And the award for the most ridiculous poll sampling goes to …
posted at 9:30 am on May 11, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
Move over, CBS. Hang up the kid-leather gloves, WaPo/ABC. There’s a new sample-skewing sheriff in town, and it’s the Associated Press. In a new definition of “outlier,” the AP reported that its latest poll from GfK Roper shows Barack Obama with a 60% approval rating in a survey of 1001 adults, with even his approval on the economy shooting past the 50% mark:
President Barack Obama’s approval rating has hit its highest point in two years — 60 percent — and more than half of Americans now say he deserves to be re-elected, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll taken after U.S. forces killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.
In worrisome signs for Republicans, the president’s standing improved not just on foreign policy but also on the economy, and independent Americans — a key voting bloc in the November 2012 presidential election — caused the overall uptick in support by sliding back to Obama after fleeing for much of the past two years.
Comfortable majorities of the public now call Obama a strong leader who will keep America safe. Nearly three-fourths — 73 percent — also now say they are confident that Obama can effectively handle terrorist threats. And he improved his standing on Afghanistan, Iraq and the United States’ relationships with other countries.
Oddly — or perhaps not — the AP report doesn’t include a link back to the survey’s raw data. In order to find it, one has to go to GfK’s site for its AP polls. The partisan breakdown in the sample is found about halfway through the PDF, and it explains a great deal about how Obama managed to get such a high boost in this poll while others showed shallow bumps that had already started to subside.
The Dem/Rep/Ind breakdown in this poll is 46/29/4, as AP assigned most of the leaners to the parties. That is a 17-point gap, more than twice what was seen in the 2008 actual popular vote that elected Obama. It only gets worse when independents are assigned properly. When taking out the leaners, the split becomes — I’m not kidding — 35/18/27. Oh, and another 20% “don’t know.” That’s significantly worse than the March poll, in which the proper D/R/I was 29/20/34, and far beyond their post-midterm sample of 31/28/26. It’s pretty easy to get Obama to 60% when Republicans are undersampled by almost half.
Frankly, this sample is so bad that no real insights can be gleaned from it. I think it’s time to break out the Billy Madison verdict:

I guess they’re saving that for the next poll.

But how else are they going to get Tea Partiers to feel like their movement is overwhelmed?
Oddly enough, Kim Jong Il enjoys a similar level of support according to North Korea’s polls.

God I must be pretty ignorant. What is the purpose of a poll? I used to believe they were to inform people, who wanted to know, what the mood of the country was, at any given moment. The way these polling companies are purposely skewing the results, there has to be another reason to do polls.
Getting back to my ignorance, I used to believe that companies were concerned about their credibility, with a poll like this, it should be obvious, to the most casual observer, that is not the case.
So, would someone please enlighten me, what is the purpose of this particular poll, which no one but a blissfully ignorant, non-voting, independent would believe? If it’s to sway public opinion, it has as much chance of doing that as Obama’s speech yesterday has of starting a bi-partisan approach to immigration reform.

I can’t say that I saw them today. But on other occasions, they never–and I mean never–look at the underlying sampling. Every poll they feature–almost always those lauding Obama–is taken as an article of faith. Not one of them ever asks whether those polled are likely voters, registered voters, or adults (presumably, adults are preferable because likely voters are racist), and not one of them ever asks about the partisan split. I can only conclude that they cannot think beyond the initial level of regurgitating information off teleprompters.

Is it any wonder, then, that the left is so desperate to shut down any conservative websites, talk radio, and publications. We’d never find out what’s really behind a joke poll such as this. AP is being unmasked more and more for the liberal slanting hacks that they are. So it is a good for a laugh instead of the depressing news it would have been a few years back with only the MSM reporting this crap. The sad thing is, it’s only going to get worse. It’s already evident by the pathetic attempts of the media to give Obamasama credit for the wonderful job the Navy Seals did in taking out Osama BL when we all know he fought every program and intelligence tactic used for this. And he’s still doing it through the idiot Attorney General. We have to keep pushing back hard to undo the years of MSM propaganda.

Rush Limbaugh has perhaps the best explanation of what the purpose of a “poll” is. Of course, Google is hiding it from me, but I’m sure El Rushbo must have it online at his site someplace.
Basically, a “poll” these days is done for one reason-to Shape Public Opinion.
Del Dolemonte on May 11, 2011 at 10:13 AM
Why even pretend anymore…they should just do a 100/0/0 sampling…
PatriotRider on May 11, 2011 at 10:18 AM
It is polls like these that are the EXACT reason why I won’t subscribe to a newspaper anymore. More than 50% of most papers get their news from the AP. Check yours, all the articles have an AP byline.
- In my area, the Fort Myers News-Press and Naples News are both saturated with AP’s bulls**t reporting. Why on earth would I pay for that?
- If I want the store flyers in the Sunday paper, I’ll take them from my favorite breakfast place.

Kataklysmic on May 11, 2011 at 10:19 AM
Standard practice.
Liberals, and this Administration in particular, develop “facts” to bolster the narrative.
And, as Ed points out, the “immigrants” involved in this narrative all arrived on our shores legally…and did not have to swim across that alligator-infested moat in the dark of night to get here.
What is it about legal immigration, a legally defined process, and illegal peregrination that is sooo difficult to understand? And why are we the only Nation the liberals demand have no border controls whatsoever?

They have to allude, decieve, lie, and skew to prop up their ummm candidate. He has nothing left, he’s an empty suit, and now they have to prop him up using any means possible. Their savior is a failure, and they know it!!!
capejasmine on May 11, 2011 at 10:34 AM
I wouldn’t say that. It does give us some insight into how desperate the MSM is to get Obama re-elected, and how blatantly they will distort facts in their own “reporting” in order to achieve that objective.

No poll is valid if the data and samplings are not released for review….That makes most pollsters invalid
Now for a real Hitler reference. The GfK was founded shortly after Adolph came into power as part of his propaganda arm. They were essential in keeping the Nazi’s illusion of approval high, and thusly discouraging the citizeenry from revolting or even offering their disapproval amongst themselves..

I have found that most “pollsters” do release their methodology and sampling info with their “polls”-you just have to patiently find it. Int he case of the C-BS/NYT, it’s usually buried at the bottom of the final page of the pdf.
The one major outlet that I have never seen release their methodology? CNN. But of course, they have been an utter joke for years, and only

Herb on May 11, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Rasmassen is back to normal… or near normal. 48 approve, 52 disapprove. Bubble receding.
AP is probably just trying to get the average to last a little longer with this one.
I can’t believe RCP would average it. It is truly silly.
What good can it possibly do long term? Other than give them false hope.
petunia on May 11, 2011 at 11:47 AM
When you take off the 9 percent the AP’s thumb pressed onto the scale, Obama’s rating turns out to be 52 percent, which is not that far out of line with every other poll I’ve seen. So in 4 to 8 weeks his rating will be back to normal. Yes, getting OBL was a big plus for Obama but the only long term advantage to him will be that it is more difficult to make the case that his default position on any controversy is simply to dither until the subject is changed. His main problem however will remain the economy. That will generate bad news ever day, day after day, for the next 18 months. And that will decide the election. So, if the economy improves significantly, what with the MSM’s thumb on the scale, as we have seen, then yes Obama has a good chance of being re-elected.
