Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on May 10, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

The Most Transparent Administration Evah recently showed its commitment to complete openness by, er, threatening to ban Hearst reporter from the White House reporter pool for the egregious crime of using a Flip camera.  Carla Marinucci happened to tape part of a protest last month at an Obama fundraiser where a group stood up and sang “Where’s Our Change?”

For this sin, Marinucci got threatened with banishment from the pool, where reporters are apparently only allowed technology that could be found as late as 1940 for their work. But that isn’t really the OOTD, as petty as that is.  When the San Francisco Chronicle reported on the “Carla fatwa,” the White House first threatened to ban all Hearst reporters from access, and then tried denying that it had threatened Hearst at all.  Both Phil Bronstein and Ward Bushee at the Chronicle called shenanigans:

In a pants-on-fire moment, the White House press office today denied anyone there had issued threats to remove Carla Marinucci and possibly other Hearst reporters from the press pool covering the President in the Bay Area.

Chronicle editor Ward Bushee called the press office on its fib:

Sadly, we expected the White House to respond in this manner based on our experiences yesterday. It is not a truthful response. It follows a day of off-the-record exchanges with key people in the White House communications office who told us they would remove our reporter, then threatened retaliation to Chronicle and Hearst reporters if we reported on the ban, and then recanted to say our reporter might not be removed after all.

The Chronicle’s report is accurate.

If the White House has indeed decided not to ban our reporter, we would like an on-the-record notice that she will remain the San Francisco print pool reporter.

I was on some of those calls and can confirm Ward’s statement.

Messy ball now firmly in White House court.

All this just to keep reporters from recording what happens at fundraisers?  At least they didn’t try tossing Marinucci into a closet.  Do they frisk donors at these events to keep cell phones and Flip cameras out, too?  Why is the Most Transparent Administration Evah afraid of reporters looking for accurate quotes while on the record?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. and unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

To be fair, the full PBHO quote from 2008 is “My administration will be as transparent as a foot-thick sheet of lead.”

The WH tried to make another gutsy call but the regime always seems to retreat when confronted openly. Catch them enough, get it into the open and watch the sparks fly.

This is a frightening one. This Gestapo/Pravda bullying by the White House needs to stop.

Not too bad on the singing. Kinda catchy.
The only change seen in the last two point five years is from the voters opening their eyes.

Why is the Most Transparent Administration Evah afraid of reporters looking for accurate quotes while on the record?

When accurate quotes leak from Duh Won’s fundraisers (especially in SF) nasty remarks about the rest of the country emerge….. like ‘bitter clingers.’

Why is the Most Transparent Administration Evah afraid of reporters looking for accurate quotes while on the record?

Because the truth will out, but somehow they think they can stop it like little Hans on the dike.

Hooray for transparency Welcome to the USSA, Komrades.

kingsjester on May 10, 2011 at 8:18 AM

lol, the Obama Administration is the oppressive power that the media was checking every dark corner for from 2000-2008.

I guess they’re not looking anymore.

Can you imagine the bloody murder if the Bush Administration tried to get away with a fraction of what these clowns are trying, every day?

hawkdriver on May 10, 2011 at 8:22 AM

I have to say, Obama was very Gutsy taking down the Yemeni passenger who attempted to get into the cockpit on the plane to San Fransisco the other day.

When can we see the photos of Obama taking him down?

WoosterOh on May 10, 2011 at 8:23 AM

I can’t understand the Meth patient paranoia. They have the press on all fours as it is….it’s weird stuff like this that’s gonna get these dummies really bad press at the end of the day.

its infuriating that they get away with this so called journalism…the double standard displayed everyday…and the sheeple take it all in- hook, line, and sinker

cmsinaz on May 10, 2011 at 8:25 AM

Why is the Most Transparent Administration Evah afraid of reporters looking for accurate quotes while on the record?

Because of stuff like this, that’s why. They know that they can’t survive if the rank and file see them as they actually are. Fortunately for us their heavy handed methods only serve to irritate the very people they’re dependent upon for keeping their true faces hidden.

Oldnuke on May 10, 2011 at 8:31 AM

All this just to keep reporters from recording what happens at fundraisers? At least they didn’t try tossing Marinucci into a closet.

And at least they didn’t confiscate her video and keep it in a locked vault as the LOS ANGELES TIMES HAS DONE WITH THE RASHID KHALIDI VIDEOS!

Do they frisk donors at these events to keep cell phones and Flip cameras out, too? Why is the Most Transparent Administration Evah afraid of reporters looking for accurate quotes while on the record?

