Obama on immigration: These wingnuts want a border moat

posted at 4:59 pm on May 10, 2011 by Allahpundit

Here’s the complete transcript in case you’re moved to read it, although I don’t know why you would be. You’ve heard this speech a hundred times before, and not just from Obama. Enforcement is better than it’s ever been, we have too many people “living in the shadows,” etc etc, so it’s time we got serious about amnesty. Even so, this is good politics for him insofar as there’s a lot of upside and little downside. No one expects it to go anywhere in Congress, and even if it did he’d have bipartisan cover, so the risk of alienating voters who think the solution to high unemployment might not be a sudden glut of legal labor is small. (In fact, so horrible has the economy been that America’s illegal population actually dropped by the largest amount in 30 years in 2009 and is presumably dropping still. Enforcement, Hopenchange-style.) Meanwhile, he gets to reassure Latinos that he’s serious enough about this issue to put his face to it in a major speech, even if he’s not quite serious enough to do anything about it via an executive order. So it’s a consummately political speech, and as with all O speeches, it ends ironically with a plea to … put politics aside:

So, the question is whether those in Congress who previously walked away in the name of enforcement are now ready to come back to the table and finish the work we’ve started. We have to put the politics aside. And if we do, I’m confident we can find common ground. Washington is behind the country on this. Already, there is a growing coalition of leaders across America who don’t always see eye-to-eye, but who are coming together on this issue. They see the harmful consequences of this broken system for their businesses and communities. They understand why we need to act.

He also assured the audience that the border fence is now “basically complete,” which is news to Jim DeMint and news to anyone else who remembers the “virtual fence” being touted as a deus ex machina in policing the border. The feds finally abandoned that idea just four months ago because — surprise — it wasn’t working. But maybe that’s a good thing. If we slide back into a recession, we might start seeing Americans try to sneak over into Mexico. As long as Cancun has high-speed Internet, I’m set. Click the image to watch.

And I want alligators in that moat, Mr. President.

We don’t need a moat – we have plenty of land mines left over from the Korean War.

Millions of votes just waiting for a give away. Obama and the Democratic party is all about giving away what belongs to others in order to gain power.

Why does “immigration reform” always have to mean amnesty?

Why can’t it mean stopping people from jumping the fence?

Politician shoveling horse manure. Nothing new here.

Tacitus on May 10, 2011 at 5:02 PM

He also assured the audience that the border fence is now “basically complete,”

And he also all but implied that the border is safer than it’s ever been. Try telling that to people who’ve been affected by the drug war with the cartels.

You wonder if he really believes this crap. If so, then imagine how swell he thinks the economy is doing.

Doughboy on May 10, 2011 at 5:02 PM

Anytime this guy gives a speech I always feel the rationality of it is somewhere along the lines of a person discussing the evils of violence while they punch me in the face.

I think though Obama’s Messiah glow is wearing off for the left. They dont have Amnesty, Free Cars and homes and jobs.

Obama is becoming more and more of a politican to them and less of a messiah. Even Farakhan and Rev Wright say Obama has sold out.

Obama’s hope lies in demonizing the right. And that is coming in for a major attempt soon. Then when countered he will allow the press to scream “Racism !”.

Obama is far weaker than he seems right now. But if we nominate someone who wont face him down (like McCain did in 2008) then he will win.

William Amos on May 10, 2011 at 5:03 PM

He knows it has absolutely no chance of passing. None. Zip. Zilch.

Even if you lost a few squish RINOs, you’d have to overcome Ben Nelson, Mark Pryor, Jay Rockefeller, Joe Manchin, and others. And that’s just in the Senate.

This is about lying to Hispanics — again — by promising that their vote will result in amnesty this time. Really. They mean it. This is totally unlike the other 9 million times they were promised only for Democrats to lie.

You know, this is a speech like Bush would have wanted to give if he wasn’t worried about pissing off his own base too much.

