Obama at fundraiser: Killing Bin Laden should inspire us to finish what we started — by reelecting me

posted at 10:02 pm on May 10, 2011 by Allahpundit

He didn’t bring up Bin Laden himself — an audience member did — but we’re going to be hearing about OBL on the trail from now until election day so we might as well get used to it. And honestly, I don’t begrudge him that. Notwithstanding the fact that any Republican president, McCain included, would have also ordered the raid (Bush twice sent commandos into Pakistan after jihadis), the fact remains that it’s a major feather in his cap and he needs to display those feathers to get reelected. Granted, the left would throw a screaming fit if a Republican president did the same thing, but that’s just how they roll. Most of them are ridiculous frauds whose standards of behavior turn entirely on the party identification of the president. If there’s any single lesson to be gleaned from the first two-plus years of O’s presidency vis-a-vis counterterrorism, it’s that.

Besides, this sort of thing is self-regulating. If he goes too far in spiking the ball over Bin Laden, using his corpse as a de facto campaign prop, it’ll alienate the public and his polls will drop. Remember, almost two-thirds agree with the decision not to show the death photos. People don’t want this being used as a trophy. If he starts treating it too much as a naked applause line, he’s risking a backlash. Click the image to watch.

He won’t release the photo for this reason – it will show a very old, frail, man, who wanted to surrender and was shot in front of women/children into smithereenes.

However, the photo will be leaked, soon.

With Zero’s hawkish stances and signing an extension of the Bush tax cuts, I’m almost wondering if the left would accept a de factor Republican President on foreign policy and to a great extent economics, as long as the guy/gal was socially liberal. I’ve not read all the commentary or comments about Bin Laden’s demise but one thing is for certain – the decision to go into Pakistan last week was the farthest thing from a “gutsy call” as one can get.

He does indeed have a point about Mr. bin Laden. There isn’t the thickness of a sheet of paper’s worth of difference between his acts and those of any Republican who might have held office when this happened — except that said Republican would probably have kept quiet about whatever happened around bin Laden until we harvested that so-called intelligence bonanza, and said Republican probably would not have spared the cruise missiles necessary to assure that what happened in Abbottabad stayed in Abbottabad.

And the healthcare — his Republican opponent would have passed the same healthcare bill, right? Heh.

In Obama’s case, he’s been exposed as a poor of a resident of the White House as ever. No need for the Navy Seals to extricate him from power, though. Just vote the bugger out of office in 2012.

http://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2011/05/10/msnbc-airs-highly-edited-video-bushs-march-2002-comments-concerning-b

This is the Bush soundbite about him “not worrying about” bin Laden.

But as this cite from May of 2006 proves, a single quote or two ain’t enough.

U.S. Central Command Gen. John Abizaid paid a visit to Islamabad Wednesday to press President Pervez Musharraf for more results in the war on terror. (Musharraf has banned U.S. troops stationed over the border in Afghanistan from joining the hunt for bin Laden, or even counterattacking al-Qaida and Taleb marauders.)

Meantime, the State Department sent its top counterterrorism official to meet with Musharraf’s interior ministers.

Those trips come on the heels of one by George W. Bush himself. The president indicated he was developing doubts about Musharraf’s commitment and needed to travel to Islamabad and check his temperature and remind him of the need to capture bin Laden.

“Part of my mission,” Bush said in March, “was to determine whether or not the president is as committed as he has been in the past in bringing these terrorists to justice.” Bush came away satisfied. But this week’s high-level follow-ups show lingering doubts.

Self-aware much? How do conservatives square this characterization of liberals with how you guys were completely silent as Bush ran the debt sky-high and the economy into the ground, and now demand we cut spending during a recession to reduce the debt? The half of you who still supported Bush after a wholly disastrous presidency surely disapprove of every action Obama’s taken. You give Bush credit for Obama capturing OBL, but then you blame Obama for the bad economy that Bush left him with. Cognitive dissonance * hypocrisy to the nth power.

underceij on May 11, 2011 at 10:29 AM

Underceij,

The economy collapsed because a housing bubble promulgated by Democratic policies collapsed. Bush repeatedly warned Congress that Fannie/Freddie were out of control, but Congress refused to cede him the power to regulate.

When Government enters a market, bad things happen. The housing bubble was a foreordained conclusion to what happens which you feed the direct power of the Treasury into a marketplace — the free and easy money caused housing prices to rise to the point where our children (well, my children at least) could not afford to purchase the home I had purchased thirty years earlier. The bubble was doomed, but the Democratic ideal of easy home ownership — the NINJA (no income, jobs, or assets) loan, came to be the order of the day.

Now a good dose of reality has set in, and what do the Democrats do? Feed the beast, that’s what!

I give Bush no credit for having caved to the Democrats on Stimulus. He threw over his free market upbringing for no good end. That said, this is a Democratic beast, not a Republican one.

This is my 1000 words on the matter.