Because they don’t want any more truth to leak out. It’s already hard enough to be a Marxist between his wife and a tamale….

Friend at work keyed in on a similar comment a while back about me comparing the media coverage of Bush and Obama. He made the general statement that it’s not worth getting bent out of shape pointing it out all of the time and that we should just learn to work around it.

I say no. A free press is the only thing that separates us from tin horn dictators. It needs to be a constant battle of calling them on their one-sided view of the world. We also need to get more young Conservatives interested in journalism.

hawkdriver on May 10, 2011 at 8:36 AM

Our press is only free and independent enough to prostrate themselves like a bunch of b!tches before this administration.

ted c on May 10, 2011 at 8:37 AM

Maybe the President should try doing his job instead of fundraising. Then this wouldn’t be a problem. He is currently President of all Americans, not just the ones who line his pockets, although you wouldn’t know that based on his actions.

ctmom on May 10, 2011 at 8:39 AM

It is refreshing to see some in the MSM are finally opening their eyes and seeing through the smoke and mirrors what this administration is really all about.

Now all we would need would be for a mass awakening to take place……..minus MSNBC, of course.

Those lunatics still suffer from the delusion that not only does the B.O. Administration’s sh*t not stink, but if they could, they would have it embossed in bronze and proudly displayed on their mantlepieces!

pilamaye on May 10, 2011 at 8:39 AM

I seriously hope at least one news outlet (or somebody) is compiling all of these “fun facts” chronologically from the beginning of this fiasco we loosely term a “Presidency”. From the jetliner buzzing New Yorks’ skyline to pizza deliveries from Chicago to all the C-span health care debates….etc etc etc..

If Republicans had any freaking brains and testi*les they’d use the thousands of examples in campaign ads to illustrate just what a disaster this administration is instead of worrying about things like Donald Trump.

“Guys, we’re talking about housing right now.”

- President Barack H. Obama, April 2009

That there wasn’t laughter and a full week of print and broadcast ridicule for that statement was when the press let him know he would be allowed to do these things.

I would bet, friendly reminders are sent out all the time to remind folks when their bylines aren’t “supportive”. A lot of his minions, I would also bet, never say a word and just take one for their team.

Campaign event…. I wonder if the taxpayer footed the bill for Ø to get all the way out to San Fran on AF-1 and if we can get our money back in a reasonable time to make a dent in the deficit.
.
He wasn’t out there on taxpayer business, he was out there on Ø business, namely re-election campaigning. It’s not like he was issuing authoritarian, Congress-avoiding executive orders or anything despotic like that. It’s amazing what a big smile and a belief in your own moral superiority will get one these days.

Ed’s getting back up to speed and the White House is just going to pretend this didn’t happen and hope it goes away (with the warning message received by the press). It needs more sunlight and fresh air. Actually, this needs more exposure, too.

That’s a gutsy call, standing up to a journalist and telling them not to record an event…gutsy I am tellin ya!

tinkerthinker on May 10, 2011 at 8:43 AM

See, the problem with your post is the word “buckled”, most just roll over, many sit and stay, others beg…the liberal journalist lap dog.
For this to be a story, you can be sure it was really big, a really big issue, and one that has festered for a long time…but it doesn’t matter, as if the Chronicle is going to not support him?

right2bright on May 10, 2011 at 9:06 AM

Reminds me when Chris Wallace (who btw looks like he got himself a Lifestyle Lift and looks much better) called them the “biggest bunch of cry-babies in my 30 years covering Washington”…and their incessant battle with FOX News. To be so obsessively preoccupied with one’s image and portrayal in the media tells you that A) they’re up to no friggin’ good or B) that they’re in over their heads, they know it, but their persistent egos and arrogance will see to it that the reality stops from getting out to the masses at all costs.

I’m for calling them out at every turn, hawk, but I’ve yet to see evidence that the efforts thus far have done any good but embolden them.

RepubChica on May 10, 2011 at 9:15 AM

The MSM have been whores for Barry since Day One. They just don’t like being reminded by the White House that they are whores.

GarandFan on May 10, 2011 at 10:23 AM

Be careful, Obama. The MSM is dutifully “serving” you, but if you keep standing on their fingers they may decide to bite.

And you better put away those fancy “pencil” thingies too.

In fact Jug-Ears will appoint a Print-Media Czar who will write your stories for you. Not that you’d notice much of a difference with the SF Chron.