Mark1971 on May 10, 2011 at 5:14 PM

FoxNews is discussing this right now (Glenn Beck is in Israel, so he is not on this week). The sheriff of Penal County is on and is very p*ssed that Obama lied his butt off today. He said there is no safety, twice as many illegals make it through, as those that get stopped. There are signs in his county by the feds saying it is not safe to be in those areas due to illegal aliens and smuggling. He said the government is suing Arizona instead of solving the problem.

Now Cain is on the show. He said we have 4 problems
1) secure the border, with technology and GUNS,
2) enforce the laws that are already on the books. Don’t ignore the definition of illegal otherwise we will be lawless like Mexico. The people are so brazen, they are taking their lawlessness across the border to us
3) make it easier for employers to hire those here LEGALLY and we know they are here legally
4) promote the path to citizenship that is already on the books. Empower the states to do what the federal government is not doing and will not do.

He said Obama’s remarks show he is out of touch and no intention of getting serious about making it a priority to empower the states.

I would also add to this: deny all federal aid to sanctuary cities and sanctuary states.

Cain is really pissed the feds sued arizona.

Cain said Obama is doing this to distract the public about Obama’s failures to address the economy.

Cain used Sarah’s phrase – common sense solutions.

well, he can’t hide from his record anymore. 2012 will make 2010 seem like a small breeze.

joeindc44 on May 10, 2011 at 5:16 PM

In fact, so horrible has the economy been that America’s illegal population actually dropped by the largest amount in 30 years in 2009 and is presumably dropping still.

the only way to completely stop the northerly flow of illegals is for Mexico to continue exporting abject poverty and for us to continue to accept it. Once we achieve a balance and we look exactly like Mexico, then it’ll all stop. It’s slowing.

ted c on May 10, 2011 at 5:16 PM

This “partisan-in-chief” is so blatant that Republicans running for any office in 2012 would win if they could tie their opponent to this braying a$$hole.

Vince on May 10, 2011 at 5:18 PM

If illegals voted for Republicans…

… there would be a three layer, fifty foot electrified fence with barbwire, land mines, and sniper towers pointed south patrolled by an entire Command of Navy SEALs.

stvnscott on May 10, 2011 at 5:19 PM

he said 2 things that were blatantly false.
1. The fence is not built, however, a moat with hippos and pirahnas would not be bad
2. he mentioned that the founders of Intel were immigrants. I didn’t know that Iowa and California were foreign countries

ConservativePartyNow on May 10, 2011 at 5:20 PM

So, if the Won gave them all citizenship, there wouldn’t be enough of them left here to actually vote for him for any other dem. Ummm, then by 11-12 they should all be gone. The illegals have been here working in the fields across the country since the 60s. They have contributed to the economy and kept food prices low. That does not qualify them for US citizenship. They got paid for doing the job, could come and go and didn’t pay taxes.

Alas, we can’t vote Obama & Co. out of office until 2012.

But we can take the fight against ILLEGAL immigration to the ballot box at the local, and perhaps the state level, in 2011.

The sanctuary city of San Francisco is scheduled to elect a new Mayor, District Attorney and Sheriff to 4 year terms in November 2011.

Each of these local offices could have a big impact on the ability to enforce our immigration laws in the city.

Yet I don’t see any candidates on the horizon yet who have convinced me that they will work to stop ILLEGAL immigration in San Francisco.

The petition gathering period to get on the San Francisco ballot begins on June 3.

And with the silly Ranked Choice Voting method that San Francisco will use for this election, unexpected victories are very possible. If you know anybody who is qualified and willing to run for these offices send them to San Francisco’s Department of Elections ASAP.

What local elections are happening in your districts that could help to end ILLEGAL immigration in your local communities?

What are the deadlines for finding conservative candidates for these elections?

Ending ILLEGAL immigration needs to be a big campaign issue in local elections around the country in 2011!
