face.

amerpundit on May 11, 2011 at 9:09 PM

What Ameripundit means is that the 5.56 will enter the body and begin flipping end over end tearing tissue and flesh.

rbendana on May 11, 2011 at 11:34 PM

Isn’t it funny that in this case the liberals aren’t blaming the gun for the killing?

slickwillie2001 on May 11, 2011 at 11:42 PM

Oh, please don’t call him an old man! He was 3 months younger than I am and I am not even close to being old at 54.

Bob's Kid on May 11, 2011 at 11:43 PM

OBL became U-sama, when too many people started confusing Osama/Obama. I cant count how many reporters and talk radio hosts, were misuing Obama name the days after the raid.

anikol on May 12, 2011 at 1:00 AM

Bin Laden’s skull did seem to be intact but the bullet had exploded inside, forcing “the brain to come back out of the eye socket.”

Sounds GRREAAAAAAT!!! I guess that’s why he’s called Pop-Eye.

MaiDee on May 12, 2011 at 1:35 AM

forcing “the brain to come back out of the eye socket.”

and:

among the many other intel bits

Heh! :)

Shy Guy on May 12, 2011 at 2:08 AM

sorry, but why does inhofe get to see the pics but the families of 911 victims who had to watch their families die on tv don’t?

TheBlueSite on May 12, 2011 at 4:12 AM

Apparently the weapon used to kill Bin Laden was an HK 416, a version of the M4 carbine. The Military Times blog Gear Scout has it on good authority from several sources in the SF community. A 5.56mm round to the head would have caused some considerable damage.

As for Bin Laden’s plans, his desire for large casualties could have been his weakness- it must be considerably more difficult to plan and organise a massive terrorist attack, hence more opportunity for intelligence agencies to foil the plan. Imagine if he’d gone the other way and asked jihadists to carry out small “lone wolf” style attacks across the country- a suicide vest attack at a Starbucks in Nashville, a car bomb attack in Topeka, a jihadist with an AK-47 in Boise. One man, minimal gear, no network around him to betray his mission or location. It’s pretty scary to think what they could have been doing- especially with the border still sitting wide open. I hope the CIA arrange a meeting between Bin Laden’s successor and the SEALs very quickly.

The more I think about it, the more I think Jonah Goldberg was right- Obama should have sat on the news of Bin Laden’s death for as long as possible to allow the intel services to grab, kill, spy on as much of the Al Qaeda network as possible.

Jay Mac on May 12, 2011 at 4:28 AM

All politicians are liars.

They want to prove Osama is dead, show me the proof, otherwise, you’re a F’n liar.

Come on people, “TRUST BUT VERIFY”, or in this case, don’t trust but damn sure VERIFY!.

Go ahead, name one person whom you trust to tell you the truth, tell you that UBL is dead. Uh huh.

MadDogF on May 11, 2011 at 10:58 PM

I’m not much of a conspiracy theorist, however I always believed OBL died a long time ago from kidney and liver probs. If that is him watching TV, where is the dialysis machine? That being said there is literally a whole boat load of people who witnessed his “funeral.” Body double? I don’t believe any of the crap being fed to us by the media. I am sticking to what I believe.

tbear44 on May 12, 2011 at 4:52 AM

” . . . it was easier to identify him without all that messy stuff on his face.”

I’m surprised that Shep didn’t ask a follow-up. “Messy stuff. What exactly do you mean by messy stuff?” I assume Inhofe wasn’t talking bout eye make-up.

BigAlSouth on May 12, 2011 at 5:46 AM

OBL was able to keep involved because the Pakistani’s let him live in a compound 70 miles from their Capitol city. Now, if he had been living in a cave in Afghanistan or in a hut in the Tribal region of Pakistan…

Gohawgs on May 12, 2011 at 6:09 AM

Duly noted, Senator.

EVERYBODY wanted it that way AP. Now I suggest everybody quit griping over the details.

rbendana on May 11, 2011 at 11:34 PM

Normally, rifle bullets are sharply tapered to allow them to fly with less air resistance. A hollow point is a projectile which mushrooms as it flies through the air, thereby causing a larger, jagged entrance wound and more soft tissue damage.

What you are referring to is “tumbling” which occurs as the bullet slows down. As it expends it’s energy, it becomes less stable and begins to tumble end-over-end. You are correct that it makes a larger hole, and to an extent does more damage, but that is not an intended consequence. It is more desirable to strike the target straight on.

Mr. Grump on May 12, 2011 at 6:34 AM

I wrote a bit of this on NewsBusters.com yesterday, and didn’t get any response. The whole thing has too many inconsistencies for me. The disposal of the body(evidence)inside of 24 hours was the red flag to me. Hitler feared being captured and paraded through Moscow like a circus animal in a cage, thus pulling his own trigger. Bin Laden should have been captured, brought to Gitmo, waterboarded for intel, tried in a Martial Court, convicted of War Crimes and hung like his buddy Saddam. This was no capture or kill order, it was “go in and kill him, he knows something Obama doesn’t want out”. He is now being reported as being undressed and unarmed. There was a fire fight outside for 10 minutes and two choppers landed in the front yard. I’m pretty sure Bil Laden knew the jig was up and he was ready to surrender if he was still unarmed at that point. He was probably pretty sure the U.S. found him and knew there was no escape. Which of the five versions the White House released is the correct one?

I have no problem with our SEALS doing him, I have no problem with Osama getting his brains scrambled with a .223….But something about all this stinks to high heaven. I use the Hitler analogy not for incitement, but rather it’s a fairly good analogy of war criminals hunted down. There was a Capture/Kill order on Hitler, why not this assclown? I don’t think Truman or Churchill would have been doing cartwheels if the Russkies claimed to have done the same as what happened to Bin Ladin.

Maybe I’m pissin’ up a rope here, anyone looking to disarm my argument, have at it. Please do so logically and stay away from ad hominem attack. I’m looking for debate on this, not a Kos style slap down calling me a “Deather”…

adamsmith on May 12, 2011 at 6:58 AM

Inhofe was wanting the word ‘gore’ in his description of OBL’s head.

Anyway, OBL deserved a worse death than he got. All in all he got humane treatment.

If we were the Tallyban we would have hacked his lousy head off and taped it. Then maybe roasted his body and returned it to his family and forced them to eat it. Then killed his family.

Sherman1864 on May 12, 2011 at 7:45 AM

MadDogF on May 11, 2011 at 10:58 PM

I can see where you got your handle. You are truly a mad dog. Because of that there will be no reasoning with you. Inhofe is my and one of the best senators in Washington. I trust him to tell us the truth in all important things (not necessarily about his wife’s dress).

Dont let the putrid foam from your mouth spoil your shirt.

Old Country Boy on May 12, 2011 at 9:10 AM

Are people so weak this kind of stuff grosses them out? Oh, please. Hasn’t everyone seen a dead body by the time they get in their 20s?

di butler on May 11, 2011 at 10:32 PM

Actually, yes. I’ve seen dead bodies, and it still grosses me out.

Now, that said, if you want to see a dead bin Laden, I think the Government has an obligation to indulge you under the FOIA.

He tells his disciples that only a body count of thousands, something on the scale of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, would shift U.S. policy.

He never did understand Americans, did he?
